    Wednesday 19th June
Decided to rest as hamstring and glute was still a little sore. It wasn't too bad but thought that a days rest would be no harm at this stage.

    Thursday 20th June
Hamstring didn't feel too bad to day but flippin back had been killing me all day. Couldn't get comfortable all day at work. Had planned to run home after work but was a bit wary about whether my back would hold up or not. Did it in the end and my back was ok while running. hamstring was a bit niggly but actually it helped slow me down as I was watching it carefully.

Got appointment for Cardiologist yesterday for end July. Have to go for tests beforehand including an ECG stress test which includes running on a treadmill, so that should be interesting!

Is that a routine check with the cardiologist? Looking back through a couple of pages and I can't see any complaints. Hope all is ok.

Not routine no. A couple of months back I underwent a full health check and the ECG showed an anomaly which suggested that I should get it checked out. The initial diagnosis is something called "First degree heart block" Apparently not uncommon amongst "elite" athletes;)

I went to the GP afterwards and said to him ok what's the story here? Should I be worried? Should I get it checked out further?

He said I shouldn't be too concerned as i don't show any other symptoms like bad chest pain etc so to keep on doing what I'm doing and he would refer me for further tests just as a precaution.

I'm more concerned about my back at the moment to be honest. Very sore today.Might need to take a few days off running.

    Good luck at the cardiologist.

I was wondering, are you sure the hamstring pain is your hamstring? I know you've had back problems over the years, so they could be connected. What I thought was glute / hamstring pain was actually coming from my lower back.

I'm sure you'd had it checked out, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Hi Helen. You are absolutely right. It is all linked. Nobody so far can fix me though. Advice is just to stretch and work on core to strwngthen lower back. I probably need to do more of that than I am at moment. Lots of ibuprofen and voltarol in meantime!

    Friday 21st June

Ran into work. Back bothering me a little so not sure how this was going to go.Brought my bus/train ticket with me just in case!

At least it ensured I slowed it down and kept it very easy. By the last mile I was able to up it to tempo pace so felt good.

It was only after I had my shower and was trying to tie my shoelaces that I thought maybe it wasnt such a good idea to run into work.Couldn't bend down far enough to do it.Almost had to ask someone else to tie my laces but managed to do it in the end.

Was bothering me all day so got some voltarol and some nurofen at lunchtime. Felt better after a walk at lunchtime too.My work chair gave me some relief but not much.

Might take a rest for a few days .Will see how it is tomorrow.

    Saturday 22nd June
    No running

    Sunday 23rd June
    No running

    Monday 24th June
Had the day off work today so had a good lie-in and the back seems to be slowly improving after resting up the last couple of days and of course the difene has helped too.

It was killing me though that my mileage was staying static and my back seemed to feel better when I got up and was moving around and gets worse when I'm sitting down doing nothing. So it was the arrival of my Race Series 5 mile number in the post later this morning that prompted me to get up and out for a gently recovery style run. Rather than than sitting at home piling on calories.

So I drove up to St Annes park in Raheny for a gently 3 miles or so at recovery pace to see how the back held out. It was a lovely morning for it and took it very handy over grass, park trail and tarmac surfaces. No problems at all during the run with my back and doesn't feel any worse now.

Was thinking about it but then I checked with my marathon coach (Meno) ;-) and he said no so will take his advice. Club will be marshalling though so may help out instead.

    Wednesday 26th June

Rest -OH was going out. Brought my gear into work for potential lunchtime run but too many meetings put an end to that idea.

    Thursday 27th June

Was supposed to be working late so brought the gear in again in hope that I'd get a lunchtime run in. Late work was cancelled but got the run in all the same at lunchtime. Opted to up the pace a bit and do a tempo style run. Turned into a kind of a progression run with an easy mile at the end of it:confused:

Good workout for me though.Enjoyed the run. Dame Street to Pearse St to Ringsend park, couple of laps there and than back to Dame st via East Link, North Wall Quay, Townsend , Street, College Green. Drizzly rain but warm and brezy , especially on way back.

Irish Runner 5 Mile Saturday 29th June

PB going into this race was 37:09. I knew this was beatable bbut just not sure by how much particularly on this course because of the hills in the second half of the race. I had a rough plan in my head to do 7:15min/mi and try to maintain that for the race and that would give me a decent PB.

Met a good few people from the club beforehand and it was great to see so many wearing the club colours. There was a good contingent there from the club. Also saw RunningKing there in the pen which was a bit of a surprise. Thought you'd be jetlagged from your trip to Singapore? I guess you just couldn't resist a race when it is just on your doorstop. Sorry I didn't get a chance to chat.

Anyway the race started and got off with a good pelt, felt a bit fast but I was just trying to find some space and find a rhythm when after about 200m, felt a sharp pain in left hamstring. Oh Oh...pkease don't go on me now I thought. I had gotten a decent warmup in and some stretching so this caught me by surprise. Felt like a needle sticking into hamstring and pain was at top of hamstring going into glute. had to check my stride and was very worried about it for next half mile thinking my race could be up before I even got to first mile marker.

I was definitely going too fast at the start. Sure I could still see the back of RunningKing's head in the distance so that was a sure sign.

    Mile 1: 6:32 ( WTF was I thinking?! )

Ok some sense now please I was telling myself. pain in hamstring had subsided by now so held back a bit knowing we still had the hills to negotiate in second half of race. Got to roundbout back on Chesterfield and was settling into a rhythm now but still probably a bit too fast. Got a great shout out from HelenAnne here and some others from club. Thanks Helen!:)

    Mile 2: 6:55

Still too fast but hills were about to put an end to that soon. Just tried to keep it in around 7:30 if i could on this section but the hills were just sapping the energy out of me. By mile 3 I was hating every minute of this race and just wanted it over. My head just wasn't in the game anymore.

    Miles 3 and 4: 7:22,7:42

You can see the trend here now at this stage, getting slower with each mile. My own fault for not pacing this one right. Right now I was just trying to hold on and maybe there was a chance of a small PB. The sign for 400m to go was awelcome sight and manage a burst to take me to the line and over in 36:30 by my garmin.(official chip time 36:33)

Had a good oul wretch (Just for you Ososlo ;))after finishing just before collecting my t-shirt, which I really like.

So mixed bag here for me today. Not happy with the way I raced this. lesson learned...stick to the effin plan the next time! Should have kept to even 7:15s and the time would have been better. I know I can do better than this. On plus side it is a new PB and my times are coming down at all distances so I must be doing something right. Marathon is the goal race this year so trying to remember that the "main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing":)( King,Running (2013)It's About Time, Internet:Boards)

Sounds like a tough one RR, it's sooo easy to head out too fast especially in a short race. It's all good practise though and better make the mistakes now rather than in the goal race. And most importantly as RK said, a PB is a PB so well done!

Well run today! You were looking great when I saw you at the monument, and you were definitely hanging in well at the end!

    Congratulations on the PB.

I need to do some upper body work, I think as my arms were KILLING me after clapping Raheny people on for 40 minutes! (Seriously!)

Are you running tomorrow morning? I'm going to try to hobble a few miles :)
