Dealing with Ryan air always feels too adversial really. I mean you just want to go from a to b in as stress free manner as possible. With them from the moment you book till you get off the plane it just feels like you got to be on high alert the whole time...

I mean its great what they've done and the part they've played in making travel more affordable but it just seems that to me they're going to hit a tipping point where the amount of people they lose as customers is going to overtake what they gain with extra charges etc. I think that if they could take the pain out of dealing with them they'd get a lot of the casual flyier market back. The whole abrasive approach just feels a little done now...

Fuel prices are going through the roof, this is a response I would imagine

Hahahaha. So true. Did I print off the boarding card right? How heavy is my bag? How wide is my bag - will it fit in the measuring thing? Will I be able to get it out again while being watched by Ryanair staff?

I always find I get into the plane and once I sit down I can finally breathe again. I think, 'got this flight for €50 return to London. Fcuk you, Ryanair!'

50 Euro return? I was never guilty of paying that much.

I never understood how they used to sell the seats for 10 euro each way including taxes when the air tax was 10 euro each way by itself. I felt so guilty that they were losing money on me that I actually one time bought a packet of their smokeless cigarettes.

Have not flown with Ryanair for around 6 years and after that it won't be any-time soon.

Bye bye Mr O'Leary, I would rather give the money to Aer Lingus for the comfort.

How are Aer lingus more comfortable?

€30 I could just about stomach, €50 is really pushing it and I think I'd be considering using someone else.

Aer Lingus have a 32" seat pitch, Ryanair have 30"... :pac:

I think the answer to this is pretty simple, just compare airlines that fly where you want to go, if you're not taking bags, Ryanair might be cheaper, if you are taking bags, then this will probably tip the balance. All it takes it 10 minutes to compare, figure if you'll need to take bags or not, work that into the pricing and see which one is best suited to you.

Then of course there's things like timings of flights and if Aer Lingus or BA is in question then there's the loyalty schemes to also keep in mind. It's not complicated though, just takes a little effort on the consumers part.

Leg room, staff are generally more pleasant, they don't **** you over if your bag is slightly over the weight or slightly over the size. They give you a pre-assigned seat so its not like a cattlemart .

I don't worry about any of this because I have the correctly sized bag, and printing pieces of paper is easy. (Pro tip you can print as many copies of the boarding ticket as you want).

I used to travel to Bristol a lot - say 20 times a year and only took Aer Lingus if Ryanair were booked. AL had a worse plane, a slower journey, slower loading times and was - according to reports - less reliable.

Ryanair has the best fleet. More likely to fly in fog and snow. Get the right sized bag and get on.

I am sure Aer Lingus are better on other routes though.

    What? It's completely stress free.

    Whenever before trip: Book flight
    Day before: Check in
    Flight: Get on plane

    Done

I wouldn't have a problem with this if they allowed American style carry on's. Increasing the hand luggage allowance is useless as long as we are confined to 60cm x 40cm x 20cm. You'd have to fill the thing with stones to use 10Kg

With all the space they are going to have in the hold they could easily implement a check at the gate system like they have in the states with a bigger bag. Unless their next plan is to come up with extra galley slave class seats in the hold.

Both Aer Lingus and Ryanair planes are equally capable, infact all Aer Lingus planes are equipped to land in fog where as only 80% of Ryanair's are. (It's not as important to Ryanair due to their fleet size, they can send equipped aircraft to foggy places, Aer Lingus has most planes in Dublin, so if Dublin is foggy, all need to be able to land in fog.)

Neither airline can land in snow, that's the law.

You're probably confusing Aer Lingus with Aer Arann, who operate Aer Lingus's regional flights as Aer Lingus Regional.

Personally I think €50 per bag, each way, is just to much, and tbh would definetly turn me off flying with them! As it is, if there is an alternative, even a bit more expensive, ill go with them!
I used to work for Ryanair before as a mechanic and used to fly over and back to Germany every week, unlimited baggage weight on a staff ticket, I made sure to get value for it while I could!!! :D

Could it be more of a case of RIP cheap travel ? Prices seem to be going up a fair whack across the board.

I have rarely found cheaper flights to London, which is where I usually fly.

im flying in there for €50 return next weekend, which is unreal value. and ive got it, much cheaper in the past also.

Ryanair to London, is always excellent value from Dublin, as they are for most routes.

With the charge for golf clubs at €50 each way, I finally decided to hire a set of clubs in Portugal earlier this year and they cost me €55 for the whole week, collected at Faro airport and left there on return. Up to €40 each way for bringing my own clunb, I grumbled and paid up but not any more.

If I was forced to pay Ryanair €100 for carrying clubs, I'd just not bother with golf in Spain or Portugal. Not worth the money- and I'll probably not bother with golfing trips in Spain/Algarve any more.

There is a tipping point with these baggage/golfclubs charges and some people may start to have second thoughts about discretionary flying if it becomes much more inconvenient and costly.

Booked flights with them earlier this week - the bag cost more than the flight!! Flight was €25.99, bag was €35. This is insane though, but they'll probably get away with it and be more profitable than ever. I generally try to only bring hand-luggage when I fly with them, but it's not always possible - last year I had to go to Seville for a month and they were the only ones who flew there. Packing for that was fun...

What's really crap is if you need a connecting flight and both are Ryanair, you have to pay for the bag TWICE each way. With these new fares, it would cost you €200 just for the pleasure of bringing a suitcase with you! I have family living in Menorca and the two-flight journey is really the only way of getting between here and there in the winter when the charter flights are off. Visiting them just got a whole load more expensive :(

Really don't see what they have against hold luggage.

    Staff, I imagine.

As far as I could see I used to book with Aer Lingus. Thats an Aer Lingus flight.

There should be a comment on it stating something along the lines of "Operated by Aer Arann." at the bottom somewhere.

Without checking on their site, I know from flying with them before that it would be actually cheaper on a lot of their routes to buy another seat for your luggage with this €50 each way charge, mad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,504 ✭✭✭keeponhurling

They are a private company, they can charge what they like. They'll charge what they think is best for their company and profits.

Our choice as customers is to either use their services, or not.
If you think they don't offer value, don't use them.

You clearly don't search enough so. I've always found them having cheaper flights (wayyyyy cheaper) than other airlines.

What's with all the moaning - Simple solution, just wear all your clothes on the flight.

Hmm, do you have a source for that? I believe Ryanair operates a standardised and highly modern fleet of 737-800s, designed to land in the worst weather conditions.

I'm thankful for Ryanair opening up the market but like a lot of other people here, I'm tired of the stress and lack of comfort. Just trying to book a flight on their website is a colossal effort - it's very easy to leave a box unticked and end up paying way more for your bag/priority, boarding, etc.

As a consumer, I'm a fan of honesty, comfort and effciency. I'm at the point now where I'll pay an extra tenner each way to land at a proper airport near my destination of choice, rather than a run-down shack a two hour and €15 bus ride away. Ryanair's extra charges are putting them on a par with their competitiors in terms of choice. €50 for the bag and €15 for the bus? No, I'll book early and fly with Lufthansa and enjoy the comfort.
