So Ryanair are increasing the cost of putting luggage in the hold from €30 per bag to €50.

I fly Ryanair - I just always pack light so I don't need to pay the luggage fee. Would the increase cause anyone to not fly with them now? I don't mean those that already refuse to fly with them.

It probably means they will mostly get passengers flying for a weekend, and will lose a lot of passengers going away for a week or two. €100 euro return is crazy, probably cheaper to go shopping when you arrive in the new country and leave your clothes there.

Really don't see what they have against hold luggage.

meh, ryanair is cheap for the ticket and then piles on the extras. If you can avoid the extras its great. Otherwise just fly with another company if its such a huge increase.

Its a bit nuts all right.
But for the last 15 years, with every unconsumer friendly move they make, we have been claiming that RA had taken one step too far....and low and behold they keep getting it right comercially and getting bigger.
    Scratches head.

I can see longer flights being hit quite hard.A lot of families would fly into the likes of Murcia and rent a villa with bags checked for the summer holidays with Kids rather than the package holiday thing. In terms of this,it might benefit the travel agents.

Personally,it doesn't affect me and i couldn't give two shits once they keep their excellent prices and on time flights.

I'm going to guess they don't like baggage handlers and higher fuel consumption.

The days of cheap flights are over, the idea of using ryanair for a trip that lasts more than three or four days doesn't make sense.

Have not flown with Ryanair for around 6 years and after that it won't be any-time soon.

Bye bye Mr O'Leary, I would rather give the money to Aer Lingus for the comfort.

They want to change everyone's mindset to travel with carry on baggage. Imagine there savings when you dont have check in staff, baggage handlers, baggage trucks.

Can't imagine a couple of 15kg bags making that much of a difference to fuel consumption. At this stage, they should be looking at charging fat passengers if the few kilos of extra weight is making that much of a difference.

If the complete flight package is still cheaper than the closest competitor (although I can't really fathom how), I don't really see the problem.

Really don't see what they have against hold luggage.

Saving a few lbs in luggage per person will save them millions in fuel consumption.

I wonder do they make more from hold luggage compared to the cost of just scapping it altogether. I'm surprised they haven't banned it yet if its costing too much fuel etc.

Unless youre going away more than a week, it shouldnt be a problem, 10kg of hand luggage is plenty for a weeks worth of clothes and supplies.

    I
Really don't see what they have against hold luggage.

You need to pay baggage handlers, you need to rent space and check in space, you have a slower turn around time. If a passenger with a baggage on board gets delayed in pub/ shops etc you have to look for the bag and take it off as oppose to just leaving them there

I only fly Ryan Air if I abso****inglutley have to.

If ryan air flights are still much cheaper than there rivals and it suits me, then of I go, If not then I fly with some one else.

for me, not a problem. for mrsTeal, you're having a laugh, you can't carry much in the way of cosmetics in hand luggage :pac:

Maybe they'll use the money to revise their fuel policy.

Everyones response is that it's horrible and dreadful. What ryanair does, aer lingus copy. I'll give it a week before aer lingus increases their baggage charges.

Yep, used to think that way until we had our 1st kid, then it's simply impossible. The Ryanair increases will probably push them out of the family market - which MO'L will probably use to advertise 'crying free flights'. It's a very high increase, which as someone else said adds up to €100 extra per adult going on a weeks holiday, over the cost of the ticket. Strange too that this came days after they announced huge profits again, so it's not like their cash strapped.

    Beat me too it.

From now on the standard Uryan Air seat will be unallocated and in the hold. Seats in the daylight section above will cost €30 per person per leg. Daylight robbery.

you dont know many women,do you?

Ryanair is my last resort airline. will only fly them if the ticket is significantly cheaper.nothing against the business model but i only fly twice a year and i find Ryanair quite unpleasant on all fronts.

That is true, but he does not have control over Aer Lingus which is more to the point for me.

With a system of bike wheels and pedals for those less fortunate below, so that they can turn down the engines mid-flight and save even more fuel.

They don't have anything against hold luggage. They just like taking money off people. I fly with Ryanair a lot, they are perfect for short breaks. Cheap and have always been on time when I've flown with them.

Dealing with Ryan air always feels too adversial really. I mean you just want to go from a to b in as stress free manner as possible. With them from the moment you book till you get off the plane it just feels like you got to be on high alert the whole time...

I mean its great what they've done and the part they've played in making travel more affordable but it just seems that to me they're going to hit a tipping point where the amount of people they lose as customers is going to overtake what they gain with extra charges etc. I think that if they could take the pain out of dealing with them they'd get a lot of the casual flyier market back. The whole abrasive approach just feels a little done now...

Hahahaha. So true. Did I print off the boarding card right? How heavy is my bag? How wide is my bag - will it fit in the measuring thing? Will I be able to get it out again while being watched by Ryanair staff?

I always find I get into the plane and once I sit down I can finally breathe again. I think, 'got this flight for €50 return to London. Fcuk you, Ryanair!'

50 Euro return? I was never guilty of paying that much.

I never understood how they used to sell the seats for 10 euro each way including taxes when the air tax was 10 euro each way by itself. I felt so guilty that they were losing money on me that I actually one time bought a packet of their smokeless cigarettes.

€30 I could just about stomach, €50 is really pushing it and I think I'd be considering using someone else.

Aer Lingus have a 32" seat pitch, Ryanair have 30"... :pac:

I think the answer to this is pretty simple, just compare airlines that fly where you want to go, if you're not taking bags, Ryanair might be cheaper, if you are taking bags, then this will probably tip the balance. All it takes it 10 minutes to compare, figure if you'll need to take bags or not, work that into the pricing and see which one is best suited to you.

Then of course there's things like timings of flights and if Aer Lingus or BA is in question then there's the loyalty schemes to also keep in mind. It's not complicated though, just takes a little effort on the consumers part.

Leg room, staff are generally more pleasant, they don't **** you over if your bag is slightly over the weight or slightly over the size. They give you a pre-assigned seat so its not like a cattlemart .

I don't worry about any of this because I have the correctly sized bag, and printing pieces of paper is easy. (Pro tip you can print as many copies of the boarding ticket as you want).

I used to travel to Bristol a lot - say 20 times a year and only took Aer Lingus if Ryanair were booked. AL had a worse plane, a slower journey, slower loading times and was - according to reports - less reliable.

Ryanair has the best fleet. More likely to fly in fog and snow. Get the right sized bag and get on.

I am sure Aer Lingus are better on other routes though.

    What? It's completely stress free.

    Whenever before trip: Book flight
    Day before: Check in
    Flight: Get on plane

    Done

I wouldn't have a problem with this if they allowed American style carry on's. Increasing the hand luggage allowance is useless as long as we are confined to 60cm x 40cm x 20cm. You'd have to fill the thing with stones to use 10Kg

With all the space they are going to have in the hold they could easily implement a check at the gate system like they have in the states with a bigger bag. Unless their next plan is to come up with extra galley slave class seats in the hold.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 726 ✭✭✭Shamrock231

Both Aer Lingus and Ryanair planes are equally capable, infact all Aer Lingus planes are equipped to land in fog where as only 80% of Ryanair's are. (It's not as important to Ryanair due to their fleet size, they can send equipped aircraft to foggy places, Aer Lingus has most planes in Dublin, so if Dublin is foggy, all need to be able to land in fog.)

Neither airline can land in snow, that's the law.

You're probably confusing Aer Lingus with Aer Arann, who operate Aer Lingus's regional flights as Aer Lingus Regional.

Personally I think €50 per bag, each way, is just to much, and tbh would definetly turn me off flying with them! As it is, if there is an alternative, even a bit more expensive, ill go with them!
I used to work for Ryanair before as a mechanic and used to fly over and back to Germany every week, unlimited baggage weight on a staff ticket, I made sure to get value for it while I could!!! :D

I have rarely found cheaper flights to London, which is where I usually fly.

im flying in there for €50 return next weekend, which is unreal value. and ive got it, much cheaper in the past also.

Ryanair to London, is always excellent value from Dublin, as they are for most routes.
