    Not what you said originally:
I know I stopped listening when the lads left, and haven't gone back, at all.

That reads like you stopped listening the second they left.

So when are the listening figures out so we can see what the real effect has been?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44 JJ10

I think it's apparently clear at this stage that's it's the unique format of the show that is the reason for the success...

I can't stand Parkinson. Personally I don't find the show anywhere near as good. Saying that, I'm a big football fan and think that they are not paying much attention to the game. Plenty to report on like, confed cup, u20 world cup and u21 euros that had Isco and Thiago, transfer news, irish clubs in europe. Someone can correct me, I don't listen to the show near as regular now as I used to so maybe I'm missing them discuss...Also has anyone any idea about the ratings since the presenters changed?

Hardly listen to the show myself anymore, the odd time I do i find its a pale imitation of its predecessor. At saying that, in radio terms , the current incarnation of OTB is the only show in town as long as the original lads are podcast only, in reality as much as I admire Eoin and co, they will in the long run struggle to be relevant with only one podcsat a week. In this age of 24 hour immediacy its all about instant reaction, podcasts just dont do that. Bad move lads.

I've listened to the new show occasionally. It's fine I suppose, couldn't care less if I miss it, I'd say I tune in about 10 times less than I did with the old show. Can't handle Parkinson's contributions. He really grates me, don't know how he got the gig to be honest.

I listen to the podcast every week and I enjoy it a lot more than I have ever enjoyed the new OTB crew when I listened to them.

JNLR out on 25th July - but i dont think this will put the matter to rest.

The survey is a rolling twelve months. The release on the 25th will cover July 12 to July 13. So, 4 months of the survey will cover off the ball in the 'new' format and 8 of the old off the ball - there is no way to separate these.

They should change the title of the programme to "The Colm Parkinson Show". Anytime I ever tune in these days, that guy seems to completely take over any conversation that's going on.

Only occasionally listen now myself and while it is not atrocious it will never reach the level of the old show. Their GAA coverage is the best thing about the current show even though Parkinson is not overly likeable. Gilroy still has his flaw of meandering through three or four sentences before asking a simple question.

Tried to listen tonight. Parkinson came on and read off a script. The only time I have heard anything worse was the odd time I have had the misfortune to watch fair city. radio off now and im going out to enjoy the sun.

Did they talk much about Dan Martin tonight?

Did they talk much about Dan Martin tonight?

they have paul kimmage on every night of the tour.

i find they have way more about the league of ireland on it nowadays, usually on tuesdays and thursdays. i still haven't heard anything about it on the second captains podcast.

dunno but they should be giving the guy plenty of coverage. impressive what he's done. cycling is in his blood though

is Parkinson a bit harry dimple?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,748 ✭✭✭Swiper the fox

I don't think you could ever accuse OTB in it's original or new incarnation of ignoring cycling, they seem obsessed with it, Kimmage had a very interesting piece on the show recently about Dan Martin and his family, including the bad blood between his dad and Stephen Roche

I thought that he could be too.

Does he have a job outside of Newstalk?

Kimmage of course is being very forthcoming on Stephen Roche's shady past, a fact which get's ignored for some reason in this country, we turned on Michelle Smith very quickly afterall.

I admire him because he tell's like it is no matter who's involved. He isn't scared of making enemies in the tight Irish cycling scene. I suppose after what he took on how could you fear anyone in the sport?

Very interesting. I was having a trouble working it out in my head how he could be so critical of Dan's uncle, yet be out cycling with him last Sunday..

I'm getting very very sick of Woolly. He's just about tolerable in small doses but now it's overkill :mad::mad::mad::mad:

Last night on the show, Joe was describing how before they were commentating at the Leinster Final on Sunday, some lad came up to him and said "That Parkinson fella" (as Parkinson was standing next to him and inching away) "you know, he's good".

Parkinson was clearly delighted on air last night at this vindication of his ability as a sports broadcaster.

Well that's 2 of ye so;)

Unless you were in the Premium level of the Hogan Stand at the Leinster Final on Sunday. In that case its still just the one.

    Right. That really happened.

Wooly is a good football analyst and talks sense...
Unless his talking about his own playing career, then some of the stuff he talks about like always blaming managers for his own faults was kinda bizarre..
But once he got over talking about himself and started analysing a game he is as good as what's there

Listened in last night for about half an hour - the first time in a while.

There was a discussion about fights in GAA following on from the Cavan/Fermanagh scenes at the weekend. Piece lasted about 20 mins (8.20 - 8.50pm) and while entertaining, it didn't really cut it for me.

Maybe it's summer time and this is emblematic of programmes in July but it was a very light piece with no structure, just a general chit chat about fights Wooly had been involved in and remembered from club days and other big games through out the years marked by big bust-ups.

Even within the 20 mins I think they could have done something more constructive E.G. are there more or less fights now
than 10 years ago, how big an influence are tv cameras in highlighting everything (this was touched on briefly), what's the typical sanction and is it commensurate with the foul, have the sanctions changed over the years. How are the GAA tackling this and whatever happened to the 'third man in is sent off' rule?

At times it felt like I was with a group of friends reminiscing in a pub.

I thought that GAA fights bit would never end, tedious stuff. The interview with Paul Kimmage earlier on more like it though.

Colour me a fan of Wooly too. Really enjoyed Seán Boylan talking about how he was great and you could literally feel Wooly blush through the medium of radio.

Massively turned the corner on Ger too, especially for interviews. You wouldn't miss Eoin as much, which says a lot. It's Ken and Murph that you'd miss particularly IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,748 ✭✭✭Swiper the fox

Ken is the only one they can't replace, Wooly is annoying but he is a good football analyst, Murph was just annoying. Gilroy is a bit of a wanker but he's as good a host as Eoin.
Some of ye appear to be boycotting the show like it was your mates who got shafted, I listen to the show to get good Irish sports news and discussion, nothing has changed.

The brilliant thing about Off The Ball was that you got 3 feckin hours in the evening of stuff about sport. For me, the problem with "de lads" OTB was that they started to believe that their personalities were the most important parts of the show. The interaction palled after a while.

Sorry, I want insight, not bullsh*te.

I think they had a good balance between a personality driven show and their own take on sports. I think the one thing you could say is the show was never boring with them there. They always went beyond just regular analysis and gave most sports a fair and balanced analysis, and when that failed they always had some fun. I can't say that I find the current incarnation as fun, they still do good interviews but the fun element is lost and I think that's because the presenters lack a little something, then again that could come in time working together. Let's hope they don't change this setup too soon and not give them a fair chance.
