I think there's an inter and junior sc coming up in the first two weeks in August in Druids heath

There's also a strokes open off the blues coming up and whoever wins the gross will set the course records

Is that the absolute back sticks? Or are the Blacks the farthest back? Keep us posted about those Opens would love to play in those. Cracker of a golf course. Must be an absolute beast off the backs.

Decent first round of 77 got me out in one of the last 4 groups and only 3 shots off the pace, but I was just too tired come the 2nd round and the last 9 holes were 9 holes too much for me, finished with an 82 in the 2nd round.

Winner shot 75-70 for +5 aggregate for the 2 rounds. Serious shooting!

Course was in amazing condition, but some of the pins were ridiculous and the speed of the greens must have been at least a 10 on the stimpmeter ( quicker than our greens in athlone were and they measured 9.5 at the time ).

    Love playing in Athenry!

I'll post up here, blacks are absolute backs. Blues are still a monster. Think 12 becomes greater than 500 yards probably making it one of the longest par 4's in the country. Think 3,5 and 11 will be in excess of 230 yards each and 2/4 become about 580.

Thanks. That will sort the men from the boys :)

Blacks are probably bordering on Silly. Didn't Darren Clarke famously have to hit driver on one of the Par 3's on the back 9 (11th?) when he played there?

think a good few had to, on some of the par 4's there an additional 100-150 yards between the greens and blacks. its just mental but looking forward to it. Have played the blues a few times and as long as the conditions are ok its not too bad but I think CSS will be about 78 considering CSS is usually around 76 off the whites.

Has anyone played Co. Meath and how would they rate it? I've a free pass to play Sat and it looks to be the only scratch cup in the Leinster area. However when looking at the online time sheet it's booked from 08:50 to 12:26 with three different societies, seems a bit strange to have so many societies out during the busy period of a Junior, Intermediate and Minor scratch cup.

its a traditional parkland - not long but tight enough in places. you dont need to drive the ball long and some of the par 4s you could take hybrid/long iron. greens are in very good nick, leinster boys is on here atm.
dunno about the societies tbh...make hay while the sun shines i guess!

No, didn't in the end. A couple of hours before I was going to book my brother rang me asking if I was interested in joining him a game in Tulfarris so opted for that instead. Will have to leave Co. Meath for again. Playing the 36 in Blainroe tomorrow which could be quite a challenge in this cracking weather.

Not a scratch cup as such, but I see the Sir John Lumsden in Royal Dublin has been restored to a 36 hole event after having been only 18 last year. 50e to play, was 40e two years ago if I recall, but still just about worth it if you get the weather!

Handicap cut off of 9, but may go lower depending on the 81 lowest entrants.

I'd love to play in a scratch cup but I always seem to miss the local ones due to shift work. Missed out on Dunmore east and Tramore last month.

There is only an online timesheet for members. They recently only set up BRS and I don't think they know how to use it properly!

What time do you wanna play at? I could put your name down with me depending on the time?

Not fully sure if I can play yet but thanks for offer. I'll ring up club later in week if I can make it, won't know until late Thursday

For those that play in Junior Scratch Cups, do you often see players out of the handicap range playing in the competition.

Was looking at a time-sheet for a friend and went onto Howdidido to have a look at the handicaps of players on the sheet which had slots beside them.

A good few were in the Intermediate range.

As much as I'd like to play in a few with friends, I've never entered one thinking that I couldn't because of my handicap which is 12.

Or is it a case of what's the harm, he's only out for a round of golf.

Would certain clubs pull you up on the day if you entered the competition as a visitor booking online with a handicap out of the range?

    Any thoughts?
