If anybody gets their hands on an Irish order form could they post a link here? ... haven't got any helpful feedback from MS yet

Why don't you look through the thread? A link was already posted.
however the colleges don't appear to be engaged with this offer at all.

Microsoft really trying to f**k up this offer and the device sales in general.

I have the surface RT for the past month and its an excellent tablet it has virtually replaced my laptop plus with the full size USB port I can plug in memory sticks, USB NIC etc and I have no storage or connection limitations like the iPad, plus display and battery life every bit as good as the iPad.

I do not understand why they do not just sell this device like the xBox, put it in retail and a bit of marketing behind it and not that crappy initial advertisement.

For the education offer they should retail it like they used do Office Home and Student leave the individual buy it and then get the rebate or something like that...

I have looked through the thread, as well as trawling through plenty of websites. I've seen the order form linked in this thread but that's the US pricing. I've seen specific order forms for UK, australian, NZ, italian and dutch customers... I presume there will be a specific one released for Ireland, so I thought somebody on here might have seen it. No reply from MS regarding same question

It doesn't look like any school/college in Ireland is taking this up which is why you can't find an order form. If you're a school head or something and are interested in ordering a batch for your school just email Microsoft and ask for an order form. Simples.

simples to ask, but not simples to get. The sales team for MS Ireland have no other information than send an email to the surfaceedu address.

I've asked MS for a form for Ireland - I emailed them last Saturday (after waiting 10 days for a response to my original email) and still don't have it, but i suspect they're getting so many emails to the one email address that it'll take another few days to get it. Why they couldn't set up one address and coordinator per country is beyond me.

I've gotten the same reply from MS Ireland about emailing the surfaceedu address, which is a little frustrating. However, it brings me back to my original post... if anyone is lucky enough to get an Irish order form from MS, could they kindly post it here. I'll obviously do likewise if I hear something in the meantime. Thanks

this offer seems stupid to me. Schools and colleges don't have the cash to order these devices. Some students may want them but with the summer break schools and colleges are not in touch with students....

The bigger school and colleges order in hardware for students every year during the summer.

    This is fu*k*ng annoying!
They should have just let the buyer proof there in college e.g us!
They give us the educational discount ...

well, I volunteered to co-ordinate an order for our primary school. The school will buy 2, the parents association will buy 2 and there will be an option for parents to order 1-2 per family, and we may get sponsorship to buy another 1 or 2 for the school. Once I get the order form from MS, I'll send a letter to parents, with a closing date of early August & only prepaid orders will be fulfilled. It's not going to be too much work - I hope!

I'd imagine they are doing it this way as they only want a limited number sold (they are selling it at cost price or even at a loss I'd imagine) so that the students who missed out will be jealous and want to buy it at RRP.

I can imagine that they want to influence some future software developers into Win-RT software developing. Especially in western countries, people are focused on Java programming as that's the easiest way to earn money while devolving for Apple devices. It's hard to find good .Net developers who can speak fluent English (and even, they are expensive).

maybe, but that would be a very long term thought for MS. I doubt the Surface business unit gives a flying feck about influencing software development and is more worried about being way behind on sales and decided to go on a solo run with this edu offer to shift some units before the next surface comes out. Without thinking it thru and having a dedicated order process for each country.

Quelle surprise, demand is high for the surface at this pricing and now they can't cope with the volume of enquiries and may or may not actually fulfill orders outside of the US.

Something like that I reckon. As I pointed out earlier in the thread, when I contacted D.I.T. they knew nothing about this offer and weren't interested in it either.

Has anyone tried contacting the business post who wrote the article in the OP?

They should be able to supply a contact in MS who gave them the original details for the article. If not I am sure they would love to do another article on how its proving practically impossible for any one in Ireland to take up the MS offer, news is their bread and butter after all and it might just inspire some action from MS Ireland that way.

For that price you do not get the touch cover which is essential in my mind for its use as a laptop replacement as-well as a tablet.

The reviews about right, a good mix of decent users mixed in with the usual Microsoft haters and Android Fanbios (used be the Linux crowd) that will down vote and rubbish anything Microsoft. To be fair most apple users do not have the same hatred.

As I said earlier its a super device its the only tablet capable of replacement of your laptop / pc. With an iPad you still need a PC/MAC to sync and backup your data, the iCloud 5GB ceiling is hit pretty soon plus you have no backup & expansion capabilities like the Surface RT.

The Microsoft UK online store has a student price of £252 for the Surface, which is just under €300. You are able to select Irish universities and colleges to confirm you are a student. You may need to use Parcel Motel to deliver though.

Interesting! One wonders why they aren't doing this on the Irish site. I'll ring them tomorrow. Their number is 1800 71 0200 if anyone else wants to phone them as well. Might put a bit of pressure on.

My feeling is that if you want a tablet for work that is closer to a laptop replacement than any other tablet I've used, then it's an excellent device.

The big "but" is that you should NOT count on the app store to enhance it that much. If what's there out of the box isn't enough, then don't bother.

Luckily for me, MS Office (especially OneNote) / email / calendar and the integration with SkyDrive on my PC makes it really useful.

I've installed very few apps on it as the ecosystem is pretty poor. My team have developed an app for our product to run on the surface tablet and it's been a very frustrating experience working with the Microsoft app store, so it's no surprise to me that there aren't loads of apps for it.

Surface RT is only let down by lack of apps. Might change as time goes on, but i think people feel that MS will drop it as soon as Intel gets chips into the same power bands as ARM processors.

Might just buy one though, to see what it's like...

Blackberry treated developers the same way when the playbook came out. By the time they 'wised up' and made it easier the developers had gotten annoyed and moved on/back to other systems. It's a shame when you want to support something but the company makes it so darned hard!

I'd have to disagree there. Windows 8 also lets it down big time. The Windows store can take forever to open up (that even happens on my core i7 laptop) and far too many things throw you back to the destop (changing some settings being a big one). Luckily, 8.1 fixes a lot of the problems with 8 so with that update it should be good.
