Anyone know of any links as to where I can pick of these up :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 83 ✭✭markf1982

bought one of these recently as a present for a parent and have to say its a quality bit of kit. Have a nexus tablet myself but am thinking of getting one of these as i know a couple of teachers who can prob order one for me.

Apps are limited but has office and flash enabled explorer. plus the full size usb port is very handy.

As said, at this discounted price its hard to find too many faults

Firefox with Flash for ICS works fine on the Nexus 7 if you want to view flash content, the only time I really need to is when i want to watch streaming sports, just fire up FF and away i go.

Most of the information we already knew, but it appears that it might not be as easy as I thought to get my hands on one. I will get back to the college but I doubt they will just sell them on to students at the discounted price. Might be too much work for them.

Fact that it needs to all go via the school/college, is it not a bit of a stupid offer period considering most schools and colleges are closed, or near closed, for the summer? Seems like just some free PR for Microsoft.

3rd level colleges are open all year round, unfortunately postgrads don't get 3 months summer holidays!

I felt another touchpad moment coming along,,,,,,,

Doubt the colleges will sell them on. Id imagine there'd be many official loops for someone in the college to jump through to get sanctioned to buy these for students using college funds and sell them on.

I got in touch with DIT. At first they hadn't even heard of the offer. Then they got back to me with the following:
Hi , Microsoft have sent this on to me: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ukschools/archive/2013/06/25/academic-pricing-on-surface-rt.aspx …. Unfortunately, it looks like it isn't open to individual

Doesn't seem like DIT are too arsed about availing of it.

I got back to them saying I know it isn't open to individuals to order but would the college be ordering them to sell on to students.
    I haven't heard back.

Doubt many institutions in Ireland will buy these things in advance and then wait to see if Students want them. Silly on MS's part. If they just let folks buy them by confirming their status at an institution and have an institution sign off on it they'd make a lot more money.

Just posted on Microsoft facebook page, basically telling them that the promotion in its current form is flawed and that they should be accepting applications for a device themselves and using the students college email address to verify they are a student.

Might be a good idea if you like or also comment, if Microsoft are using this for free PR lets make a fuss on their page and give them some bad PR

It would be good if they just let us students provide sufficient info that we are students in our respective colleges and give us the discount that way!

Exactly, they offer a lot of their software to students for free through Dreamspark. Why not use something like that?

It must be that they want colleges to start using them to give them more exposure. Oh well :(

I tried few years back to no avail. My college was ripping students off asking to pay for licenses they got free, nobody in Microsoft couldn't be arsed about it. I was being sent from one person to another and at the end I just gave up.

I talked to one private educational institution and they said they are not interested at all, even if most of courses they provide are IT related. They are aware that Win RT is "dead end" and there is no point to introduce it to learning program. In fact they are quite busy during summer break, preparing for 2013-14 season.

    DIT got back to me after I asked them to clarify if they would be buying them as an institution and thus make these available to students;

    This was their reply:
...........there are no plans to but the products.

    Disappointing.
