Really? I know 4 people who tried the whole tablet for college/work idea, it lasted less than 6 months and all 4 are now back on laptops.
if you want it for office it's going to be more like 250€ ish though (assuming you'll actually want to type). To me I don't see that as being worth the cash over say buying a BT keyboard and using google docs or the like on the ipad mini.
Not having a go at all by the way (if it works for you, that's the only important factor), it's just I've a hard time lining up the uses and the price in my head...

I'd never use mine as a full time PC replacement - but it has definitely been miles ahead of any other tablet I've tried to use for travel or meetings. Especially the smaller tablets.

You're right that there are cheaper alternatives, but the extra productivity for me far outweighs the price difference.

Especially with the Windows 8.1 RT update that is coming. This adds in essentials like offline skydrive and Outlook 2013.

Given the shambles of the organisation of the entire deal it's entirely possible the person was talking out of their arse. In any case, surface is still an incredibly bad deal over an N7 at 190.

surface is a 10" tablet, you're not comparing like with like.

I use my nexus 10 constantly for college and it works great for the most part, the only issue is having a decent Office package and a keyboard for some tasks and it looks like this ticks both those boxes

This is a farce of a thread to be honest. If nothing else it illustrates what a rinky dink operation Microsoft is in Ireland. It's actually quite scary; reading between the lines

I assume you are a student and your school/college isn't buying any? Then you should blame your school/college and not Microsoft. It was quite clear from the get go that this would be the ordering process, no need for sour grapes.

In fairness, there are a lot of institutions that are unaware that this promotion exists

Oh I have no doubt. But blaming Microsoft Ireland for that is really nit picking. Once a student asks their school/college if they can order one, thus letting them know about it, and then them still not wanting to make an order, is hardly Microsoft's fault.

has it been clarified what an educational institution is? primary, secondary? my friend runs a montessori school. can it be ordered through all these?

How do you know if this is available at your institution? My brother is heading to university this year and I'd consider organising the family to organise a group to pay for it

Emailing, calling or dropping in to them I guess. There isn't a list online or anything like that. :)

Has anyone a link to the ordering page?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,503 ✭✭✭bidiots

What ordering page? Have you read the thread?

This is a pain right now!
If Microsoft done this right they would have sold a lot more tablets here!
They could have at least presented there discounts to each college!
Then there may have been more interest!
I take it 99% of us here would buy one if it it wasn't so bloody hard to get through to Microsoft though any medium twitter, email , etc!

They are just selling off remaining stock, probably at a loss, as the RT is blowing. They don't need a lot of interest, they have generated just the right amount of interest that they wanted to.

I guess our ship has sunk!
As to buying one at that good price for now anyway!

Just to reiterate clearly an educational institution themselves must directly order it with a purchase order number, no-one else can.

Indeed! And none of them want too...

Can we get this thread closed? It's kind of pointless really. There's no 'bargain' as no institutions are ordering them.

Rather than just thinking of institutions ordering them why not as your department? Logistics might be easier as there is only 25 in the class.

I've sent an email to my department head asking if they would consider ordering it for our class if there was interest. Waiting to hear back from them (sent late last night).

Not really. The "institution" doesn't need to order them as such - i.e. the IT department at DCU, say, do not have to have a meeting and decide whether or not they want to order a bunch of these for the university (well, they can, but it's unlikely). Anyone in the institution who can get a PO number generated can theoretically order one, although there may be restrictions with different grants, departments, etc. In a large university, hundreds of people will be able to do this. Most lecturers with a research grant, say, will be able to order one if they want without consulting "the institution" and - at the price - very few questions will be asked, if any.

Can we join your class? *wink wink* :P

    No.

If I was ordering it maybe but if there other is through the college I wouldn't have thought it possible.

This is where the problem will arise, the red tape involved in a simple process that this should be, is head wrecking. It would be easier for schools as the process may be slightly simpler...

Depends. If Microsoft are already registered as a supplier, there shouldn't be much of an issue really.

Depends how anal the accountancy department is. I used work for a major educational institution and the accountants were not flexible at all, made it hard to buy things you needed and had funding for.

Also because it's IT related you might need the go ahead from the IT department, and we all know what a bunch of nice, accommodating, people most IT departments are...

It depends on the procedure of taking money from staff/students, which opens up a can of worms, accounts wise.
