My ma was talking to an Eircom engineer yesterday in her work who said that Carlow is going live tomorrow. (12th) Also, if any of you live in Carlow you'd know that there was no electricity in most of the county yesterday, well according to this engineer that was an issue that occurred while laying or activating the fibre. Not sure really. But hopefully tomorrow will be the day :)

It probably is live now but they will only put it live on the map or inform customers tomorrow. Funny though. :D

Yeah, Eircom's never the most reliable source lol. I live close to two cabs so I hope that'll be the one I'm connected to. I'm with Sky though.... :/

Will your family be switching over in the future? Is it just for Carlow town that the engineer said?

Eh, well Sky will over fibre soon enough as they'd be stupid not to. Yeah just Carlow town and the surrounding areas. Tullow is 2014 I think and so is Myshall. I live in Graiguecullen which is only just outside Carlow town so it includes my area apparently

lol. I didn't realise the Laois/Carlow border goes straight through the town. You are on the Laois side I see. :)

I'm less than 5 ,minutes from Carlow town so. And I'm on the Carlow side actually ;) Graiguecullen is on both sides and its really a matter of opinion as to say if you're from Carlow or Laois. But I'm from Carlow

Edit: So anyway tomorrow will hopefully be the day for a lot of us.

I ordered the 70Mb package yesterday and Eircom called today to arrange the appointment for the engineer to come which was nice!

However the girl apologised and said I can actually only get the 50MB package? Still very happy as I'm currently paying €66.26 monthly for the 'up to 24Mb' and UPC isn't available, but does anybody know why the 70MB isn't available? Might call back tomorrow to double check.

Perhaps there was a high uptake of eFibre packages in your area? Maybe you should ask if any of your neighbours have got it too? I really don't know though. Going from 24mb to 50 is still really good though ;)

It's not available because you're too far from the cabinet to be able to get it so they won't sell it to you.

The speed drops off very rapidly as you move a bit away from the cabinet.

does anyone know how to login onto the new efibre router?

the old password and username from the old router aren't working for me

    Thanks for the responses :pac:

The new cab they put in is actually very close to my house, but I think I may be a bit farther from the local exchange so that could be it.

The wiring from your house to the cabinet might not go the way you think though.

I know some relatives of mine have a cabinet litterally across the street from their house on the opposite side of a wall.

However, the lines actually run the whole way through their housing estate for about 800m to get to the cabinet!!

Their VDSL speeds weren't great at all.

From what I can understand of the Eircom Wholesale Spreadsheet some of the cabs in Graiguecullen will be live this month and others not until Sept or later.

Luck of the draw I guess.

Thanks for that. According to the spreadsheet Sleaty Road which is the road my estate is on which has two visible (As far as I can tell) cabinets is apparently going live in August. I'm not exactly in a rush anyway being with Sky, I'm just anxious to know what speeds I can *eventually* expect.

I'm nearer the park and my nearest is going live in September so it says. My sister lives on the Port Laoise Road and near her estate has got a second normal cabinet but according to the spreadsheet it isn't getting VDSL at all. I recently signed her up for SKY broadband and they said they weren't really in any hurry to change people over to fibre once their areas went live but they would "monitor the situation".

I'm UPC and most likely staying UPC but I won't hesitate to let them know that there is a VDSL cabinet very close and Eircom offering me 70/20 when I renegotiate contract.

UPC will undoubtedly click a mouse and increase the upload speed

Hybrid coax-fibre DOCSIS 3 networks are only beaten by fibre to home. VDSL isn't in that league really. It do, for now, but it's an interim technology on the way ti FTTH to avoid capital expenditure.

Does eircom's offering have better upload speeds than UPC?

Do we know if Sky are going to offer fibre anytime soon?

Where is this spreadsheet everyone talks about?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,085 ✭✭✭SpaceTime

Well, still no sign of my local cabinet going live. I've given up at this stage. Think I'll investigate upc connection at this stage. Some engineering work involved but, might be worth it.

Well the FTTC cabinet is in so long there's that ivy growing on it and it hasn't been commissioned. Whole rest of the area is live and it apparently has fibre and power connected.

I think they just don't care because there are only maybe 80 homes connected to it and a lot of UPC. We're usually low priority.
