Nothing wrong with celebrating July 4th. Or welcoming US visitors.

It's when we bent over backwards to facilitate the military use Shannon Airport I have a problem with.

My local in London celebrates the 4th (owner is from Detroit). He also puts a do on for St Patrick's, Bastille Day, St George, Halloween, Guy Fawkes etc etc. Nothing like a bit of variety.

    :o

Can't believe I thanked Old Hippy on 2 seperate threads.

American football is nearly all set pieces. Only the lineout in rugby is rehearsed to such a degree.

Rugby is a far more fluid, free flowing and expressive game.

I think it's a good idea. It's a lot better than that poxy arthurs day. Although, celebrating it on the saturday before instead of the 4th is a bit sad.

Personally no, but since we built the place, wrote their national anthem and found refuge there for generations. Then ya, it kinda makes sense in a way.

Did we write their Anthem? I found on Wikipedia this guy Francis Scott Key, but no mention of his Irish roots.

"Francis Scott Key was born to Ann Phoebe Penn Dagworthy (Charlton) and Captain John Ross Key at the family plantation Terra Rubra in what was Frederick County, Maryland (now Carroll County, Maryland).[1] His father John Ross Key was a lawyer, a judge, and an officer in the Continental Army. His great-grandparents were Philip Key and Susanna Barton Gardiner, both of whom were born in London and immigrated to Maryland in 1726.[2][3]"

I live near shannon airport. delighted that the US armed forces get to use it. the only downside is the treehuggers and Woodstock leftovers that feel the need to protest once a month.

I'm an American and I find it strange too. I don't even do anything on the 4th of July as an American myself so cheers!

As near as I can gather, it dates back to 1996, and the visit of USS John F Kennedy to Dublin which coincided with the 4th July weekend. (I won a ticket to go aboard :P) Apparently having a supercarrier (and 5,000+ sailors) swing by was considered something of a significant event, and to make them feel welcome, we threw a fireworks display on the Liffey. (The island also keeled over to the East due to the mass migration of single women looking to hook up with US sailors)

This event was so popular (Hey, any excuse for a party) that such things have happened every year since, although not always with all the fireworks.

    NTM

Oh that's interesting and actually explains it clearly! We love the Irish too, so any chance for our countries to break bread together is good especially if it has significant meaning.

Are you delighted that we were complicit in allowing Shannon to faciliate extraordinary rendition (i.e kidnap) leading to torture?

I saw no tree huggers or Woodstock leftovers at the protests.

The best 4th of July party I have ever been to was at the us ambassadors residence in Phoenix park, hands down.

Other than that I can't see why the Irish would celebrate it, especially at the end of June. Just weird.

American football shouldn't even count as a sport.

I used to think American Football was a load of rubbish until I started to watch it. It's actually quite intriguing once it clicks with you, it's like a game of chess at times. There's no point trying to compare it to rugby, even though it's origins are in early College rugby it evolved into a completely different game.

I don't host or go to Superbowel parties or pledge allegiance to any franchise I just enjoy watching the sport.

I've noticed on Facebuke the last couple of weeks that we now celebrate America's independence day.

Pub's and clubs are falling over themselves with July 4th themed nights. Although a lot of them are being held on June 29th which makes it even worse. I've seen three butchers advertise 4th of July deals and two people on my friends list have invited me to bbq's to celebrate someone else's national holiday.

Will you be saluting Uncle Sam?

    What's next? Thanksgiving?

    Feck off.

Lidl do a 4th July special each year...

Well.... either way, the Irish celebrate neither as a national holiday?

    Why is that.

It's almost like Irish are embarassed to be independent, like it was an odd accident of history.

Its because of the North, the declaration back then in 1916 is not complete. And if we did do a 26 county celebration day you'll have FF'ers and FG'ers fighting each other then that would be a good thing :D

It most definitely isn't like Chess.

Chess players don't get a 15 minute break for a tv commercial ;)

American football is entertaining... when they actually play the sport. Majority of the game is sitting around waiting for them to get ready, or timeouts, or end of quarters, or ads. Makes sitting down to watch a game very trying.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

But you don't need an earpiece to play it. It's just one of the technological additions to the game. The Tour de France uses earpieces.

Football players are among the most athletic sportsmen on the planet.

It's pretty much exactly like Chess: you have two teams of grandmasters on the sideline deciding their moves. Their 'pieces' have different 'moves' and 'strengths'. With the added fun that the 'pieces' have minds of their own and can play the 'move' given to them or try something completely different.

    Endlessly fascinating.

Having played chess and I've watched more than a few NFL games - it's very little like chess. Just because it's tactical doesn't mean "it's like chess"... I see the same analogy used with boxing and having done both I really don't see it.

I've seen the same with Tennis, or Curling. It doesn't apply. But having played Chess and watched NFL games, I disagree that it isn't like Chess. We'll have to disagree on that.

I've notice loads of adds for the 4th of July (the American holiday) or 4th of July-related parties.

Did I miss something? Have we been annexed?
