The actual launch line up for the PS4 is a little underwhelming though.

No one could possibly be excited about a new Killzone game.

This is probably the most unsurprising and obvious thing you have ever posted Dinorex.
You should be ashamed of yourself.
Go to you room and come up with a better statement, one that includes Dinosaurs, monkeys, hats and any combination of the three!

It's not for me. If you don't mind games with not endings like Sim City, the Sims or stuff like that you'll have an absolute ball. It didn't really click with me but I can see how people can love it.

But but.. the orange trees. making some money to by that sweet wicker coffee table to complete the set. I always thought It was very like Harvest moon but with customisation and kind of sandboxy. Haven't played either of those games in a long time though.

XBox One will only support, wait for it, 21 countries on launch. Even if you import the console your games won't work in that country. If you have to move you'll be locked out of all your games.

    Well done Microsoft.

I think it's safe to say not many of us will be early adopters of this console.
Though, given everyone's recent attempts at new console production, a prudent gamer would wait for the first few firmware versions to be released before jumping.

I was addicted to Animal Crossing on the Gamecube for a couple of months. It became routine to check in for a half hour or more every day. Then my favourite creature moved out for no apparent reason. The sadness was overwhelming for I'd say about 90 seconds until I went fishing for another Coelacanth. Then I missed a few days, and went back and the whole place was covered in horrid weeds. I cleaned it, but something had changed, something weed pulling couldn't fix. A few days became weeks, weeks became months, months became a half decade. I imagine my town is now effectively a rainforest, a Tom Nook infested rainforest. Now I can't even make eye contact with Animal Crossing such is the deep, deep shame.

Also, Fez 2 announced. No word on Borderline Racist Attack on the Japanese Games Industry 2 yet. Fingers crossed!

I really don't get those Retron things. Convenient having one box there, but seeing as they are emulation based, why not do away with the box all together & just emulate via pc?

Because some people are lazy and just want to sit down in front of the TV without the hassles of booting up the PC.

Also, is anyone else surprised that there's a booth for the Retron at E3?

That's fair enough to a point, but there's generally easier, cheaper & even lazier options to achieve the same goal. The Retron products sit in a weird grey area between genuine retro experience & overpriced emulators in a box. Using real carts & pads, yet using emulation to run them.

If you're not bothered about using emulation/lack of authenticity, why bother buying a retron that needs real carts & uses real pads? If you do care about such things, why would a retron appeal?

As Nerdkiller says, I suppose they just sit in the nether world between authentic experience & emulated experience.

    Good lord!

Its as if they don't want you to buy the sodding thing at all.

the real chilling factor for me only occured to me during the week, I thought back on all the used games for PS3 and Wii I've bought used over the last few years, not because they were cheaper but because they weren't available new. with the Xbox one once a game is out of print thats it!

I know most if not all games will be available by DL but what if they aren't and what about those people who (ie us) like to have the disc? the whole thing sticks of horse$h1t to me, no thanks.

That's a good point actually. If the game goes out of print then there really is no way of playing it other than a digital copy, but even at that sometimes licenses can expire and the game is pulled from Xbox live arcade or whatever.

I bought Rocky: Legends on PS2 today so myself and my housemate could laugh at the glitchs. Turns out though that LEgends isn't the glitchy one. That one's simply called Rocky. I am disappoint.

Have to agree. I know some people are saying its expensive emulation etc but it will suit certain people.

I'm one of em. I haven't bought a megadrive yet because I can't make my mind up whether to buy it or a snes. I also would like a nes but I only have so much room under my telly and don't want the hassle of havin to pull consoles in and out ever time I want to use them.

I don't want the hassle of pc emulation either and want it on the big telly in my living room. Seriously there is definately a target audience for this.

I'll buy it before buyin the xbox1 that's for sure!

That said under 100dollars means it'll probably retail here closer to 150euro or something equally stupid if it comes this direction so it then comes down to well do I want to spend that level of money on it.

Can't edit my post for some reason..

Anyway meant to add in the save option appeals to me too because a lot of the older games where stupidly hard. I know ye won't like that but seriously I get frustrated and don't have time to keep goin like I used to.

And the scan lines for people like me again with no room for CRT's could be a nice touch.

Surely in your case, something like the OUYA, when its released, would appeal far more than a Retron?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,766 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

But the OUYA will be emulating if anything, at least the Retron lets you use real carts and controllers.
Hopefully the emulated hardware will be subject to revision, the possibility puts it ahead of SoC solutions that are always compromised.

The Retron 5 is Android based, so both are in the same league there. The only difference is the Retron will be a bastardised version of Android thats limited to playing the systems its told to. The OUYA will be fully open, so along with doing everything the Retron does, it'll also do a lot more.

If space under the tv is the selling point here, do people really want pads for each system & carts for each system lying around too? If you care about using original pads & carts, all the while playing through a Retron, you're kinda kidding yourself arn't you? Pretty sure there will be 3rd party adapters made to accommodate real pads on the OUYA anyway

I'd say they're using the same opensource android SNES/Megadrive/NES emulators that are free on the market place - pretty up the frontend a bit and anyway you go.

I'd not hold my breath for too many core emulator updates to be honest.

Still, great idea for the casual gamer :) Although I'd take a OUYA myself..

Is it though? Will a casual gamer buy & collect retro carts? Or would an OUYA appeal more to a casual gamer where you don't need any anything but it?

They might, better deal than paying Nintendo money every 6 months for another version of the same game for the virtual console thingy :)

All Retrons are 'emulation' though in a sense as they're system on chip devices so you're both wrong. :-P
