Did a beer recce this evening and from an extensive search of my local Dunnes stores and O'Briens the only 355 ml bottles I could find were Corona. I know 330 bottles are allowed but just thought I'd put that out there in case anybody is planning on breaking any world records.
Will you not lose time trying to squeeze the slice of lime into the top of the bottle?

Despite not meeting the statutory volume requirements, I think I'll stick with the Coors Light, as there's something fitting about using a beer that rates a '0' on ratebeer.com (plus I had to buy a box of 20 bottles for training purposes, and there's no hope they'll be drank otherwise). Corona Extra, by contrast, manages an impressive score of '1'.

There is a petrol station very nearby, that sells beer. Not sure if they have 330/355ml bottles or cans though, so may be safer on the day to bring your own (and crack a few open on the way over!). This is already shaping up to win Boards race of the year. :)

KC if you think you're gonna go under 5:04.9 I'm not sure light beer is permitted for a WR- I'll have to consult the global steering committee :D

It's still over the 4.3%, but it's only one in a long line of reasons why I won't have to worry about the world record. Now if I wasn't eligible for a (long!) shot at the trophy, I'd have to seriously re-consider.... Anyone want some Coors Light? ;)

Na- I'm allowing light beer as long as its above the 4.3 level....btw- I was thinking that we need to add sub 8 beer mile to the 10 round numbers thread...

Have totally overlooked the training for this and think this is going to end with a 2k run for me next week. Will try to get out on monday for a 800m only problem is logistics of getting drink there and back. This event is far more technical then I first though. Do we have any sub 10 pacers :)

Had my own little Beer 1/2 Mile Trial today.
Put on a hoody, peak cap and dark glasses and headed for the local Centra, waited until there were no other customer's at the till and grabbed a 6 pack of Coors Lite (seems to be the beer of choice so far) handed over an Ayrton Senna and didn't wait for the change.

Fast forward to late afternoon and I head to a local field (I know :(, tried the local rugby club but there were people about) not ideal a bit lumpy and definitely an uphill and downhill section.
Anyway grabbed my 4 markers and went on a few warm up laps to get an idea of a 1/4 of a mile, a few strides and I was ready to go.

Jaysus my chugging has gone to pot, for anyone that knows me I always wear a breathe easy nose plaster when racing as I can't breathe through one of my nostrils, this is a big hindrance when trying to chug, it was down in 5 rather than down in 1.
After the 1st beer away I went on lap 1, getting a few big burps out early doors. Got to the 2nd beer transition and this seemed to take an eternity and double burps followed pretty quickly (I have this bit nailed), lifted the pace now on my uphill finish to clock a surprising 3:57.

Sub 8 is a maybe, need some chugging practice and not 100% sure if Coors Lite is the choice for me.

Have just done two bottles of Coors Light back-to-back in 61 seconds. Splits of 25-36. Doesn't bode well. Easy enough getting the gas back out again though.

BB has inspired me to try a beer half-mile tomorrow. Will be interesting!

Am starting to get worried about this. I can run at a moderate pace for a few miles, but I'm thinking this is going to be an all-out sprint. I've done flip all training and, as I type, I am smoking a cigar.

    Is Desperados an acceptable drink?

I can't see why not, but at 5.9% will you not be totally locked for your final lap?

I just bought a 4 pack of cobra to 'trial'. My plan was to neck 2 consecutive beers now and two later in the night. Had to bail during my first bottle as I couldn't finish it in one go ; way too gassy. Guess I'll just sip on these and trial another beer tomorrow :p

Waiting until dinner time and all the kids are in before sneaking down to the park to do what seems to be 'the session' to do a week before the event. The half beer mile. Will report back later.

That training is no good to ya. It's the running with the beer in the stomach that is key. Especially the burping technique. You will be found wanting next week with your half arsed session. :P :pac:

I am base drinking building. I might try something more race specific later in the week.

Possibly. :P I'm just looking for a beer that I can neck quickly and Desperados is the only one I can think of!

Despite my utter dislike of it, I have tried 3 beers and coors lite seems to be the easiest one to neck :o It seems even some of the beer snobs around here are coming to the same conclusion.
Whatever your choice I hope you give claralara a good run for her money. Whoever wins between you two can legitimately call themselves Irelands top female beer miler :p

I wouldn't rule MarthaStew out, has the stamina to see it through the last 2 laps.

Here you lot, you can't slag off coors lite all the time then come crawling to it for this.

I don't eat Gels on a Friday night for dinner, Coors fits into this bucket - literally!

Dunno about all that. I just hope to finish without making a show of myself. If I can win awards along the way - so much the better!

I've corona and coors light sitting in the fridge. Heading for a chugging session now (the mrs is walking the dog so she is in for an unpleasant surprise of a drunk hubby when she gets home!) I am genuinely nervous about this beer mile, a DNF would be a disaster after the abuse I gave myflipflops on his drop out in the Melbourne beer mile recently.

I'll report back with splits and observations on beer choice.

I've been debating the merits of the three big gulps versus the constant swallow strategy. Three bug gulps equated to a 20 second beer, but felt much better after it, than the constant swallow, which seems to trap the gas. Maybe you could try both approaches and give us a quick review?

    /taking this way too seriously...

90 mins at room temperature on my fastest beer!

I'm not a cider drinker, but have been thinking of its easy drinkability, it might also fit with what we're really doing!!

    On a serious note;
are we going boozing afterwards? If so where?
Anyone going fancy dress in the beer mile....... I'm tempted!

Cider is a non-starter as far as I know

Ok so I started and finished my chugging session before seeing this. I can't do the constant swallow (wait until digger sees this ;)) so gulped instead. I've two kids in the house :o so couldn't run in between so I jogged on the spot for 2 minute intervals.

Beer 1: corona extra. Went down like Monica Lewinsky. 20 seconds felt incredibly comfortable even stopped for a couple of burps during gulps.
2 minute jog on spot. Little bit of burping nothing serious was laughing to myself that sub 8 was going to be a doodle.
Beer 2: corona extra. Went down like a bangkok hooker. Willing but took a little more effort and persuasion, 22.5 seconds.
2 minute jog on spot. Not a lot of burping if I'm honest although the corona seems to be very fizzy when going in. Starting to respect the sub 8 beer mile.
Beer 3: coors light. Went down like an alter boy. Lots of resistance and an awful taste in the mouth. Definitely less fizz than corona and smaller bottle helped but took 40 seconds.
2 minute jog on spot, Time trial ceased as I couldn't face another beer.

I think I need to do a corona specific and coors specific session next week. In theory coors should be easier to keep down but I'm after that beer mile pirate world record so need to keep this in mind! Leaning towards Corona. It also gives me the opportunity to take the piss out of anybody who does;t drink the official 355 ml bottles :)

Forgot to mention this. Temperature of beer is something that needs to be considered. Drquirky has done some reading and apparently the perfect temp is achieved about 15 minutes after taking it out from fridge so I guess 6-8 degrees celcius maybe?

On another but similar note. What are people's nutrition strategies? I think an empty stomach is asking for disater but obviously some sort of soakage is required!

Cider is a no go and yes we are heading for a session after. Krusty and drquirky did a recce Friday as far as I know and will probably PM you the details soon.

I'm heading out now to look for a fight with one of my neighbours or I'm going to try and chat up one of their wives. This beer mile has serious side affects :)
