was 27 deg C here yesterday afternoon for a few hours, got 170 bales made, another 8 acres to pick later to day.

we're well down on quantity but quality is excellent. :)

have a lot of slurry in the tanks going to water it down well and spread next week

factory agent rang looking for lambs for mon morn , told him I have 70 ready but was think of bringing them to abattoir weights cos the sh1t price offered . he is to ring back in an hour with his best quote

    @ whelan1 .. I know Cassidys in Grangebellow are breaking a 99 trooper.

we also dig out a bit of a base to sit them in to keep them level, gone back to concrete drinkers around here tbh

JFC make a lot of good products many top of the range their water troughs aren't in that category.

Plumbing finished this morning. One of the big costs with a paddock system is water. Anyone any tricks for keeping JFC 30g tanks from overflowing on boggy ground?

Family weekend so that draws an end to my time for farming. It made such a difference being at it full time for a full week. Really got stuck in. Up until this it has been a few hours in the morning and evening, an odd half day or full day here and there. A bit of fencing left to do but I can do that ahead of the cows. Once that's done can really get stuck into grassland management;)

    JDI,
You look like your doing a great job. Fencing, roadways, grass and water are top of my list also.
Don't mean to be negative. I have made all the mistakes possible. You are not skimping on everything else so why skimp now?
I know you have troughs, would you consider going with 150gl concrete about €1/ gallon around here.
I saw a great job done with IBC tanks where top was removed and it was fitted with a fast flow ball valve in bottom. He then dug it 2' into the ground. I don't have a pic to hand but will try to get one.

I'm enjoying your progress chart, can't beat good weather and a good digger driver!!

You're used to big numbers de and a 150 gal proably seems handy enough to you but those big troughs are a nuisance to keep clean if your numbers aren't big enough to put pressure on them. I think what's leading to the trough is more important than the trough size in many cases i.e. that your pipework and pump are large enough.

Sucklers don't all drink in one go after milking and if just do it already has some drinkers he may as well use them. If buying more drinkers buy a bit bigger and leave the small ones nearest the pump.

Belter of a day again, what pour on do people use for calves

What's causing them to overflow? Unlevel?

Yeah they'd be fine when you set them up and maybe even for weeks or months. Then a slight trickle starts at a corner, ground softens, corner of trough then saga ever do slightly..... Bend the arm of the ballcock, move it, prop up corner etc. So looking for a simple, preferably free, long term solution.

Thanks for replies folks, should have read the thread before replying above! No money left in the kitty for this year. I've tried an experiment which combines a few of the suggestions given above. For one trough in a boggy spot I've dropped in a few loads of the spoil I used for the road, dug out ~3" for the trough to sit into and reset the trough. It will get 2/3 weeks to set and then we'll see how it goes.

Always used Noromectin around here, actually time to do them soon I think. Usually fit in 3 doses with them before they're sold on in Winter.

those big round jfc drinkers drive me crazy, have 2 of them and have a tap on each of them to turn them off when cows leave field, total disaster

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 592 ✭✭✭maxxuumman

Ya I've been in the process over the last few yrs of getting rid of the JFCs one by one. Replacing them with concrete ones

ignorant c*nt of a cow broke the door of the tractor earlier, the dog jumped out of the tractor and opened it to give me a hand:rolleyes: needless to say we let the dog give her a good spin about to let her know of her wrong doings

+1 they're a fukkin disaster. Bloody bulls love shoving them around too. The only good thing about them is they are light, can easily be emptied out, flung in the back of the jeep and tie the hose to the ballhitch to move them.

Came across a trough made from a tractor tyre on youtube, will try to find it again.

    Snap.
Just had two of the wee French style ones. Hard to beat a cold beer on such a hot day.
Now to operate some dangerous machinery ;)

Iced tea, with a bit of lemon, beats any beer, according to the experts. Yawn -;)

Two Belgian lads just arrived here to go fishing for 2 weeks, have what appears to be a full van full of beer. Happy days :D

Was just lighting a fire as they pulled in so they got to see me making it go 'Fuuuumph' and then running away going Eeeeeek like a little girl hahahaa.

Had to get two bottles from the brother last night. I had ran out. In this weather, nothing like a cold shower at the end of the day followed by a nice cool beer.
