209 just hauled a Cork service through Sallins

At Connolly today at 13:30 there was 231 on the turntable with 226 in front on the loco refueling road. Passing by again at 15:30 and 231 was at the end of the wash road with 226 backing away from it. I don't know what exactly was going on but it looked as if 226 had hauled 231 from the fuel siding and pushed it to the end of the wash road. Strange shunting movements, couldn't figure what was going on exactly.

232 worked the second IWT to Ballina passing through Manulla Junction at 1915.

Not so, there is a collapsible bracket on each Mk4 coach on each side for a tail lamp

You can just about see it in this photo http://www.flickr.com/photos/cork_trains/8487084732/lightbox/ and http://www.flickr.com/photos/cork_trains/8483731604/lightbox/

MU through the front of the DVT is not authorised as the door controls get messed up, so you have to have another 201 (or for the sake of argument a 121) on the back.

Equally if you double head the lead locos door controls are swapped.

Yep, note the IRRS headboard on the DVT here.

I'm intrigued by your comment on the door controls, interesting. :)

So basically just a case of the polarity of the MU cables getting crossed over with no rectifier in place to correct it at that end? And with 2x 201s at one end, it corrects it for one loco but the other swaps is back the wrong way round.

I'm trying to get this train config straight in my head the train was Dublin bound so would of been operated from the DVT but an issue required a loco at this end in front of the DVT and this resulted in the door controls being unusable and the train being out of serivce?

227 just worked an IWT to Ballina passing Sallins @ 11:00

The 201 on the DVT end would not be connected with an MU cable

Door controls would be usable from the rear 201 (as normal) or DVT. Train would be required to carry a second driver or guard as it is no longer considered a push pull DOO service, they operate the doors. If not present train could not carry passengers.

8208 and 233 both spare at Connolly at 15:30. 233 had it's screw coupler in place of the Dellner so it was not up to a quick swap if needed. 8208 was being fueled on the turntable road.

Can anyone confirm where 228 is at the minute? Haven't seen it out in months

Today at 13:00 heading into Connolly I saw a 201 hauling an IWT liner into Northwall yard. 206 and 230 were spare at Connolly shed while 207 was in platform 3 with an Enterprise set.

208 failed this morning or was about to fail so removed on arrival at Belfast.

Sounds like a repeat of 206's near write-off a decade ago.

Sounds like a job well done by the crew/driver uncoupling and moving her away from the passengers. Is there no fire suppression system fitted to the 201's?

Yes there is, they are fitted with an FM 200 extinguisher.

It wasn't removed from the train, unless the driver was able to push it. I think media are mixing up that many passenger were evacuated and some had to stay on board at the opposite end of the train.

The BBC picture with the fire crews around loco 230 show it still coupled to the train, sounds like a mix up alright.

Does anyone know how it's implemented on the 201's? Going by the reports it appears it failed badly. Does the system make any attempt to isolate external air supply from the engine room? Is that even possible?

Did they really allow passengers to stay on board with the engine on fire?

Was there ever a report into the fire on 206 released?

Listening to BK on Morning Ireland earlier, he made no mention of the loco being uncoupled. He said that the fire services requested pax in the coach(es) closest to the loco to move coaches further up the train.

The only mention I saw of the loco being disconnected was on RTE & BBC websites, and looking at their wording, one report seemed more or less to be plagiarised from the other

The photos taken at lineside when the fire was out clearly show the loco still coupled to the rest of the set.

Irrespective, it looks like it was a nightware for those involved

What type of fire broke out and was it on the engine or a generator / elsewhere ?

What exactly what was burning - fuel or lub oil, electrical insulation material, drive belts or other ?

    Anyone know ?

What photos are you looking at all I can find shows the Loco and maybe one carriage but not the full set or is it impossible to break the set further back line side?

Correct - 227 worked a test run to Antrim and back with 2 standard, 1 diner & DVT 9001. First visit of a 201 Class in Antrim in quite a few years

Photos @ Antrim & Whiteabbey of the test -

2 standard 1 diner 1 DVT - that would be the fleet spares? Wonder what the point of that was, unless a run from Lisburn to Antrim is also on the cards to certify the diversion route?
