Starspangledbanner is going back to stud for a second attempt at a stallion career, with stem cell treatment to be used to cure his fertility problems. Raises some interesting issues, including what if horses with fertility problems will be passing on their faulty genes.

Rosemont owner Anthony Mithen said on the stud's website: "We will be trying some new fertility techniques that weren't available when Star last stood at stud. He is a little older and more mature and we take some real heart from the job that was done on Foreplay.

"Our bloodstock manager Dean Harvey oversaw the transformation of Foreplay from a sub-fertile stallion to a real commercial option, now batting at close to 80% fertility. Stem cell treatment really helped and from what we understand, Starspangledbanner and Foreplay's areas of concern are very similar.

I'd Say SSB fertility problems has more to do with the steroids the Aussies pump into their stock.

Surely Coolmore won't buy any more potential Australian stallions?

Sure Coolmore's Australian runners will be on the same steroids, recently bought Pierro and So You Think, i'd say they'll continue

SSB fertility issues have only come to light after Coolmore stumped up millions for So You Think.

I'd imagine they'll be more careful in future when parting with bags full of cash.

30 million for Pierro reportedly just a month or so ago

He was trained by Gai Waterhouse who Coolmore have a lot of horses with.

Presumably they would have had the inside line on that one.

Maybe I am overplaying it as all these potential stallions are insured against fertility so maybe they haven't lost that much on SSB.

Ryan Moore says of Ruler of the World that ''he thinks he will get further'', not a comment Coolmore would have wanted him to make

I thought it was more of a automatic comment he'd make after winning a middle distance race and a camera was shoved in his face, think it came out by mistake just another racing cliche.

What a start for Dandy man , he might just turn out a Royal Ascot winner too . 50% strike rate with 7 winners ans Fahey has a few decent one's. Parbold is his best I hear and will really like better ground than yesterday. I'd love to have a yearling going to the sales in September by him.

Well he got his Royal Ascot winner on the Windsor castle and second in the Coventry. I backed Extortionist the lad day but forgot about him as I was so disappointed Fine n Dandy was pulled out last night.

Havana Gold makes it 2 G1 winners for Teofilo this weekend

Is that his third group 1 winner, still a little disappointed. Good week for the Duke, zero stakes winners with his first crop of two year olds but they have trained on really well, six stakes winners as three year olds

Parish Hall (Dewhurst) and Loch Garman (Criterium) so 4 I think.
    But still not fantastic.

4 Group 1 winners from his first crop (albeit from a reasonably high fee) and people aren't impressed???

They should lay him out for the champion bumper at Cheltenham.

Two crops colonel, two of them as two year olds who did nothing after, Havana Gold probably not really a gr.1 performer. Think you need to look at gr.1s logically. Dubawi has a load of group 1 winners but when most of them are Italian gr.1s in still not taken a back

Were last years not his first lot? Sorry if not the case as I was discounting this years 2yos for the time being

Oldest is four, Parish Hall won the Dewhurst in that crop

Galileo sire of sires, that Jim Bolger sure knows how to pick them ( sometimes ). Not so sure that even New Approach will be able to keep his own momentum going.

It will be interesting to see whether the great Frankel can keep the run of successful Galileo sired Dewhurst winning stallions going.

Not sure tryfix have been very impressed with New Approach and think he is the biggest threat to Galileo. I'm on my phone, what's Pivotal's fee this year, having a shocker off the top of my head.

Pivotal standing for 45k sterling. Her been as high as 85k IIRC

Tanks Colonel, he gets some nice types but at that price you want a sire which can produce station's. Very few stallion sons of Pivotal are coming to me, Excellent Art, Mayson who else? Probably forgetting a dozen

2012 average yearling sales price was £141,741. The current fee doesn't look too off in light of that.

Farhh is his flag bearer this year - that will feed into this year's Pivotal yearling sales returns

Id still rate them on progeny performance on track as opposed to in the ring.

You'd be correct to IMO but the market & stallion owners will look at median returns.

Don't God Awful own a significant share in him too? If Sheikh Mo gets a hard on for your yearling you could hit the jackpot

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,335 ✭✭✭✭UrbanSea

I know there are two ways of looking st it Colonel. If Sea the Stars were to never sire a group 1 winner but they sold for three times his fee then he would be a success commercially but would quite clearly be a disappointment.

Not sure but wouldn't be surprised if they did. They are blessed to have New Approach their refusal to use the Northern Dancer bloodline has cost them big big time

There have been a few false dawns of new non-Coolmore potential super stallions. The likes of Pivotal, Invincible Spirit, Shamardal, Cape Cross, even Dansili and Oasis Dream have been a bit stop start and almost challenging Galileo some years only to fall back again. Having a few really excellent crops and individuals every year, but not guaranteed to dominate their rivals.

Dubawi looks promising, but not exciting and would seem to be a good source of Gp 1 winners without having the wherewithal to take a sires title. New Approach seems to have been boosted by his stamina laden stocks ability to stay 12f at Epsom. Bar the truly excellent Dawn Approach, his stock look a bit short of superstar material and possibly consistency. Unless he gets the mares to kick on from his excellent start, then he will settle into a role of potential classic winning producer when stamina is to the fore, but he won't have the constant stream of Gp1 winning 2yo's and multiple classic winning horses that would see him challenge for the title every year. There's just too much competition for the good mares, with all the other really attractive stallions around at the moment.
