Arcade & Retro Marketplace

    Hi folks,

Well we've gone & done it now. The trading forum is no more! Well, not quite. As you may or may not have seen it's been re-branded as the Arcade & Retro Marketplace. So what does this mean? Well, it's now our own marketplace...we're free to trade, swap & give away things as before...but with the addition of being able to sell items there too.

Sweet! There are a few provisos though, to make it safer & more comfortable to use. Have a read of the new charter, & the new Members Services thread, which can be a focal point for those of us who need any custom bits & pieces & physical help with repairs/projects etc.

So there we have it, a place to garner more retro goodies, in the comfort of our own forum. No bags of tayto, no half eaten mars bars offered, just sensible & honest stuff. Ciderman & Logie remain as mods & won't be taking any crap, so read the charter very carefully. The other two Cmods & I will also be watching over it to ensure it runs as planned, so don't arse around.

So happy buying folks, & if there's any questions use this thread :)

Awesome. That was my wishful thinking suspicion!

Be great to be able to buy and sell with members and postage should be less of an issue.

Excellent job to those involved even if it is years overdue. :D

As long as I'm still free to offer a half eaten packet of crisps and a copy of Rise of the Robots for Radiant Silvergun I'm happy.

Great stuff lads, well done on making it happen.

One suggestion I have is to make the charter that bit tighter by robbing rules from similar forums on the topics of price reductions (list them in both the new post and the original post, keeping the original price noted)?

So if a price reduction takes place, edit the op to reflect it as well as make a new post on a thread is it?

Actually are us non-mods allowed to edit the original post indefintely for things like price reductions or is there a time limit?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 33,733 ✭✭✭✭Myrddin

There is a time limit in which a user has to edit a post, only mods of that particular forum (Cidey & Logie) & the Cmods can edit posts beyond that. So I'd advise folks to be sure of your price before you set it, as you could end up having to ask a mod to change it after 24/48hours

Yeah, but keep the original price there.

That's made completely redundant by the time limit of editing posts so apologies for suggesting something impossible!

I think a, common sense approach is required.
So people should take care take the OP is right and they'll have editing time to do it that built into the system.
Also, I'd thank people not to create new ads constantly to keep their threads near the top, if it becomes an issue then it'll be entered into the rules and consequences defined.

Can we please ban the trading or sale of **** games like Halo, Rise of the robots and Zelda CD-i?

    Sure thing, done.

Usual 10% kickback to the mods still apply ?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,289 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

It works like the microsoft XBox One system, 45% goes to the games publisher, 45% goes to the mods, 10% goes to the seller.

Proper thread tags have no been implemented in the Marketplace, so if you're making a new thread, you'll see the options to use them [For Sale], [Trade], [Free] etc

It's not about putting up the wrong price, I was thinking more about an ad not getting any takers after a week or whatever - you'll normally see the original post being edited with a price reduction and a thread bump.

Presumably we can do this? By a PM to a mod if we can't edit it ourselves.

One thing I would say - folks should really include pictures especially for expensive items.

Yeah this editing restriction is a site-wide thing, outside of our control. Editing of a post over 24 hours old (I think it's 24 hours, maybe 48) will have to be requested by a mod yeah.

However, I'd nearly suggest anyone dropping a price just replies with a new post in the thread, that way it bumps the thread too. Then send a request to a mod to edit the op if they so wish it. Obviously excessive bumping won't be allowed, it needs to be fair. So we'll see how it goes, if its bumps galore then a restriction will have to be brought in at mods discretion.

I'd agree on using pics where possible too :)

Ok that's fair enough about posting a reply for price reductions, if a mod can also edit the OP at some stage too that would be great. Nothing worse than having to scan all posts for any possible reductions. Sure this might not be a big issue for a while yet, until it gets much busier which hopefully it will.

Aye, no pics = no parting of cash, too easy to have disputes over condition etc.

I think pics should be mandatory if the asking price is over a certain amount.

    Thoughts?

I suppose there's no real need to make it mandatory, it's in the sellers best interest to show pics. If they don't, they're less likely to sell. The 100 post limit should weed out most of the abusers right off the bat, so I suppose we just see how it goes. It'll be an on-going thing, & Cidey/Logie have the final say on it really

Agreed, there are many folk who like to throw up ads and say pics to follow later (you know who you are fish-shmup lover) but they should still be allowed place the ad. If folk don't bother with pics then it just might harm the attractiveness of the sale. I cba buying from pictureless ads but I could be in the minority.

/Edit: It would also be handy if the seller states the methods of payment they accept/prefer. Cash on collection, Paypal (Gift or buyer pays the fees) etc. All standard stuff really.

Yep, good idea. If folks could do this, & state their location, willing to post etc it would be good. I wonder should we use a generic template, & then let the seller elaborate on it underneath. Something like:
    Item: Boxed Sega Saturn
    Price: €150
    Location : Dublin
    Post: Willing to post
Payment: Cash on collection, or Paypal if posting (buyer pays fees)

Selling my boxed Saturn. It's in great condition, comes with an RGB scart cable, 2nd pad, & has been modded to be 60Hz selectable.

    Thoughts?

Ooh first dibs on your Saturn? :P :P

Ah as long as they cover the main points you listed it doesn't really matter about the format imo.

Los Lobos mentioned elsewhere about a Feeback thread or something, that would be handy down the road. Since there's no proper feedback system linked to the user (I think?) - just somewhere to post you had a good (sales) experience with so and so or this person is a cowboy, mad about Legend of Dragoon and sold me a bunch of CD-Rs, steer clear.

Anyway, maybe food for thought for the future. See how things go initially.

Yeah that link he posted didn't work, an invalid thread or something. It was also in the charter thread which generally isn't left open (I'd forgotten to lock it :o).

Any links to the thread he was referring to? We'd need to be pretty careful with how negative feedback was addressed, but as you said it's something to think about for future useage. Can't see too many negative cases given the users here at the mo

Was a link to atariage or something? Not familiar with that place tbh. AO and shmups have excellent Feedback systems but would still have to deal with neg feedback alright. Their system isn't going to be implemented on boards so a simple Feedback thread of sorts would have to do - not sure how to handle disputes. They normal happen on thread and/or showing PM's which is great fun for everyone else to read. Anyway, if folk are careful who they buy/sell from it should be fine in the main.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,183 ✭✭✭✭Atavan-Halen

I think regarding feedback, it'd be something to sort out between the seller and buyer but maybe just PM the mods to give them a heads up. i.e: "that retr0 fella sold me a used skirt when it was advertised as new" so that the mods can take appropriate action towards them. But after that refunds or whatever would be between seller and buyer.

    Yeah it was Atari Age.

Unless we created a thread for disputes, where users can post in? Keep it all in one place, suppose it might work. Not sure it'll be needed, & the mods would need to mull that one over.

As for publishing pm messages publicly, defo not :)

Here's the feedback thread over in Airsoft Adverts. Has been going years now and seems to work.

The problem is, for mods there's no way to know the complaint is valid or not & a system like that would be open to abuse. So it's prob best left between seller & buyer. For now, we're all pretty decent folks (retro notwithstanding of course) & I don't envisage any issues.

It's like buying from a car boot sale really, it's always buyer beware with private sales & here its no different. A feedback system would seem the logical go-between. Any thoughts on how such a system could work in thread format?

Thats very good, I like it. So ultimately if you're about to do a deal with someone, you use that thread & search for their username is it?
