UPS drive me up the wall with their VAT Handling Fee, what a scam. Always had positive dealings with An Post and DPD. Nightline have been hit and miss though they own Parcel Motel which is amazing.

Does anyone use XBMC? My parents have been using a machine I set up for them years ago to watch movies on, hooked up to the tv, but they keep forgetting which ones they have and haven't seen, so on and so forth, so I figured I'd get something a little bit easier for them - any suggestions on the simpliest, most straight forward xbmc skin for extreme novice users? Is it possible to boot straight into the movie folder? Does xbmc retain all info gathered online when offline? As in I'd have it connected online at my place, but it'd be offline at theirs, do it still keep all the cover/plot info? This would be a perfect skin if anyone knows what it is, and if its possible to boot directly into this screen?

I've been wanting to set up something like that from my parents for a while, but I haven't yet. AFAIK, XBMC will check video files as watched, as long as the file has been watched to completion.

Perhaps look into OUYA? Has the ability to play full HD videos, and has an XMBC app.
Thats what I'm planning on using one for.

Nah I already built them a dual core machine for purely HD video, so hardwise wise I'm sound, just looking for options to make XBMC as child-friendly as possible for them! :)

I use RDP to work on a box on my LAN, just started throwing a warning about its Cert being dud(bad authority). What would cause that to start?

big user of xbmc myself (openelec specificially)

trying to remember the name of the skin I use... im pretty certain its Quartz, but not 100%

As mentioned, you can typically set it mark things as watched, and even hide them (it considers items watched over 50% as 'watched' afaik). The watched icon is there by default (but by default is set off iirc), but the hide watched is prob skin specific

Not too sure if you can get it to boot directly into a certain menu item. I know with the skin I use, you can customise the layout of the home screen alot - so I removed a load of superflous stuff from it to streamline, and increase its GAF (girlfriend acceptance factor).

by default xbmc should cache everything alright - so should be fine with no net connection

Does anybody think we will see a slight drop in modo prices since VRM's ect are integrated onto the CPU's now ?

    blah..

have it in from of me now, so just to expand on this slightly

yep, Quartz skin is what I use - find it nice and clean, and not too fussy. Nicely configurable, without being over the top. Can hide weather, pictures, addons, and sub categories very easily etc

you can set the start screen to something other then 'home' but not 'movies' unfortunately. Probably best keeping at home though, as you can hold back/backspace to go back to home, and that sorta acts as 'root' of the system. Starting them at 'videos' and then hitting back accidentally, might get them confused (perhaps)
Settings > appearance > Startup window

attached a screenshot of my movies page. I have it sorted by 'date added', and you can see the little blue dot actually indicates if something is new rather then watched - but thats pretty skin dependant. I couldnt find where this setting was set, so could now be on and always on (or at least is the case for Quartz)
No coverflow option with Quartz sadly, though my htpc might struggle with it - so no biggy

gis a shout if theres any questions, or issues with it. I found the official forums pretty terrible, and the nature of xbmc (free, loadsa versions, installs on loadsa platforms, constantly updated/forked etc) makes searching up stuff very difficult..

    Thank ye postman. :)

    WXekoXql.jpg

That's the one from the BA a couple of days back. Apparently I managed to snag it before it got reduced to only including two free games. That said, I only got two games with it. (FC3 and Sleeping Dogs, oddly) but I've emailed Aria, and they're apparently going to send me codes for Bioshock and Tomb Raider, so all in all, win. :)

Yeah, especially when they cost so damn much. Hell if you want something expensive you can pick up a murderbox for that much.

I think you could get custom made "Iron maiden" case for that sort of money, which would be an AWESOME case.

It's a toughie. I paid 55 *cking euro for it (on Origin, FFS). Absolutely gorgeous game. But sh*t. Utter sh*t. I played through the campaign once, got worse and worse as it progressed. Multiplayer is very meh.

I think it's pretty good to be honest. If you like open world fps games it's one of the best.

It should be up for half price on origin soon enough.

    Watch out for the sales.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,752 ✭✭✭✭Headshot

I can get it for 25 euro on g2play but that is a tad high for me because of what crysis 2 was

I was thinking far cry 3 for some reason.

Crysis 3 looks amazing but it's a pretty run of the mill fps.

There are more open areas but it's still pretty linear.
