After listening to Marty Miller the other day when he played Duran Duran !!!!!! and Coldplay in the same hour, you'd have to ask.

At the risk of repeating myself(I know),why do we have to wait until Sunday evenings to get a really good show on Nova,Pat James plays some fabulous stuff, stuff I've not heard in ages.

I emailed them a while ago and asked them if they'd do a listener survey, still waiting on a reply...

Perhaps a Boards survey............although i dont think theres many Nova listeners on here......its funny that even though we listen to them, we all have the same complaints..........but still listen....we only have ourselves to blame..:o

We still listen because Phantom has gone to absolute sh1te and despite Nova's 20 'Best Of Album' playlist it's still the best music radio station we got. ;)

Nova was never going to be a hardcore rock station, it couldnt survive in such a competitive market broadcasting niche rock music, what has happened since it first went to air is it has softened its edges to appeal to a broader audience base, all the while tilting its cap in a 'rock' direction. As a result you will hear questionable 'rock' songs on the station including new music such as that one from The 1975 to enable the Nova to hook in more listeners. Personally I think Nova has an Rock identity, while its not the hardcore rock station some people wanted them to be , it is still more rock than the rest of the stations out there. I also think Nova will survive where Phantom, 4FM and sunshine will fall by the wayside when they eventually run out of money. The irony with Phantom , Sunshine and 4fm is they will probably run out of listeners before they run out of cash, where is this money coming from ??? Oh and before anyone tells me 4fm have gone up in cork, can i say .. BIG Deal, without Dublin where they have a lofty 1.6% after 4 years , they are doomed.

I disagree. Nova has the opportunity to play more than one popular album track per album. But they're playing it way too safe. Also, I don't know if they're trying to promote their 'personalities'. But the way things lie, there's only one person trying to promote himself, and that's Martie Miller. That's a bad thing. Cuz he sounds way too young to present on a rock station. They'll continue to do ok maybe for the next 12 months. But people will get annoyed with the repitition. It's boring.

His age has nothing to do with presenting, except if he was older he'd not put up with the stuff they "tell him" to play, but its his lack of knowledge , i could see him presenting country or jazz just as easily if it was needed.....like that Dooly one, they'll go where the job is...
    ...PJ on the other hand...;)

BTW...if one more dj says Leonard Skynrd.................

It's Marty's job to 'put up'with what he's told to play and say, same as everyone else in Nova ( and most other stations).

The days of presenters being able to choose what they play - except sometimes during specialist shows - are gone.

Even Marty saying his name is because he's told to, same as Greg, Pat and Dee are.

And in his particular defence, he has a great knowledge of and passion for rock music. but Nova's policy I guess requires the presenters not to make their input too esoteric.

I know loads of metalheads that listen to Nova because it's the radio station that gets closest to what they want. Ready made market. I wish they'd do a 80s classic rock/metal thing on a Saturday around 6pm. Miss the Rick Wakeman show then.

I agree , PDs and music directors tell you what to play and say and anyone who thinks otherwise has never worked in radio. Pat is an exception and I understand plays more or less what he wants. I'm surprised they don't throw a little more caution to the wind but that said, Nova are undoubtedly analyzing the day by segment ( possibly as little as ever 15 mins) and their output would be largely based on what analysis tells them. Do public know better, honestly no. Saw an interview recently with their CEO where he said they'd spent 800k on advertising - investors have to recoup and they do this by attracting what they consider to be max audience . To us it's music, to them it's an investment and that's how real world works in business

    All true and I agree.

I disagree that it's necessary, but I agree that it's currently true, sadly.

    Dont get me wrong,
    I listen to Nova 8am to 5pm.
Theres no other option but they need to play some metal at least once a day!
They (Pat "the cock" Courtenay) made a big deal over Metallica having the most albums in the top 50 best metal albums or something yet he only track they ever play is sandman!
Ive never even heard them mention slayer, pantera, megadeath etc never mind play them!

I presume there was no mention of Jeff Hanneman's passing so.

Rip, up there with a lot of other guitar greats.

About a year ago around 9 or so on a Saturday evening I was briefly listening into the request show. You ring in and ask for a song/artist and they play it for you. A guy had phoned in and was on live asking for the Metallica song unforgiven from the Blacl album. The DJ replied sorry I can't play that as somebody else rang in looking for (Yep you guessed it) Enter Sandman. He proceeded to play Enter Sandman and never mentioned who had rang in looking for it.

They have a play list which they have to stick to so when it comes to who they play eg ACDC etc they will only play certain songs by them. Their best show without a doubt is the Pat James show who I think is the best dj in Ireland and the second best show is Steve Downes who is on before Pat.

Nova in my view should be more like Planet Rock who have a playlist which is only restricted to what artist's they will play. No Duran Duran unlike Nova and the popiest stuff you will get will be Peter Gabriel mainly because of his Prog Rock routes. When an artist is on their play list any of their songs can be played. For example last Saturday afternoon I heard them play Cat scratch fever by Motorhead. On Nova that would only be played by Pat James as Nova seem to think Ace of spades is Motorhead.
