Lads. One of local fellas found out that eircom is rolling out Fibre optics internet in our area and it will be launched on 20th of next month. Stupid thing is I havent seen much of eircom vans doing work around here... shouldnt they be changing all the cables around this area? Or they only need to sort out exchange?

Not if they're only doing "Fibre to the cabinet" as they call it. You're limited to around 50Mb with that though.

Seems to be the case from what I've heard.

As I understand it your speeds after that depend on your distance from the cabinet.

No idea what temps are going to be like. I imagine with integrated VRM things might get a bit toasty. It probably will overclock a little better than Ivy, but I wouldn't be expecting miracles.

It's looking like an NCASE M1 for me at the moment. Depending on timing, I might dump my Haswell ITX build in a Prodigy for a little while (might have to sell off the current rig sooner) but I'm not 100% sure on anything yet. I also want to see what Corsair's ITX offering will look like. (though if their current schedule keeps up, it might be late Q3 before we see that)

If I were to PM you around June...

Maybe... It's actually not me, but my brother. Shouldn't be a problem though, assuming the randd place out in Shannon offer such a service to those doing work placement :)

Yup. I haven't looked into it at all TBH, so I don't know much more than that. I'm going to have to though. Moving back to my parents' place come June for at least a year, and at present, their only option is a blisteringly fast 4/4Mb down/up from Imagine, with horrible ping, and really inconsistent speeds. It's only €70 a month though.

Why can't UPC just be everywhere?!

@Gumbi: Excellent, many thanks good sir. :)

I have work placement in Intel over the summer so I should be able to avail of a 10% discount (or more) :P If Haswell overclocks really well this might make it a worthy upgrade over my 3570k.

What will you be getting upto at Intel ?

Im in IBM on work placement right now ..shame about the whole PowerPC thing :P

So technicly it should work? Stupid thing is, they tried putting 12mbit on my line and it pooped itself. So if they will just do the cabinet it will be feck all use to me anyway?

They're replacing the cabinets man, we're getting VDSL2 cabs put beside all the ADSL2 cabs, so there's a new theoretical max of 70mbps for now and >200mbps when vectoring is turned on.

Cab on the left is the old ADSL stuff, cab on the right is the VDSL cab: http://oi47.tinypic.com/r1zy1d.jpg

Still will be provided over your existing copper, but it'll be faster. See the table on this page for a rough estimate of the speed you'll get, replace the highest speed with 70mbps though.

If you want to give us a hand with the mapping of the new cabs, go here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056919149

Would I be running any kind of great risk by assembling my pc on a desk that's standing on a carpeted floor? And will touching the case/plugged in heater get rid of any static discharge? The only non painted part of my case is a screw will that do and will the psu have to be installed in order for that to work?

Touch a radiator and you're fine. If its a shaggy carpet dont move your feet a huge amount just in case.

If you look at linus and co you really can do anything and not have problems, ESD protection is mostly just paranoia.

Any free version of that? I can only see paid for version

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004VFJ9MK/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Its a year old in August. You could say its lucky that it started to go bad before the warranty was up

The only hassle is transferring files from the old to the new one

    edit

I just remembered I could clone the hard drive

There is no free version of SpinRite, but it's claimed to be the best hard drive repairing utility on the market by it's users.

This is why I love amazon

They are actually sending me a new hard drive and once I copied over the files from my faulty hard drive, I can send back the faulty hard drive to them

    Unreal customer care

Amazon is awesome. Plain and simple. If I can I always buy from Amazon. Just need to make sure you buy from Amazon and not from a third party seller though.

Would using a powerful card (7950) on an older motherboard (for my Phenom II) be hard on the motherboard? I notice one of the aluminium heatsinks on the motherboard (right in the middle, has MSI symbol on it) gets quite hot during normal usage, and very hot during gaming. (Perhaps it's s hot during both and I'm engaging in confirmation bias). Now I don't have a case fan running, but the case is open (on it's side) and CPU and GPU are kept very cool.

It's not a huge deal, I'm just wondering if it's normal really.

    Thanks! Here's a pic.

    Here's the heatsink in question.

Lads, how do I mount NFS shares in Windows 7 Home Premium? I've seen that some people say I need to turn on a Windows Feature called "Services for NFS" or something along those lines, but I can't find anything like that in the "Turn Windows features on or off" section of Control Panel.

That's the northbridge. It's pretty normal for them to get toasty but ideally you want some sort of airflow over the board to help cool this and the vrms near the cpu socket. Why do you have no case fans?

    I have a feeling a Phenom 2 may bottleneck a 7950 a little.

A little? :D At 2.8ghz it might do yeah :P

No case fans right now, temporary setup, case is on it's side. HWVS f*cked up my RMA, UPS picking up my motherboard tomorrow. Going to add 3/4 case fans to the order (won't be charged shipping).

Because I got sick of the RMA disaster (almost 5 weeks without a computer now), I went ahead and bought a Gigabyte Z77X-D3H motherboard (got a good price of 84 pounds on Flubit). I should have that tomorrow.

Apparently there is a single CPU 4 pin fan header + 3 3 pin headers (would that include the case fan 3 pin header? - I assume it does).
