How do you know the effects of a bomb?

I expect it is from it being described to you in a new report previously.

Just read a truly inspirational story about the man in the cowboy hat. His name is Carlos Arrendondo he pinched closed an artery on a victims leg. This poor guy has been through so much in his life . I don't want to post a link because the picture is graphic.

Imagine what had happened if those bombs had went off at the start line where everyone is stationed until the race is started!

    That is a scary thought.

I think this is too small time to be any major terrorist organisation. They would be embarrassed by how weak this was.
It's probably a Timothy McVeigh style domestic nut who is angry at the government

I wonder why they weren't. Is there tighter security at the start line?

Fox News are still confirming a twenty year old Saudi is being guarded in a hospital, they've even gone so far as to name him.
A source close to the investigation confirms to FoxNews.com the man whose apartment was searched is considered a person of interest in the case, and is the same person of interest Fox News confirmed earlier authorities are guarding at a local hospital.

The source confirmed to FoxNews.com that the person of interest is Abdul Rahman Ali Alharbi, a 20-year-old Saudi. His Facebook page identifies him as a current or former student at the New England School of English. He is believed to have entered the country on a student visa.

The source stressed that Alharbi is a person of interest, not a suspect, and said he suffered serious injuries in the explosion.

It was also reported by CBS and LA Times that it was Saudi national. But nothing really confirmed.

I assume if it were Al Q, AL Q would have taken public credit for it.

If it were a right wing militia they would usually take it out on a the government not a public marathon.

    This is him.

The poor guy should have been seen by a doctor as he seems to be in shock.

I'd agree with you. I would imagine the devastation/death toll would have been much greater if it had been a major terrorist organisation.

Put that bomb into an area with an amount of people like this..

No security at the start line of marathons, or anywhere really on the course that anyone would be aware of. They are just interested in getting the people with the right race numbers into the right starting areas so the start goes smoothly. But then the search required can be done by a visual glance as all anyone is wearing is a tshirt or vest and shorts, and all that is in their bags that they drop at the start to be driven to the finish will be a banana or two, a couple of energy gels and then a light running jacket and jogging bottoms to put on at the end to keep warm.

It will be interesting to see what extra security arrangements will be put in place for Sunday's London Marathon.

Not much they can do without cancelling it other than have more visible cops/ etc out on the street. London is already being under higher security due to the Thatcher funeral tomorrow anyway.

No changes notified yet from the organisers anyway, but I'll be making my way to the start a little bit earlier than I had previously planned just to account for slight extra delays in getting through train stations and into the start zones.

Why? Its totally ridiculous that they are making a connection. There was a headline on bbc about security in general at marathons & i couldn't help but think of the whistle theft episode of ted where the paper has a pull out special on whistles.

I just heard on radio that the Saudi suspect was apprehended by members of the public after the explosion because he was acting suspicious.

    It's not too small time.

Islamic terrorists aren't flown to Arab countries anymore to train. They're recruited by a (presumably) trained individual and left to their own devices.

Communication is minimal and so is any training they receive in bomb making. It's too risky to do it the old fashioned way. With limitations on purchasing large amounts of bomb making equipment since 9/11 this is more-or-less the style and size of attack to be expected from homegrown cells.

They're no longer the highly trained bomb manufacturers they used to be. They're about as skilled as anyone with an internet connection and access to basic materials.

At this stage you can't identify what type of attack it was (i.e. whether it's a lone-nut or something more sinister) based solely on the bombing itself.

Security measures are being reviewed, but it is definitely going ahead

Decent report from the guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/apr/16/boston-marathon-explosions-investigation?CMP=twt_gu

    It could go both ways.
    1. They've been brainwashed through American media into making a kneejerk reaction based upon ethnicity.

    2. The suspect was genuinely acting in a suspicious manner and they performed their civic duty.

That first one is still racism.

If I was a Saudi in america in the vicinity of a bombing I'd be acting 'suspiciously' as well, thinking "ah crap they are all going to think it was me"

It's racial profiling, which isn't the same as racism.

Exactly what I was thinking. The guy was probably bricking it whether he's involved or not.

watching documantaries. Actively seeing out information is one thing, putting pictues of bodies and injured people on the front of papers and websites is another.

Its multicultural Boston, not Hicksville USA; it's a smorgasboard of white, black, brown, yellow, African, European, Asian, mixtures of them all.

I doubt the crowd picked on the guy purely cause of his colour.
