What baffles me is the swastikas.

Also what is the obsession with people wanting to know if it is reported in national media outlets?

Well considering other things that have made the national news. It is sickening that something as horrible as grave desecration has not been reported than a few lines here and there. I understand not wanting to fuel these bástards and highlight their actions, but still.

Graves get desecrated everyday. Headstones vandalised, tributes stolen, obscenities scribbled in permanent marker, alcohol parties held on top of plots, saw it all during a summer job I had many moons ago. If someone of note has their grave desecrated it makes the local papers & that's it.

Could you imagine what would be said if someone went into Glasnevin and did it, or Westminister Abbey? Yes graves get desecrated often enough, especially ones in disused churches, but these people used an important week in the Republican calender, knowing there would be masses and meetings held in graveyards such as this. Meaning this is not just idiot youths, these people went out of their way to go around and find Tom Barry's grave too. They are some disgraceful human beings.

I would condemn grave desecration of high profile unionists coming up to mid July just as quick!

Most likely its not political, this happens very often, as I said, I used to clean 2-3 a week over the summer in a large & used graveyard, not an abandoned unit. It's nearly always done by teens, and while it wasn't a coincidence that those graves were desecrated, the fact swastikas etc were used would lead me to believe its stupid & ignorant teens looking to be hard men amongst their peers.

Tom Barry is located in a completely different area of the graveyard, and the week they chose. Anyone who thinks it was a random attack is in a serious denial. Youths wouldn't put that much effort in to "a bit of fun" sadly there are some, and often the likes of boards shows them and their thinking, that think the Republican movement is extreme right wing as opposed to left wing. Mis-education and revisionism has a lot to answer for.

I did say it wasn't coincidental, it wasn't fun either, but as for it being a concerted effort against the republican heroes of yore, no I don't think so, and you can roll your eyes as much as you wish

My eye rolling is in regards to calling extreme left extreme right. It is like saying black is white. ;)

There are theories going around at why it was done, but these so far are mere theories. Attacks to instigate anger particular political groups and the like, but as I say, mere theories. Few of which I would believe. I doubt the attack was on Tom Barry and Terence McSweeney personally, but it could be for what they stood for.

I made no mention of left or right wing. I just mentioned the desecration of the graves. The swastika (if that's was what you were referring to) was reported as being part of the desecration is what makes me think its teens, the racist "one fits all" symbol of the undeveloped mind.

Swastika is an extreme right symbol, republican is for the most part extreme left. I was not referring to your post, but to the idea of the symbols used in general. Yes the reference is accurate, one symbol fits all extreme beliefs as far as some are concerned, ergo the  :)

As I said, I doubt this is a direct attack on those buried there as people, but for what they stand for as a whole. The going out of the way to only attack those graves which are located in one area, then head to a completely different part of the graveyard, and find Tom Barry suggests to me it was not youths. Youths wouldn't be bothered going out of their way to go find another grave located elsewhere. There was a particular reason behind it and I for one am interested to find out what the hell it could possibly be.

And why would anyone regard these men as "terrorists"?

At first I thought is was done by a bunch of skangers who probably couldn't even spell the word "history" but now I'm not so sure.

Oh i think you know some people do.

The relatives of the people the IRA, old or new would not describe them as freedom fighters.

    Disgraceful act tbh.

Also pretty baffling, I don't get the swastika's at all.

Is it possible to vandalize a grave without desecrating it?

To interfere with anybody's final resting place is the ultimate disrespect. I don't care what political view points are in question, you never fcuk with a person's grave. Anyone who does is a complete plebiscite, the lowest common denominator.

We live in a country were paramedics and firemen get attacked while on duty. As a result I am saddened by this but not shocked or surprised.
