Graves vandalized and desecrated

The graves of Terence MacSwiney, Tomás Mac Curtain and Tom Barry (amongst others) at the republican plot (and a few just outside the plot) in St. Finbarr's Cemetery in Cork have been vandalized and desecrated over the last few days. There were swastikas and slurs written on the graves and headstones.

Members of Sinn Féin in Cork who regularily visit the graves to maintain and upkeep them were shocked when they discovered it.

It appears that the republican plot that was exclusively targeted.

Hopefully whoever is responsible is caught and held accountable for what they have done.

What the hell is this country coming to when people do this to the final resting places of our patriot dead?

Here is a source, I am assuming the national media will have something tomorrow on it, it is disgrace that there has been nothing yet.

    People are idiots...

Some of them will be along soon with gushing diatribes explaining why certain groups of dead folk deserve it.

They go by the name of Mega-Mong.

What? You despise our War dead now, was it you that desecrated the graves?!

    One wonders.

Really? Lets think about this, people who fought for the freedom of this country and its people deserve to have their graves vandalised because Shinners visit them despite the fact that they have no power over it. Hmm yeah that makes total sense.

I've just checked the news sites, why hasn't this been reported nationally?(yet)

That is what I am wondering, maybe the lack of coverage is an example and manifestation of the collective amnesia a lot of people seem to have about our history.

Ugh, very sad that someone felt the need to do that. I really don't know what they were trying to prove but it does sound like they targeted specific graves.

Then again I'm still stumped as to who and why someone vandalised the Tara standing stone. We certainly are home to some prize idiots

I assumed this would be a case of bronze plates being robbed for the scrap, it's happening a lot to war memorials. I doubt the people who did this understood what they were doing.

It is not, there were swastikas and slurs drawn on the headstones, this is more than a coincidence as this weekend is the commemoration of 1916.

    No they knew.
There were swastikas and slurs written on their graves and headstones in permanent marker.

There was a problem with graves being vandalised just over the road in St Joseph's cemetery recently. Probably the same bunch of gob****es that wouldn't history if it bit them in the bum.

They drew swastikas on them among other things.

    And this:
Workers’ Party Councillor Ted Tynan has condemned as “disgusting” a wholesale graffiti attack on headstones and other monuments at the Republican Plot at Cork's St. Finbarr’s Cemetery over the past few days.

Cllr. Tynan said that the attack was sickening, particularly coming just 48 hours or so before commemorations there of the Easter 1916 Rising. A large number of graves in the plot and a number of headstones of republicans outside the plot were found to be covered in graffiti including swastikas.

“This weekend, the 97th anniversary of the 1916 Rising will be remembered with pride and respect. To think that the men and women who sacrificed their lives for this country could be treated with such utter contempt is disgusting. The fact that only the graves in the Republican plot and of prominent republicans buried nearby have been covered with graffiti suggest that they were deliberately targeted”, said Cllr. Tynan.

He said that it was hoped the graffiti could be removed before Sunday’s Easter events which include the Workers’ Party commemoration at the Republican Plot which takes place at 12 noon.

I take it you are in agreement with desecration of graves then?

I wonder if it is not the desecration of the graves he agreed with, but rather the disagreeing that they are hero's of this country.
And maybe he is implying that karma has re-payed them this way for what they did 90 odd years ago. They desecrated Dublin and now their graves have been desecrated.

Albeit is is a VERY odd comment. The above is the only possible explanation I can think of.

This is the only place it is. It isn't on any media outlets as yet.

It is also being discussed here - ten odd posts and they are already at each others throats :eek:

This is interesting. It was swastikas and other stuff on the graves, which is a very specific type of vandalism. IRA graves were vandalised with fascist graffiti in Belfast 2009 by Combat 18. I wonder is there any connection, or connection with people with similar ideology.

-Tomás Mac Curtain was shot dead in front of his wife and children in his own home by the Royal Irish Constabulary .

-Terence MacSwiney died on hunger strike in protest of his illegal imprisonment by a British Military Court.

Both were Lord Mayors of Cork when they died.

I suggest you educate yourself more before you say something stupid again.
