I assume with an android phone, if you can get data, you can tether, regardless of whether the operator want/allow you to or not?

The type of phone is irrelevant, it's your service provider that allows teathering at a charge or free

In most cases, the operator just sees 'data' they have no idea if it's from a phone or a PC/Mac.

However, if your operator is forcing your tethering traffic through a different APN (a gateway address on their network) then they can distinguish and charge accordingly.

Apple iPhones will generally automatically setup the phone to whatever that carrier's default APN preferences are without revealing the details to the user. So, on networks that charge for tethering your tethering (wifi hotspot) traffic is fed through the APN that charges.

I think certain networks also apply similar policies to androids that they've sold with modified software.

Can anyone tell me if the callcosts.ie website will still do an accurate comparison of all providers to tell you which one suits you best? Are these new service providers taken account of? My 24 month contract with 02 is up soon and I am actively looking to get a better deal elsewhere!

It will not. How many minutes and texts do you use a month roughly. Do you use data and if so how, (browsing, video, downloading apps, tethering to a pc)

How can they tell whether I'm using data by opening the browser on the phone, or trasmitting the data to be used via a pc? I'm talking wifi tethering here, although maybe it doesn't make a difference if it's wifi or connected via usb?

Groom saying yes above signifies they can't really tell?

Not sure mate, but if you're happy with the 02 coverage, go with Tesco. Same network. I was with 02 for years, changed to Tesco months ago and have saved a fortune! I have 300 mins & texts and 500gb data (tethering allowed) for €20. I never use it all. All family changed as well, so free calls to them, happy dayssmile.png
