Jesus Christ ... how come mobile rates in Ireland are so cheap ..... getting raped here in the Netherlands and Germany by T-Mobile, Vodafone, KPN, O2 etc :(:(:(:(

Competition ! The Irish mobile sector's actually pretty seriously competitive and ComReg got the switching policies right. It takes about 3 to 15 mins to switch networks in Ireland, vs quite cumbersome processes in other countries that tend to take up to a week in some cases.

If we could get the landline sector into the same kind of mode, especially for broadband it would be great.

Ireland's definitely ahead on mobile data too compared to quite a few places I've lived. The mobile networks here seem to offer cheaper, faster data with much bigger allowances and far fewer restrictions.

These were the cheapest prepay I could find in Belgium, and they've just recently come to the netherlands too : https://mobilevikings.com/nld/en/

Check out the dutch MVNOs too : http://www.prepaidmvno.com/mvno-companies/eu-mvno-companies/nl-mvno-companies/ You might find far better offers than the main networks.

The links on that page don't work but just google the names one by one until you find a decent operator!

Still expensive, but maybe better than some of the others in NL.

    ----

I'm on the Tesco SIM-only €35 for a few months and it's a great setup.
The data's capped at 2mbit/s at the moment, but it's definitely reliably 2mbit/s and seems fine for spotify and youtube etc.

    Other big positives:

    1) Very cheap international calls (1 or 2 cent per min to most places (landlines and landlines/mobiles in the US/Canada as they don't distinguish).

    2) Visual voicemail using Hullomail's totally free.

Yes, if purchasing online you can either

    1. Purchase the Pay Monthly plan first and then port after or
    2. Get a PAYG SIM and port onto that and then purchase the Pay Monthly plan as an existing customer

48 Months has unlimited mobile and text for €20, just 50 mins landlines and 3Gb data though: http://www.48months.ie/membership/the-don

Mobile Data with 48 is capped at 1Mbps. Lets not forget this.
It is a great offer, but if you are a speed freak, or in any way a serious smartphone user, this will be a pain in the backside.

Looking into getting a good deal for my mam, so to compare:

    €35 - Tesco - Ultd calls/texts 15gb data (2mbps cap), cheap out of package calls - o2 coverage
€32 - Emobile - Ultd calls/texts 15gb data (unknown cap, if any), meteor coverage (bad?) and bad customer service
€29 -(or €20 online with €11 spare for out of bundle calls?) - Lyca - Ultd calls/texts/data (unknown cap, if any) - o2 coverage? Don't know of customer service or anything else about company. Are they reliable will they be long lasting, trustworthy, reliable?
    €20 - 48 - Ultd mobile calls/texts - 50 landline minutes, 3gb data (1mbps cap) - o2 coverage

Does anyone know, if you signed up to one of the deals on the o2 network, would others who have "free o2 texts" still be able to text for free or would it be seen as different if not actually with o2?

What would be the easiest for a non technical mammy to sign up for, no surprises, no issues, you just pay and you're away (for example, having to top up online with lyca could be an issue).

Also, are there any similar usage deals but entering a contract that will get you a free android smart phone?

Meteor coverage isn't bad anywhere I've been which is normally Dublin but don't remember it being bad anywhere. Data speeds are great. Gettting 6Mps up, 1Mps on HSPRA+

The beauty of all the above contract free plans is that you aren't stuck with the network for very long. If they are rubbish you can be done with them in a couple of hours.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,859 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Are they not all 30 day contracts? Still very short of course, but not a few hours? :)

Would be nice to get the same kind of deal PLUS a free phone if any of the networks wanted you for 12/18/24 months and were reliable enough to go with?

You end up paying a minimum of 1 month but you can be ported in hours if you really had to

    Yeah cool,

So Lyca seems the best price wise, just something tells me not to go with them for some reason?

Is your mam a big phone user? If not then the Tesco PAYG €25 offer might be worth considering with the option of moving to a contract after that offer is up. Worth trying out that one first before diving into a contract straight away. There is free unlimited texts with that offer as well.

Yes it is seen as a diffrent network so it won't work.

Yeah she'd be a heavy enough caller and texter alright so I think something where she knew spending x amount would give her unltd use would be pretty good for her, it'd keep the landline bill down too probably. Problem is, she needs a new phone and I was hoping there'd be a contract she could get into where she'd be spending the money anyway, but would get a free phone by just agreeing to spend it with the same company for 12/18 months :)

In that case a contract would be appropriate. But why is she retaining the landline if she had a mobile on contract? Eliminating the line rental costs on that alone would go a long way towards the monthly mobile contract costs.

Hmmm, haven't had such good experiences with three and I hear their customer service is still pretty shocking. What's the coverage like?

I was with 3 before going over to Tesco. Coverage is absolutely fine, they also have the NBS contract so they have extra cover in rural areas, and they never seemed to suffer from the occasional outages that afflict o2 and vodafone. Customer Service is a bummer though.

But don't let that turn you off. Yes the customer care isn't as lovely and simple as others, but it works. If you've issues, you've got the stores, but you can also get things done with the customer care team. I think persistence and knowing that you are dealing with a call centre is key.

Just set aside the foreign call centre and get on with it. Even O2 is moving there, gradually. They've already started .

I'm currently on the €20 with Three - the data is what really does it for me. I'm a big user of Gmail and Spotify.

Would the Tesco speeds be comparable to what I have, considering I'm mostly in Dublin city centre? Deal seems great, but it'd take good Internet connection to seal it for me.

Well what speeds are you currently getting?

So with the three €20 a month top up, you pretty much get everything included in that for one month, and then you have €20 to go towards international calls, 1890's etc, is that how it works? Only downside is if you forget to top up after a month, you could use up all your credit in a few minutes if you end up watching something on youtube! It happened me :o

Hang on. The 3 €20 top-up offer only includes weekend calls free. So not comparable.

You're correct. It's free any network texts, free 3-to-3 calls/texts, and free any network weekend calls.

I actually can't check my speed because I've got a rubbish old Nokia until my new phone arrives. I'm mostly in Dublin city centre though. I'm going to find out on Monday if the Tesco deal is contracted - if not, I think I'll switch.

The Tesco data speeds aren't wonderful, but they "do".

I'm considering EMobile at the moment because their data rates are way better.

That being said, it's still doing faster uploads than my "up to 24mbit" smart telecom line (4km line length, 2km walking distance) to the exchange :

Tesco allow you to Tether, none of the others allow that for that price.
I got one of these Link and plugged my old eircom phone into it. So now I have home phone + internet for €35 pm. Brilliant deal

Will be interested to see what deal Tesco have on offer when I am out of my 24 month contract with 3 in June. If I switched to Tesco, how can I be sure the iPhone I got on the 3 deal 2 years ago will work with the sim?

Once your current contract is complete you will have to contact your current provider to supply you with your unlocking code (usually takes a few days) and then you can move your iphone to any other provider

I have been on the three offer for about 18 months now and have always been tethering. They don't try and stop you!

Also, when I signed up, they were also running another offer which gets me an extra €10 credit per month.

So altogether for €20 I get: €30 credit to use, All you can eat data (With tethering ;) ), Unlimited 3-to-3 calls, Unlimited any network texts, Unlimited any network calls.

Three's call coverage is grand, they piggyback on the Vodafone network so can be gotten anywhere there's a vodafone signal. Data can be a bit of a nightmare outside of towns and citys. I would advise against three if you live in a rural area.

I assume with an android phone, if you can get data, you can tether, regardless of whether the operator want/allow you to or not?
