There are a few exceptions, Aliens and Aliens Vs Predator on arcade hardware, Comix Zone, Knights of the Round, Armored Warriors, Batman Returns... ok, maybe more than a few exceptions, but the reason they are good is that there is always something interesting to looks forward to on the next screen or level.
Final Fight, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Altered Beast, TMNT, Simpsons, all I find mind numbing, only the XMen is almost not dung, and that's because of an interest in the subject matter.

But, hey, it's only like my opinion.

Don't want to be pedantic or anything but my beloved Aliens is certainly not a scrolling beat 'em up, you do walk left to right but that's about all it has in common. Great game it is.

Regarding scrolling beat 'em ups - never overly fond of them myself but still a decent genre. Playing Final Fight in the arcades was good fun.

You are, of course, right, and I stand corrected....
I don't think my dislike of the genre is anything new, given that it's something that comes up a lot!
    But each to his/her/it's own.
I used to play Aliens in the Dundrum Bowl a long long time ago, before Quazar, back in 89/90, a group of us from college would bunk off and head down there on the bus, was a blast!

And, yes, I do like Halo, and lacklustre FPS on the PS2.......

Should I beware the Ides of March?
    Will there be a coup?
Do I have to look out for daggers and my imminent replacement?

Thing is, there's a huge variety between scrolling beat em ups. Alien Versus Predator plays more like a Capcom fighter. Try playing as Linn, she has a huge bunch of moves.

Then there are other amazing Capcom ones like The Punisher, Battle Circuit, Dungeons and Dragons...have you ever played IGS PGM beat em ups like Nights of Valour 2 Nine Dragons and The Gladiator?

The good games in the genre have loads of combos, interesting upgrades and beautiful animation. You don't just walk right pressing one button, you have to get combos and play smart like in a fighter.

How about Guardian Heroes? Fantastic game once you start to explore it a bit.

Others (like some of the bad ones you've mentioned) hand have crap animation, no depth and were just thrown together.

It's like any other genre. To cast it all aside saying pretty much that it's all rubbish is a bit silly to be honest. The only genre you should do that with are football management games :D

My favourite arcade game by some margin. Massive nostalgia factor for me also.

All that waffle you spouted about AvP being a deep game was just erradicated by the above statement! You've obviously never played the brilliance that is Football Director on the C64. Skip to 45s for 'gameplay' footage:

Could never understand how the younger brother could get addicted to it.

The quality of the gameplay, that's incredible! I revoke my previous statement :pac:

Seriously, just open up Excel, it's more fun!

Just the same as being a shmup doesn't necessarily mean a game is any good...being a scrolling beat em up doesn't necessarily mean a game is bad. Each to their own for sure, but damning a whle genre based on certain examples of it only mean you lose out by never playing the good ones :)

Those Dungeons and Dragons games are coming to PSN and XBLA. A glorious mix of belt scroller and RPG-lite.

Kat Bailey is leaving joystiq and moving to a job with EA :( I think that completes the loss of every games journalist who I trusted in one month. She was by far the best journalist around when it came to RPGs and a fellow crusader against Legend of Dragoon. At least jeremy parish at IGN is still writing about obscure stuff.

Massive Loss. She was one of the few reasonable sounding voices in the games press.

Also FEZ is coming out for PC in may. What was the verdict on this? From looking at it seems like it could have gone either way.

I had a Spectrum back in the day, I never owned this but someone gave a neighbour a copy.
This kid was not a friend of mine, and a year or to older.
So, suddenly, he was in my house regularly for a fortnight, playing this bloody Football Manager game, Kevin Toms was the author afaik.
And, yup, looked like a dry table of stats to me too, but to football fans it translated into bliss.

    Poor b@stards

He finally got the message and never darkened my door again to play the game and I think I have had about 5 sentences with him since, some 30 years later.

My spiritual arcade home. That was the arcade where I cut my teeth on street fighter and mortal kombat from 1991-93, although I was only doing my junior cert at that stage, so you've a few years on me. It was a great spot, there was always a buzz going on around the fighter cabs and the pool tables. I spent all my confirmation money on quasar :-)

Shame it's gone to arcade heaven now. It was built on the same flood plane that made a mess of the Dundrum shopping centre a couple of years ago. There's a long history of businesses on that site going under (literally). It was all below ground level, and flooded in the mid 90's after a big storm and never re-opened.

Divorcing the game itself from the persona of the creator, we're left with a really interesting game that's probably not quite there but offers a lot to enjoy and appreciate. The core game itself is fun and beautifully presented, although there are times the gameplay and level design don't seem quite as rich as they could be. Your mileage will depend on how engaged you are by the truly cryptic, in-depth puzzles that open up post completion of the main story. You'll need to physically take reams of notes to figure some of them out. This does raise the concern that a lot of the puzzles are tied to old school code cracking than the gameplay mechanics themselves, but I have to admit I enjoyed my time with it (although didn't finish up a handful of the more time consuming exercises).

Yes, it's true: Valve announced today that Team Fortress 2 will have a new "VR Mode" that supports the Oculus Rift, available this week!

Oculus Rift dev kits have been finalized, here's what they look like. Feckin beautiful package! Great little video about half way down.

I think they're going to be shipping soon. So I should have one to play with over the next couple of months. Going to be a must for a beers I think.

That kit looks class, very nice!

Didn't realise before that the goggles have a fixed resolution of 1280 x 800 - he's saying with the bigger screen the image won't look as sharp, is that right? Bit weird sending developers a temporary screen size that won't be what the consumer gets.

Will be great to see what games get developed or optimised for it though.

Tried installing the latest Flash update on Firefox...YouTube videos won't play. I've been holding this off for this reason for the longest time, but when it said that I needed to install the latest version for security reasons, I didn't really have much choice. And yet this problem continues. I've tried everything I could, and yet I still can't get it to work. So...any help?

Also, forgot to mention, but this seems to be a Firefox only issue. On Chrome, I have no problem watching videos.

Had something similar happen at work where firefox wouldn't read pdf's properly after the last update so I had to change the applications action in tool>options>applications.

Cant seem to see any flash options though but I haven't looked that closely.

I'm currently on 19.0.2. It is of no help.

Also, I just realised something...Super Metroid's release date is the same day as my birthday...and it's my b-day today.

Is it not implied in my username?

And yes, I managed to fix the problem. All I needed to do was to update RealPlayer.
