I'd say that the OP won't get his money back as there's probably no evidence that he didn't get the cash, but it might tip off the owner that something out of the ordinary is going on.
look I got ripped off my dole last wk, and am afraid to mention the €50 I'm case girl loses job so be more vigilant next time. truth is, ruudi too nice
She shortchanged you, and you're worried about her losing her job? If that happened me I'd be in pointing out that they should fire her and hire me instead.

Someone who works with these machines needs to clear this up.

    I nominate Rossa.

It's entirely dependent on the software to which the PIN machine is connected but yes, it's a common feature of POS software to automatically set overpayments as tip or change.

It's highly unlikely that a bar employee would deliberately enter a huge tip on a small bill in an empty bar in the early evening paid by card. Not only would he/she depend on the customer not noticing but also on the boss actually paying the tip forward once the accounts are settled at the end of the period.

Bearing in mind what you've said in your first paragraph then I agree that it's unlikely to have been an attempt at fraud. I wouldn't rule it out though, some people are incredibly ballsy.

I have to say I'm stumped as to why these POS machines would be set up to allow such a thing to happen. Big flaw IMO, if the POS has the bill itemised, why the need to enter the total in the first place? That just doesn't make sense.

Essentially what you're saying happens is: The POS unit has the itemised bill and thus the total owed. The employee then enters the total amount anyway and if he/she puts in too much it automatically goes down as a tip!

Very often the card machine is separate from the POS requiring the amount to be input in the device.

The POS totals everything up and the staff enter it on the keypad.

Tipping is not usually considered part of the turnover of a business so it is applied separately from the POS, otherwise it will be part of the daily count. Cash back is also part of the daily takings and shows as a conversion from cash to card on the till reports so it is generally done on the POS.

Remember to enter €30 on the pad requires the 3, 0, 0, 0 to be pressed, 4 extra beeps unless the setup automatically tallys overpayments as tips in this particular establishment.

    Pressed 4 by mistake.

    /thread.
    So it's the barman's fault!
    Money back so!

It has to allow for the customer to receive change or leave a tip but I agree if it doesn't request confirmation from the user it's very sloppy.

What are you talking about  I thought it was €30, not €50. Did this happen for real op or just in your imagination?

The OP called in to the place yesterday evening. I don't want to jump to any conclusions, but are we safe in assuming he is dead, and we should notify the guards?

I was just going over my online banking when I spotted a £41.00 charge in a certain drinking establishment. This didn't ring a bell as all I remember getting was two glasses of wine.

So I look in my wallet and I happen to still have both the itemised receipt and the debit reciept. Right enough the debit reciept says £41.00... as does the itemised reciept, which reads as follows:

the reciept says "you have been served by: ROSSA"

There is no way in hell I tipped them 30 bucks! the dirty fecker plugged in his own tip before I punched in my pin code! I only copped it now a week later!

Am I right to march in there and demand my money back?[/QUOT

30 tip feck no!!!!! sure it wasn't total 11 for the 2 drinks adding cash-back 30 making it 41 total on the receipt maybe it was a mistaken cash back you didn't ask for and the person who type it on the computer gave nothing back because the person knew they mucked up on the til OR they rip you off by taken it as a so called tip which noone would never tip a place that amount .

I got a "promotional" half pint of wine for €10 in Dicky French's in Drogheda... turns out that's not particular good value at all at all

Ah, I'd say he went in, spoke to the manager and as an apology the manager allowed him to drink the place dry. HE's probably still in there, on the whiskey and shots.

Manager probably said, free drinks but one condition
    "Don't go national with this"

I'd say he chickened out. Probably went back in to speak to Rossa who turned out to be a 6ft brick shíthouse and ordered another glass of wine followed by soul crushing shame as he checked the bill going out the door.

the last machine of this kind that I worked with (also in a pub) follows this procedure..

    enter amount due ........
    sure? press ok/cancel
    press enter button
    add tip .......
    sure? press ok/cancel
    enter pin
your card will be debited £$£$£$ ok/cancel
    processing...

any card machine Ive seen looks to be the same format, so this Rossa character must be running a scam (in my opinion) though its a very risky one.
