I was just going over my online banking when I spotted a £41.00 charge in a certain drinking establishment. This didn't ring a bell as all I remember getting was two glasses of wine.

So I look in my wallet and I happen to still have both the itemised receipt and the debit reciept. Right enough the debit reciept says £41.00... as does the itemised reciept, which reads as follows:
    1 GL FARN PINOT £5.25
    1 GL RIOJA £5.75

    TOTAL £11.00

    Settled by:

    VISA £41.00
    TIP £30.00

the reciept says "you have been served by: ROSSA"

There is no way in hell I tipped them 30 bucks! the dirty fecker plugged in his own tip before I punched in my pin code! I only copped it now a week later!

Am I right to march in there and demand my money back?

Did you not check the amount before entering your PIN?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,968 ✭✭✭✭Praetorian Saighdiuir

    Yes.

If you did not tip by £30, he essentially stole from you. Break his face.

    of course march back there!

(also the name rossa immediately reminded me of this :L http://2.gvt0.com/vi/8RSz52ravlI/default.jpg )

No I mustn't have. I wasn't even drinking yet at that stage so it's not even down to me being drunk. My gf had just arrived so I was a bit distracted

May have been a genuine mistake on their side too. I would rock back in and speak to the manager, I wouldn't be getting cross over it though.

Why thank you.. your sarcasm is endearing!

I simply mean it's one of those things I always do when using chip-and-pin for this exact reason.

As to the OP's problem in hand - you've every right to back in and inform the manager.

I'd ring them and arrange a time to speak with the manager, saves you going in and getting the brush off that the manager is on their break, off sick, on holidays etc.

And absolutely I'd be demanding a refund.

Start a Facebook campaign that blows things wildly out of proportion.

I would contact the manager/owner of the premises. Bring the receipt and also a photocopy of the receipt (they might ask for the receipt but only give them the copy). If this was an error they should be quick to refund. If this was a scam the I would expect it happened to a few people and the manager would have had other complaints and will refund you.

Pin number doesn't even have a 4 or a 1 in there so it wasn't a typo on my part.

maybe the bar tender hit 41 instead of 11 by accident?... possible... ?

I'll hold on to this until I see how easy they are about reimbursing me. ;)

AFAIK, usually the tip is entered separately on these, especially if it gets printed on the receipt.
If it's hand written on the receipt then the whole amount is usually entered at once.

It seems unlikely that somebody would do this deliberately and then hand you evidence of their theft.

Could be an honest mistake, not sure how it would happen though! Let us know how you get on!

This happened to me before in the Wright Venue.
(hate the place personally, was there for a birthday party)

Luckily I noticed the debit amount on the card machine before I typed my pin and said it to the barman.
He acted all apologetic and gave me the cash back, even though I hadn't asked for cash back.... Poxy chancer!

If the drinks were 11e and you were charged 41 it's entirely plausible that you got 30 cash back and he put it as a tip accidentally on the machine. His till would still balance at the end of the night. It's your own fault really for entering your pin code when he presented the machine to you with 41e

I think what Squirt meant is that there'd be no way of proving that OP 'didn't' get £30 cashback.

Bartender could have done the exact same transaction as 'if' OP did get £30 cashback but just pocketed the cash.

Hard to prove unless there have been more complaints and/or CCTV...

tough position to be in. Hard to prove one way or 't other.

Would ya go on out of that.

As bad as the judges are in this country for screwing things up, I don't think any of them would buy such a string of excuses.

Our friend Rosso is a cheating little git who is about to get found out and. I hope there's a full investigation and we find out how many other customers he is ripping off.

It might be possible if the OP had got 2-3 drinks and was one of the many customers that throw away their receipt, once they spot this then they could act, knowing the receipt was going to be binned,

if it was done in bad taste, it seems the tender has a lot of outs unless there are multiple complaints, a lot of people do not even check their bank statements, if the bottom line looks about right they never check it.

Just get the €30 back and accept that it could have been a legitimate mistake but recommend they check all transactions for high tips.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,462 ✭✭✭✭WoollyRedHat

Walk back in, hold the place up with a gun, and tell him to empty the cash register until you get your 30 back and maybe some more considered the emotional distress caused by this.

If it comes to a court appearance, and it shouldn't if you do it right and have a getaway driver outside, then just show him the receipt and all will be well.

Disclaimer: This is simply the quickest way to retrieving your money, possibly not the most orthodox. Any unforseen events arising form the hold-up cannot be blamed on me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 346 ✭✭dorkacle

I don't really know what the OP can do tbh.

Either way, if it was an accident or if he did get ripped off there isn't anyway to really prove if he got the money or not. Particularly because its a couple of days after the transaction.

In the case of it being an accident, in a retail setting where something like this would happen they would count the till to see if its over the debited amount, or when the till was counted at the end of the night it may have been noted it was of by €30.
But if the cashier pocketed the money its your word against theirs really. :(

And unless its been a regular complaint I can't see the manager handing out a refund very easily tbh. Who's to say you didn't get cash back and just dropped it or even spent it...? You'd be surprised how many people actually chance this when they have received their money!

I would definitely go in and have your complaint on record, and maybe leave your details in the hope there are more similar complaints, but I wouldn't expect a straight refund on the spot tbh.

I'd say that the £30 tip was prob just a mistake. The waiter might have meant to enter £3 instead. But then again, could have been a rip-off merchant. Best of luck getting your money back OP.

Reminds me of some thing from the Burns and Allen show, old US comedy show... main character Gracie talking about the bank

"It's dishonest. I was there yesterday to make a deposit and as fast as I put money in one window, somebody was taking it out of another."

€30 or €3, the waiter shouldn't be entering in his own tip at all as far as I am concerned!

Who the feck tips 30 euro for an 11 euro drink order?

    Tipping of overe 300%?

Even if the manager won't give you the money back, you should totally bring this up.

The manager will at least then know that this Rossa person made a serious mistake or he stole from you.

Most businesses that Ive seen now get the customer to sign for any cash back requested. This keeps both the staff and customer honest. Not doing this leaves room for much debate firstly on whether a costumer actually requested cash back at all and secondly whether they received it.
