V interested in this, seems to be some money to be saved, can this be done to any petrol car or does it have to be a specific model,

Can it be done for 1.4 patrols?

    There's another calculator here - http://www.autogasireland.ie/about.html

If those figures (even when conservatively estimated) are correct I really should get my car converted...

.....just an update on the brother's Saab - he came up to Galway for the w/end, so I got to drive it a bit.

    Some thoughts:
    1. Performance: Zero difference that I could tell between driving it on LPG or petrol. Even switching over on the move, I couldn't tell. For me, that makes them at least equal.
    2. Economy: filled it in Loughrea, after arriving from Cork, and it averaged 24.8mpg. Call it 25. It does 27 on petrol, so it does about 8% less distance on a 'gallon' of LPG. But the price of LPG fuel (in Loughrea) meant it was 40% cheaper than petrol ! (99.9c/litre - in Cork he's getting it for 79c/litre in one place !!  )
    3. Technical: didn't like cold starting on gas, so I reckon he needs to go back after a few miles and get it recalibrated/tweaked.

Other than that, I'm struggling to understand why ANY of us are using petrol at all !!

Does anyone knows could WAG TSI engines (1.4TSI 140hp, DSG) could be converted to LPG? i know it require different type of equipment and mainland Europe is practising this conversion but not sure about Ireland,

Yes the TSI can be converted but as they are a direct injected engine the kits are very expensive.

I e-mailed lpg.ie and they said the kits for those engines is 3000 Euro's

So if you were spending 80 a week on petrol and after conversion you were spending 45 it would take 85 weeks to pay back.

You would want to be keeping the car a long time to make it worth while.

Where as if you convert using the standard kits costing 1000 Euro's and spending 60 a week on petrol, on LPG at 80 c litre you would probably spend 35 a week taking into account inefficiencies, the pay back only taking 40 weeks in total.

It would be better to convert a 6 Cylinder BMW at that rate, probably 1500 Euro's.

The VAG petrols are not the most reliable anyway so in the end you could be spending a fortune on those cars, especially the 1.4 TSI engines super charged ones.

I think Fiat's T-jet is direct injected also, but a far more reliable engine.

Most engines today are afaik are direct injected.

Special offer running at the moment in LP gain
Book your car this week and receive

€100 OFF or 200 litres autogas

    voucher free worth €170.

    Minimum deposit €50

I have calculated that at a 25% reduction in my fuel bill, I would save €150 per month...

Conversion would be paid for in less than 7 months.

Regarding the LPG side of things, how much would the servicing costs per year be?

No difference in servicing for the engine. In fact, gas engines are known for keeping their engine oil cleaner - ditto spark plugs.

The LPG system needs filters replaced, don't know if anything else needs doing ?

But can someone say what the actual cost is ?

Check code of your engine here
If it's on the list you would convert this car probably much, much cheaper than 3000 euros.
I think there are distributors and conversion garages in Ireland

    I didn't see the price ?

So 3000 is a rip off then ?

Quote for GTI conversion because it's direct injection.

Quote for GTI conversion because it's direct injection.

I spoke to guys who converts cars using STAG and Prince systems in Dublin. Price for engine with direct injection about 300-400 euros more than price with normal injection. The problem is each direct injection engine needs autogas KIT dedicated only to this engine...

Here is the installation manual for the Stag 400 DPI

    http://www.ac.com.pl/public/pubonline/cms/files/Programy-i-instrukcje-obslugi/stag400dpi/angielski/STAG_400_DPI_manual.pdf

It seems to still work the traditional way, ie indirect LPG vapour, rather than liquid LPG directly into the cylinder

I have a 2.5T volvo with a thirsty petrol engine and really considering either getting rid of it or converting but main problem is where are the gaz filling points located.

Like most people who really need this im to far away from a lpg filling station. 50km. Can you install a LPG tank in your home and get it filled every few months and has anyone done this

    It can be done.

What you need is a home fill kit, it will cost around €2-3000 to install plus a yearly safety check. Its basically a fork-lift filling station.

You also need to pay an extra 10c/litre for duty on the fuel for road use.
