    Do you bother with it?
Is it an excuse to eat pancakes and more of a cultural tradition then a religions one; like Fat Tuesday?
Or another christian tradition you've no time for?

    Ahem, to clarify:

I <3 pancakes. I had some for breakfast this morning. Pancake Tuesday is just another excuse to eat pancakes. Religion no longer has anything to do with it.

Wasn't it a way of getting rid of all the tempting stuff before lent began? So in a roundabout way its got links to religion but feck that, I am having my pancakes on Tuesday :D

Pancake tuesday IS Fat tuesday AKA Mardi gras.
How can the last day before lent be anything but religious?

    Religious culture.

I use it as an excuse to eat pancakes, just like how I use xmas day as an excuse to crack open the first beer of the day at 10am and get away with it.

I think most people have lost sight of the true meaning of the day

Pancake Tuesday is actually about remembering St. Pancake who was martyred in 100AD when he was coated in batter, fried and lightly drizzled with maple syrup by the Romans.

I for one will continue to honour St. Pancake by frying small effigies of him and consuming them, then by the magic of transubstantiation they will be transformed into the tasty flesh of St. Pancake himself.

You forgot to mention he was whisked away before being beaten to death by them, but otherwise historically accurate and well said.

The only problem I have with Pancake Tuesday is that it doesn't happen enough. Every Tuesday should be Pancake Tuesday, the world would be a happier place, and there would be less fighting and stuff.

I don't like pancakes. I think they taste crepe.

    :pac:

    I'll get me coat.

I love Shrove. When I was a kid I looked forward to it with glee. And I still use it as an excuse for pancakes.
However, just as important is today Collop Monday. Today was the day you consumed all the meat in the house before Lent.

Heresy! No true Roman would put anything other than sugar and lemon juice on his Pancake

I listened to a Science Fantastic (with Michio Kaku!) podcast last week explaining why we stuff our faces with all that stuff. :)

    Pancakes are grim. Fact.

My husband loves them. He eats them with gravy. Yorkshire has a lot to answer for.

    Crepes.
Which should only ever be washed down with a cider from Brittany. Of which, I have three bottles. \0/

Pancakes are over rated. If they were all that then we'd be having them every day. Humbug.

Myself and my girlfriend have been having an argument over the past week about how best to celebrate St Pancake's Day. Maybe someone here can help.

The issue here is sugar. My faith demands that sugar be added to the mix. The mix should be thick so that when fried correctly, there should a gooey layer in the centre.

In her heretical interpretation, there should be no sugar added - sweetness is to be sprinkled on top after frying. I think this is nonsense.

So, which is the correct way?

(I have to leave my keyboard for a bit but I should be back later)

    No sugar added.

You can add sugar and lemon after they are cooked. - I put lemon on then I lay it onto a plate full of sugar. Roll it up and eat before it goes cold.

Sugar added, but the pancake should not be thick. More sugar is added afterward along with lemon juice. I also like them just with butter. Nom.

Blackcurrant jam is my only topping. But as to how pancakes are "made", made???, they just appear on my plate brought forth by the birth giver. I don't dare question how they came to exist. Even during years I'm not living at home the family gather for pancake Tuesday, even if it's just a cultural thing.

Every Tuesday should be Pancake Tuesday, the world would be a happier place, and there would be less fighting and stuff.

There'd also be considerably more obesity.

This is the recipe I use:

    American Style Buttermilk Pancakes

I serve them with chopped up banana, natural yoghurt and honey.

If I'm making "proper" pancakes I have them with Jam or else lemon, sugar and cinnamon.

This time I'm going to try Cadbury's Creme Eggs as a topping. If you don't see me posting by Wednesday, assume the worst, but take solace in the fact that I died happy.

I've just finished my breakfast pancake, and later for my dinner in work I've made a pancake with mince, onion, peppers and spinach with soy sauce, honey and lemon juice. Not sure whether to go sweet or savoury for my after-work pancake.

They only sell the powdered stuff. It's not very tasty though, can't beat organic.

Yes, but it probably contains horse babies instead of human babies.
