    hey guys,
cannot wait to get started in Trinity next month as 1st year :D what date is everyone heading up at?

Btw does anyone know what the "supplemental examination" for 1st years is about on the 27th August?

Supplementals is Trinity speak for repeats. Not for you (yet :P).

Questions repeat a fair bit, like the LC. The material's more difficult mind!

I just can't wait to get started! Maybe this enthusiasm will wear off after a while but right now, I'm pumped :D Went into TCD for a stroll with a friend today - only took less than 10minutes to get from the front square to our building. And with such a gorgeous campus, the walk doesnt bother me at all :)

Looking forward to seeing everyone in September :D

I wish I could be so enthusiastic about college. Entering final med year this Monday, can think of hundreds of things nicer than walking through campus... (goes and finds rope.....)

Guys, what date are we supposed to show up in Trinity on (first year)? :D couldnt find any info on the orientation website

Also, do the guys in older years have any advice what i should read a couple of weeks before starting? Like im not doing much these days and just thought i'd start on some med related book or text book or something :)

The books for first year which I'd recommend are: Last's anatomy, Stryer Biochemistry, Guyton and Hall physiology, . The school of medicine recommeded some other $hite physiolgy book but its terrible imo

But, tbh there is absolutely NO REASON to start reading these now, and you'll still be absolutely lost when that gob$hite for a lecturer starts drawing amino acids on the board.
Also, there is no reason to buy any of them as they are all in the library, and some people from older years have them as E-books on USB. ;)

You would recommend Stryer? I though it was a pile of steaming ****e tbh.

I thought Lippincott was crap. Stryer is a good book, but it is huge. You definitely need some book because no one has a clue whats going on in the lectures

Hey lads - how do we choose a "student selected module"? There's no info about it on the website, so do we just wait to sign up for one on Fresher's week? :/

There'll be an introductory lecture where they explain them all, after that you'll be able to join one online, it'll all be explained to you in due course.

Just wondering has anyone gone into Trinity to get the screening yet? I've an appointment tomorrow but I can't find my immunisation card from childhood, does this matter or can I do without?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61 ✭✭Allie79

I couldn't find mine last year either - moved too many times. Just tell them you haven't got it and they need to test your immunity, they'll just send away for the relevant bloodwork.

Anyone been asked to register yet? i've heard nothing on the subject :s

Nope haven't gotten any info about it, but a new link appeared on my.tcd.ie portal today so I'd say we'll probably be invited to register tomorrow. Anyone know what the story is with the vaccinations? My GP is giving me a course of injections for the last week but what do we actually do to verify the info?

I sent them the GP's form from the orientation link on vaccinations info, and my GP just signed it saying I'd had the vaccinations, and i also sent in lab reports saying that I'm immune to chicken pox but not immune to hep B and don't have Hep C.

You don't have to register until after freshers week normally. They'll be calling people by class group to come pick up their student cards in the first week of term. You just need to have the reg fee paid by then!

Ok thanks! Are the survey ones meant to be easier? Are there any that you don't need to keep the full 3 weeks free for?

2 weeks no? Survey/epidimiology ones are generally easier. Some lab ones can be fairly time consuming. I was 10-4 most days in a lab, but I liked it so it depends on the person!

    Thanks for the advice!

We have 4 weeks off and 3 are for the research projects... don't want to spend 3 weeks in a lab!

Not sure which ones might be easier, but MB has apparently been known to take his group on trips abroad to conferences or some such. Also, he's generally just a legend.

I did mine on a GWAS related to bipolar. Very stats heavy but somewhat interesting. Not the most time-consuming either IIRC.

Hey guys, one of our lecturers told us today that we should all have a bunch of equipment already for neuro exams as well as an opthalmoscope and put up a a slide showing the 20 things we needed to run out and buy (!). Any thoughts? Obviously most of us have a stethoscope by now and Talley and O'Connor but little else given we're only 2nd Meds. If there are things we do need to buy, any advice on brands/ models etc?

You don't. Tendon hammers are cheap if you feel the need to buy something.
