Wiley How much does immigration effect the planet outside of the our little part of it, very little last time i looked most people on the planet like it that way that's why japan is still 99% japanese, whats wrong with japan staying japanese or china chinese and likewise what would be so wrong with ireland staying irish?

Staying Irish? Well if the vikings had stayed in scandanavia, the Normans in France, the Saxons in in Germany and then Britain etc the we wouldn't be the "Irish" we are today!

In fairness to old hippie he has told us the word is offensive and we should accept he knows more on the subject than the rest of us. I for one would never use the word "oriental" as I now know its offensive and would not want to offend people I particularly like Asian people as I have found every one I have ever met to be polite, hard working and just really nice in general. Maybe people call us "westerners" but we should lead by example I think its a wonderful trait of the Irish we are virtually insult proof IMO. You can call me a westerner, a paddy, a mick, I dont mind I am not offended.

I've seen you mention it before that's all I was curious, and what exactly
do you mean by "having been schooled" that quote comes across to me
as something an ignorant pumpkin would say.

Also you told another poster the world mixes, then how come as another
poster said the population of Japan is 99% Japanese, making only 1%
non nationals while Ireland's non nationals make up 10%

So Ireland has mixed more than Japan does that make it less racist than
    Japan?

    Fair play, Noel.

We are just as hard working, polite and nice as our brothers and sisters in the Far East. Yes, there are, of course, differences. But we are all the same, at the end of the day.

My wife's uncle didn't call me a mick, a paddy or any of that pants but he did insult me, in front of the rest of my Japanese family. Won't bore you with the racist details... not to do with me being Irish, more a white boy. His nephew (my bro in law) took massive offense and shooed him out of the house. He hasn't been since. That was 9 years ago! :D

Rape and pillage of the Vikings etc has led to the "Irish" we are today.

Doesn't mean we should accept rape and pillage indefinitely.

My mate in Dublin school was Japanese in 1978-1980.

    Japan has racism, too.

But we can rise above all that.

That's all I can say tonight.

What's wrong is people claiming the status qou is fine because it's always been.

How do you want Ireland to "stay Irish" exactly? Should my wife never have gone there? My mom stayed in her own country? My great great etc grandfather never come over from Scotland?

How about the stupid claim that immigration is good "because it's always been".

Surely there have been times in history when immigration has been a bad thing, or at least there might come a time in the future when the accepted notions of immigration might be proven to be disastrously wrong, at which point it will be too late to do anything about it.

Where and when has immigration been a bad thing?

I'm talking about nomadic movement, emigration, people taking up lives in another country - not invasions.

What is the disaster you claim?

When will it be too late?

Why do you think immigration is good "because it's always been" is a stupid claim?

Your moniker would indicate you are Central European. If this is the case, why does immigration worry you so?

I suggest you take a short course in history, the vikings actually settled here, founded what we now know as Dublin.

I suppose Vikings were civilised by Dublin standards.

That's the advice you'd give someone who's been racially abused, is it?

Shur didnt every civilisation that invaded Ireland end up 'more Irish than the Irish themselves'

tut, everyone needs to chill out about the racist thing.... who cares? it only matters if you give a sh't... relax ya know.

I dont care if anyone wants to abuse me, i've more interesting and important things to be at

When racism causes you to be discriminated against in attempting to gain employment, housing, access to state and public services, leads to being bullied verbally and/or physically assaulted then how is "chilling out" an option?

And in doing so they influenced the Irish in both culture and language, look at the common names we have here, anything with Fitz in it is from the Normans for instance as I believe is Doyle (D'Oyle) etc etc. Like it or not the "Irish" have gone through several phases of change to get to where we are today.

go with the flow and if necessary, have a snap - thats how I do it, works for me, just chill and if it gets too heavy, don't take no sh'it - just SNAP.

your very lucky if this is all you have to worry about

just relax and have a buzz instead being so serious about the whole thing. its the healthy way, dont need to be getting stressed about it or anything

    It's not an option

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

How do you deal when people abuse you because of where you come from or the colour of your skin or when you're spat at?

How do you feel when people make unpleasant remarks concerning your wife/husband's ethnicity?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,229 ✭✭✭Sadderday

I'm just saying.... 'how i deal' is a different story, if its words... so what... if its actaully damaging, i would SNAP. said it before, stand up for yourself but pick your battles. no need to get wound up about every comment... just chill, who cares what people say anyway, you cant change it... as for a spit - thats when you take your racism chip off your shoulder and just SNAP because that behaviour is unacceptable. it doesnt always have to come back to racism.

I personally, think its sh'it that we arent all equal and treated the same by our peers... but I don't dwell on it... too busy doing every day things.

Just think everybody should stop walking around with letting words be issues seriously. I get it myself, its healthiest to let it go unless your in danger of physical harm.

Most of the time I just let it go but if someone insults my wife or any other family member, I usually remonstrate with them. I'd rather tackle ignorance, in all honesty.

Letting it go unchecked or pretending it doesn't happen feeds the problem, I believe.

For example, some people start or join in threads and bandy about all manner of bile and offensive comments in order to get a rise or laugh. But left unchallenged, they are a green light for others who will agree with what they're saying. They, I believe, are the one's who are the "private" racists. The one's who haven't the balls to say it in public but are very much against people who's skin colour etc differ from our own. You'll occasionally see them thanking an offensive post without ever saying what exactly they "think".

I have been referred to "paddy the irishman"in an e-mail sent by my then boss(my name's not paddy)

If only Steve Biko, Nelson Mandela et al had "toughened up"

You can take action against your employers or colleagues to ensure this doesn't happen again or speak to your union rep.

If it gets worse; being spat at, attacked, **** pushed through your letterbox, graffiti outside your house you can contact the authorities.

im not going to go to the union, I just take the pee out of the aboriginals instead
    no harm done
