no service history. That's a time bomb on one of those so I left it ..... for now.

Might not be so bad. The ad shows that a service was due in June of this year, so presumably the last service done in June of last year, so 18 months ago.

That said, the ad says that the last service was carried out in main Saab dealer (so using the right fully synth oil) and I could be wrong but I don't think Fitzpatrick's of Kildare is / was a Saab dealer. I would talk to the owner about that. Also ask him this trick question: "was the turbo replaced"

As you say, these are a lot of car for the money. They ain't no BMW, but a good condition one is a lot of toys / class / comfort for your bangernomics grand. Pretty reliable too and pokey enough compared to a lot of other cars.

So the tax is out, there might be a sludge problem, and the timing belt would probably need doing in the near future?
A lot of ifs and buts.

A lot of ifs and buts.

The engine was properly oil serviced 18 months ago. If it sounds fine now, very likely to be fine (if in doubt, a Saab indy will do a sump drop for about €200 - I didn't on mine, too expensive :))

And there is no timing belt ;)

That's one of the best things about the 9-5. What good is a 1k car if you have to spend €400 on a belt change down the road?

Proper bangernomics = either buy a car with a chain or be a brave belt dodger :D

If the turbo was replaced, the owner will be keen to tell you it was (money spent and all that). They think they will look good for answering a difficult question

Not a very good sign though. Turbo goes there was likely a sludge problem already. You can replace the turbo, but the engine is likely to die next. Which means car is scrap.

Number one tip for buying a 9-5: hold out for a (low mileage if you can) car with a lot of verifiable service history (where you can actually verify fully synth oil was used often)

Or wait a while. The sludge problem does not exist for '04 cars and those will be within bangernomics budget soon :D

Why would you buy a car knowing you've repair bills of at least 40% of the purchase price coming?

Because if I bought a €1k Saab 9-5 knowing I was going to keep it for 3+ years then I'd have no problem spending money on it, regardless of what % of the purchase price it was ( obviously being realistc I'd never spend more than what I paid for it). If I bought a €1k banger to last me a few months then obviously I wouldn't bother.

Because you could use that fact as a bargaining tool to lower the price?

For example you go see a car you'd value at €1500, find out it's due a belt shortly. Do some haggling, pay €1k and later get the belt done for 400 and you've saved €100

    FYP, fanboi ;)

I love (proper) Alfas. My best mate has two Busso 3.0l V6 GTVs, one a tight coupe, the other a rather comfy vert. Sound of the engines is wonderful :)

Neither is cheap to keep going. If you like your Alfas, honestly you can not expect to run them bangernomics style.

Agreed, my gtv cost me €850

Two times that has gone into getting it up to spec, through two NCTs etc.

I've still to fix the bodywork.

Most people looking for a cheap car aren't going to want to put money into one though.

That said, weirdly, given the car it is, I'd probably sell the gtv for about 2k once it's fixed up, so you could argue I'd make a profit having owned it for a couple of years.

Doesn't apply to most bangernomics though, nor to most bangernomic buyers.
