    So, I'm trying to compile a collection of movies and tv shows for my boyfriend. I got a multimedia hard drive and now want to fill it, and give it to him as a Christmas present. However, I am assuming that my collection of Chick flicks and Greys anatomy box sets aren't going to be high on his to watch lists, so I'm looking for some help in this department. What kind of things should I be looking for? What are the must haves in any collection?

    Christmas? Die Hard, Commando, Full Metal Jacket, Goodfellas, Casino, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, Platoon, Good the bad and the Ugly, Great Escape, Cool Hand Luke, Tora Tora Tora... loads and loads of options!

    All great suggestions (though missing the Rambo and Rocky series which would be essential), I'd make sure to get all three of the Good the bad and the Ugly trilogy (in fact you should probably get every Clint Eastwood film apart from the Bridges of Madison country).
    Withnail and I for drinking games (and its a bit of a change of tone from the others). Don;t be tempted by Chuck Norris films their nearly all brutal (which is sometimes good but IMO there so bad there just bad and I liked this film ...


    Anything directed by John Carpenter (upto 1990 no later), in particular They Live for the manliest fight ever

    Also ask or browse in the Film forums (if its a lot of films you get sick of action after a while)

    All of Christoper Nolan's movies;
    The Dark Knight Rises, The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Inception, The Prestige, Memento, Following.

    Others I would recommend include Million Dollar Baby, The Fighter, Gran Torino, Fast Five, Drive, The Town, Unforgiven, True Grit.

    Cool present btw :-)

    Oh and keep an eye on the formats/encoding that the media player can use in relation to the files your putting on it

    Download the wire as well if he hasn't seen it.

    Shawshank Redemption, rocky movies, Rambo movies, star wars, the godfather, look up imdb and if Quintin Tarentino directed it, put that on there too.

    The matrix, anything with Will Smith, Arnie, Sly Stallone, Bruce Willis, Will Ferrell.

    Heat, any given Sunday, Ronin, The Town, The Marvel Movies.. Etc etc

    Great present idea!

    Tv shows definitely the sopranos, the wire and breaking bad. Also maybe dexter, the walking dead....that's all I can think of so far, drawing a blank. Definitely 100% the first 3 though. Great gift.

    Brad Pitt as One Punch Mickey with his timeless quote "Need to have a shite".

    Probably throw No Country For Old Men in there too if it hasn't been said - Coen Brothers are pretty good.

    Edit; for something more light hearted and comedic try Old School and Wedding Crashers. Both are excellent.

    Can't believe I forgot Snatch - this is a must for you collection OP - quality show!

    Honorable mention to 50/50 also - probably my favorite movie in recent years, loved it from start to finish!

    Science fiction like Star Trek (the new one), Moon, and War of The Worlds. Entertaining and thoughtful.

    Found footage movies like Cloverfield and Chronicle.

    Superheroes are always good; the first two X-Men movies, the Wolverine one, the aforementioned Batman movies, Spider-man, Watchmen, The Avengers, Iron Man. The Ang Lee Hulk movie is insane but kind of manly.

    Don't forget dumb ass stoner comedies. Guys love dumb ass stoner comedies. So the likes of 40 Year Old Virgin, Pineapple Express, Starsky and Hutch, Zoolander, Superbad, Anchorman, Blades of Glory, the Harold and Kumar movies, basically most things by Judd Apatow starring with Paul Rudd, Will Ferrell or Seth Rogan! :-) Dukes of Hazzard is a terrible movie but its got Jessica Simpson in hot pants and is great fun.

    Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are great guy movies (and also have a little something for the girls). Actually on that note the Spaced tv show (starring the same people as in Shaun / Fuzz) boxset is a must (and has lots going on in it for girls too).

    American Psycho (for the 80s suits).

    Almost Famous (because every man fantasizes about being in a 70s rock band).

    If you get him cosy by the fire and nicely stuffed full of food and wine, you could try out his softer side by watching About A Boy (which is still quite manly) or even Knocked Up (as it has elements of dumb ass stoner comedies). Good Will Hunting might be good here too; bit risky but it is about guys after all.

    Music documentaries are always good; I'd recommend the Some Kind Of Monster Metallica one (he doesn't have to like Metallica). Same goes for Anvil, and the Oasis one "Lord Don't Slow Me Down".

    If he likes racing cars get him Senna (the movie).

    Fr Ted boxset.

    The Office (UK) boxset.

    Is it a given that all guys like Tarantino movies? If so I'd recommend his less popular stuff like Kill Bill (1 and 2) and Deathproof. Deathproof is great fun.

    That's all I can think of for now but will come up with a few more I'm sure!
