My Lumia has just froze and now turned off. Any ideas on how to get it back working??

It's like Ronseal. It does what it says on the tin, i.e. it will switch off the volume on the phone, but it will still vibrate.

Unless I have read it incorrectly, the OP wants to put the phone into outright silent mode, i.e. with no ringtone and no vibrate. You can not put it to outright silent if the vibrate is enabled, because it will always vibrate.

My school of thought is that silent is silent, no beeps and no vibrations. So on the 800 I can't achieve that unless I go into settings and turn off vibrations. That to me is awkward to say the least. When you hit the volume rocker, you should be able to cycle through ALL the options by tapping the little icon, i.e. ring & vibrate, ring, vibrate, silent, offline etc., just like you could do on the older models.

Its mad that you have to do so much to set the phone to silent. One of the many baffling things about this phone...

    So to summarise:

If you have vibrations switched on and you go into the volume settings, your options are:
    1. ring and vibrate
    2. vibrate

If you have vibrations switched off and you go into the volume settings, your options are:
    1. ring
    2. silent

I'll admit the graphic above doesn't explain that very clearly, but basically that is what it is saying.

so you can't select silent unless you've already switched the vibration off in the first place? Odd, that'll surely be fixed in an update.

Could I not hand it back under the "Sale of goods and services act 1980" ?
Not fit for the purpose it was sold?

Yeah id say you could, they might insist on trying to repair or replace it though which they have the right to do.

Try a soft reset of the phone - either hold the power button down for 10 seconds or hold the volume down button + power until the screen lights up. See if that helps. If that doesn't then it sounds like a defective handset. If it's under warranty you can bring it back to get fixed.

If you can get it turned on check to see what OS version are you running and what firmware? Settings -> About -> More information.

Really considering buying this, 150 euro seems like a great price for what it is. And having looked around a couple websites it seems like the phone itself has better specs than others at a similar price (lacking app store in comparison to iOS and Androids aside). But I feel I might as well ask if you would recommend this phone or if there are better alternatives? I reckon I could stretch my budget up to around 200 euro (Pay As You Go) but no higher. Also it would not be for business or anything like that, would purely be about having a gadget to mess about with since my current phone is not a smartphone and I've had it for years.

I'd pick space, star wars seems to be the same as angry birds. You can download and try both to see which you prefer.

Went with SW. Super fun but oddly doesn't have the XBL support or achievements?

Is Flash being used at any stage along the process? 800 doesn't like Flash...

Could be in some cases, I noticed one site needed to install Active X control on the PC before displaying video. The Lumia 800 doesn't display such requests.

I'm regretting not going with the huawei g330 now to be honest, it's 149 on emobile/meteor :(

As a first smartphone the lumia would be a great buy, but not if oyu are coming from ios or android

Just my opinion after having one for 2 days lol

I have the Huawei g300 & I regret not waiting a couple of weeks and getting the nokia tbh. Still find myself using my wife's LG Optimus 7 that's 18 months old for Web browsing and twitter on the go. I don't use many apps but the one's I do use are on wp7....
    Apart from jetpack joyride :-)

This is the problem with a lot of Android phones, unless you get a very high spec phone you're going to have problems with it. The great thing with the windows phone os is it will run great on all windows phones. The big plus Android has over windows phones is the amount of tweaking you can do. So it all depends on the what the user wants, for me the Nokia Lumia 800 is a great phone and a bargin at the current price. :)

Got my Lumia 800 back yesterday, it had to be sent away and get a new mainboard installed as it just wouldn't switch on no matter how I tried. I bought the phone on Adverts.ie and didn't have a receipt or anything, Fonemenders (Nokia Care Centre), took care of everything free of charge.

Yeah it can't handle Flash stuff and to date no patches (or whatever) have been released to remedy it, so I'm not sure if they even intend to...

Is there any workarounds that anyone is aware of?

I saw a post on another forum that I use about IP Cams and smartphones, I'll look it up and see if there's anything relevant there...

I think the idea is to move away from flash.

    It does :).

Ah yeah I know but it would have been good to have the support in the meantime. The phone is the guts of a year old now so that's quite a while to be without something that has had viral use over the last decade or so...

Microphone gone again. Last time I dropped it microphone side down in food. No reason this time and I don't want to be without it for 2 weeks again, so annoying.

Hi, have just purchased the Lumia 800 - sim free from Amazon. It is my first smartphone so not to familiar with it as phones go.

Without having to trawl through the thread, is there any updates or certain programs/apps I need to have/download etc

    Thanks in advance

    Got this phone yesterday.

Very impressed, obviously not as many apps as Android but all of the apps I used are there (or some variant of them).

Does anyone know of a web text app that works though? That's my only problem so far.

Love the Music player, etc on it too

They will give you a free one , just take care when punching it out of the card as it's easy to break the surround , which can be used as an adapter to put the micro sim into a phone that takes a full size one.......... my fat fingers broke mine :P

I have 3 different webtext apps installed. Noelle, Sendu and Webtextr. I get problems with all 3, but there's always one which is working when I need it. I'm on Meteor, maybe they work better on other Networks.
