Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

From reading the brief, I don't believe it would breach the guidelines by using an external transformer to supply your 9V, freeing up valuable space.

That would be good but how could you harnass it to use in the project?

I'm thinking of putting the fan in a tube and then connecting that by string to a motor and spool that can lower it up and down. That motor would be on a trolley that will move on one axis across one side of the project.

    still havent started, totally clueless

Have the parts nearly finished and ready for assembly. Aiming to get the structure finished by Christmas and then start the electronics and tidying it up in the New Year.

It's not a difficult project if you do the research and investigation. Want the A's? Get working lad!

  • Registered Users Posts: 73 ✭✭iFreeley

You gonna use a joystick for the x and y axis? or just use 2 seperate 2 way switches?

Does any1 have any good ideas on a grab mechanism? i have the manouvers of the crane pretty much down its just grabbing that table tennis ball is the hardest part.

Have a look at the grab mechanisms used by cranes in scrapyards. That will help you a lot. My Engineering teacher said that the more you study how it opens and closes its jaws, the better the idea you will have for your design.

Mine's done from mind, really simple. Requires no motors to grab or release the table tennis ball. Does require a little bit of complex drawings on the plastic sheeting. Just think outside the box. :)

yeh i have done that :) its the timing that really puts us under pressure because id like to work on a design that i know how to make instead of 1 the teacher gives us and your there goin how do we do this :s thanks anyway, :)

A hoover? You've exceeded the maximum stated dimensions for the project so you lose a few marks...

  • Registered Users Posts: 73 ✭✭Daniel L

hah a hoover :L im still working on my design the mesurements are tricky :s! do you make all the pieces first? then put it together and if it works, take them all apart again then polish each piece and put bak together again? im confused its my second year doing engineering not very keen on the whole project

Do it bit by bit like for the structure, just make the bars, assemble it and see if it suits your criteria, if so, then move on to the next part of the project and repeat.

    Hey :)
I was told by my teacher who isn't a very trustworthy source of information...that the Engineering project can't exceed 350mm on ANY individual part.
This is what the brief says:
"Presentation of the completed model should ensure that:
    (b) The longest dimension of the model does not exceed 350 mm".

There are parts I have that are technically about 400mm+ but they've been bent on a stripheater so the overall dimension still doesn't exceed 350mm.

So my question is, can individual parts with bends exceed 350mm? Thanks.

No matter what shape your part is, could it fit in a box with a 350mm side?

does anyone have any idea's to knock the ping pong ball out of pvc cylinder, it picks up the ball but i need to knock it out into the scoring zone??

Have you thought about using a linear actuator?

Right, calling all engineering students. I've come to a brick wall with the claw. What is everyone doing?? I have the bulk of the project done but just have no idea how im going to approach even beginning to build a claw, or a vacuum of some sort. Any ideas, or what are you all doing?

Mine is literally a piece of metal bent into a v shape , when it drops the force of it grips the ball , to get the ball off lower it onto a pole then

How do you get the ball out of your v shape into the hole?

drop it onto a poll , anyone do their Enhgineering pre yet ?

Dont see how that would work, but ok. Yeah engineering mock was grand.

The ball is lowered and when it hits the poll it's gets pushed either back up into the pick up area or else rolls into the scoring zone , <snip>

i'm still confused about something. in the brief it says a lift grab or suction technique. so does that mean if i had the ball on a pedastel, and a swinging arm knocked it off to the platform below without grabbing hold of it, would that be alrite?

If so, then you can use it, if not, then you can't.

Finished? Pahaha, that's funny dude, and you seem like a charming guy! But let me know how you get on in June, looking forward to rubbing this one in your face :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 73 ✭✭Daniel L

im nearly done mine .. my design is basically a boom arm crane ... i have the hopper done for the rotating scoring sysytem and all i need to do now is make a brass runner for the ball to go back to its original point :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 73 ✭✭Daniel L

oh and the engineering mock was easy lads :) !

Nearly finished up, hopefully il get it done tomorrow! Worked it out yesterday that me and some other lads have spent over 100 hours outside of class working on this with our teaching! ****ing ridiculous, but I cant wait to get to play with it

Not if you don't want some contact from the SEC. Once the date for appeals of LC grades is over, probably late August, then there is not a problem. Until then, they remain examination material.

mines looking to be between 30 and 40 pages, including all my diagrams and working drawings.

So we were told that the examiners are coming in to mark our projects tomorrow and that they will also be training in new examiners to mark the projects. This makes me a bit nervous, do you think this is likely to make them mark the project a bit easier or harder?

They will mark it exactly the same.
Very odd that you were told any details of what is happening.
