From what I read the most conclusive answer is that downtown will be smaller than Liberty city but actual city will be bigger.

Not sure where that came from.

General information so far is that the map will be larger than RDR, SA and IV put together (height included!). The map is 5 times wider than Red Dead if you flatten it (keep in mind that RDR didn't have many skyscrapers or deep oceans that I know of). 5 times larger also includes interiors.

To explain that better, if the map is measured in inches, and RDR is 20x20 inches in size, but is entirely flat, then V's map could also be 20x20", but include 5 skyscrapers. Each building could be 4" on each side (square) and have a 4x4" roof. If you flatten these buildings, your map is 5 times the size, but still the same area (because the buildings won't be flat in the game).

The map is 3 times the size of Red Dead if you only include width.

The actual city of Los Santos itself, is smaller than Liberty City. However, it's equal or larger when you include surrounding suburbs (and then obviously when you include the entire map, water, countryside etc. it goes back to being 3 times the size, etc.).

That's the factual information as I understand it at the moment (all from Dan Houser interviews, I believe).

Rockstar have never released a map in advance, if I recall correctly. The first time you see the map is when you open the game box and take out the printed version.

Didn't they reveal the SA map section by section in the months before release? I vaguely remember seeing the three cities on the R* website before buying the game.

My take on the size is somewhat similar - 3 times the size of RDR for the landmass itself, 5 times the size including ocean floors and interiors.

You could see the SA map on the Rockstar website, it was part of their marketing for the game. They'd update it every now and again with new points on interest.

It was the same for GTAIV I believe. The maps weren't particularly detailed, you couldn't zoom in or anything but it did give you a good idea of the scale.

That would make sense given the vast urban sprawl of the real LA. And unlike NY it doesn't have any sort of central focal point, what we would call a city centre.

A few of the users on GTA Forum have been mapping the various screen shots, here's GTAKiwis interpretation to date:

It's impressive how much folks on that forum can glean from a few screenshots:eek:

Scary is the word I would use.

I'm a fan but no where near this dedicated! Jaysis if they are half right the US NSA will be picking them up!

I don't think they are talking about flattening out the buildings and including their surface area. When they talk about flattening I think they just mean flattening out the land masses, hills, valleys etc.

Yeah, I can't see Rockstar claiming the area to be bigger than RDR, GTAIV and SA combined if they were sneakily including different floors of buildings. If that was the case, they could easily have just said the area was bigger than San Andreas, or twice as big as Liberty City and I still would have been perfectly happy.

Actually, apologies to KKV, I think I might have misread what you were saying. You're saying that the map size would be bigger than RDR, GTAIV and SA, but that if you included building interiors, it'd be five times bigger than RDR (which would be far bigger than RDR, GTAIV and SA).

    In which case.... Wow.

I'm fairly sure I'm right. I believe the 5 times bigger line is topographical in that includes heights aswell as interiors (ie; if you laid everything flat, beside each other).

Doesnt include height. Actual map size + interiors are three times the size of RDR. Add in underwater and it's five time the size of RDR.

I'd imagine if anything is flattened out, it is only explorable areas. ie, Mount Chilliad may be flattened out but not a skyscraper

Anyone else pre-ordered it? I did today in HMV (€4) and got the double sided poster:)

Yup, pre-ordered it with Xtra-vision a few weeks ago and got the double-sided poster.

How much of a deposit has to be put down?
I might just do it to get the poster and recall it in a few weeks.

€5 for Xtra Vision, €4 for HMV. Not sure about GameStop. Xtra Vision was right beside me so decided to get it there.

When I pre ordered it first, There was no posters, when back a week later showed my receipt and got two.

Got my brother to go back with the same receipt and say they same thing, that he didn't get one because they weren't in and he got another one, got my sister to do it too :D

I'd say so. If they opened for fifa and COD then they better.

Why are you all bothering pre ordering it ?

I remember the day GTA IV came out and I just strolled into GAME in Liffey valley and they had plenty in stock.

Cant believe there is a midnight opening for Fifa. I mean it is released every year with such small improvements over the last generation, I cannot get over how some people can be so excited for a new one.

Each to their own I suppose, I can imagine people looking at our love for GTA and thinking we're sad. But to them I say F*CK YOU ASSHOLE!!!!

TBH, at this stage you could take out "FIFA" from your post and interchange it with any number of games... CoD, Assassin's Creed...

Thing about FIFA people is that a lot of them buy one, maybe two games a year, and FIFA is the big one for them. Each to your own as you said yourself.

Its exactly the same for COD. I don't blame retailers though, its a serious amount of games they shift in the first 24 hours so open as early as possible, i suppose.

Exactly what I was thinking. I got GTA IV the next day no bother. Werent sold out the first day, I just didnt get a chance to go and get it. Ireland is far too small to need to preorder games. I can think of at least three game shops within ten minutes walk of me. You'll get it somewhere.

My nearest game shop is a 25 minute drive! You guys don't know how good you have it.

Nothing to lose by pre ordering it, potentially a lot to lose if you don't (well...a few hours gameplay, but right now I've give my left nut for just that)

24 hour Tesco is a great job. Shops up here won't bother opening at midnight I'd imagine. Maybe they will in dublin.

Tesco is where its at, as I said before, they are open 24hrs and always offer the cheapest prices on launch day of popular games.

Fifa and COD were €45 on launch. As was GTA IV IIRC

That was brilliant. Michael throwing the leaf and the facepalm moment at the end were highlights
