My wife brought me home a bottle of "Very Bad Elf" special reserve ale this evening. 7.5%. Very nice too!

Having a bottle of Brew Dog Zeitgeist Black Lager that I got in Drinkstore by mistake (or moreso i was given by mistake).

It's actually very nice. I think I've had it before but didn't really think much of it so never bothered with it again.

Was in Brew Dock yesterday. I didn't realise the owners are the same people as make the Galway Bay Beers.

Anyway, had a nice selection in there.

Leann Follain on cask, very very nice, but it was freezing when poured, had to let it warm up a bit. Delicious all the same.

Then went for a Left Hand Baltic Smoked Porter, my god, this is a lovely drink, lovely flavours.

The wife had a few bottles of Five Lamps Lager, which is brewed on Ossory Road, minutes from the Brew Dock. She thought it was nice, having been drinking Ór, I found it a bit tasteless after the LF and Porter, but it didn't seem to be overly hoppy, and had a malty character too. I'm not a lager fan, but my wife is and went back for more of this.

Went for a Stormy Port, it's nice enough, but wouldn't be my favourite porter/stout from the Irish micros. Was chatting to the barman in there, he said he liked Dark Arts, and was surprised to hear that O'Neill's serve it nitro, so he's heading over for a sample soon. Weird the number of barstaff in pubs like Brew Dock, Kavanagh's etc who don't know that about O'Neill's.

Spotted the "Strange Brew" tap, it was a brown ale, and I found it utterly delicious, so had two more.

Wife also had a pint of Metalman.

    *****************************************************

As we were drinking, we were getting different glasses with each different drink.

How open to giving out glasses to punters are these pubs? If I asked for a Metalman glass, would they be more likely to refuse, or say yes?

I don't really like pinching stuff.

Depends on who you ask really. I have asked for glasses and being told no but then others times they have said yes. Can't hurt to ask though.

Few new beers tried last night

Franziskaner Weissbier - Fairly standard Weissbier I thought, enjoyable none the less.

Trouble Brewing: Dark Arts Porter - Really enjoyed this, chocolate malt taste wasn't overpowering and was very smooth. Will definitely drink again.

Youngs Double Chocolate Stout: Similar to Dark Arts, but a much richer chocolate flavour. Prefered the Dark arts, but still enjoyable.

Galway Bay Red Ale - Tasty ale, nice hop kick.

Galway Bay Pale Ale - Really enjoyed this, very smooth and went down deliciously.

Was actually out with the brewer from Galway Bay last night (know him from college and his band were playing in Whelan's before heading to Against the Grain). He''s doing a meet the brewer event next Friday in the same bar, looking forward to it.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Was this a bottle or on tap? Been drinking a few stouts/porters lately

Had a bottle of Brewdog's Hello My Name is Beastie, Bramble infused double IPA. 8.2%.

Wasn't really expecting to like this but I was very pleasantly surprised.
Fantastic beer - very little bramble on the nose but a really nice berry finish in the flavour but it still really tastes like a DIPA. Beautiful beer. I'm not always crazy about Brewdog's 'novelty' beers but this one really works.

Any DIPA fans should give it a go.

I hope I get to try this. I love the LL Cider. How much did a pint cost?

The company is based there. The beer, AFAIK, is brewed at 8 Degrees in Mitchelstown. Which is still, technically, minutes from The Brew Dock.

Just back from Tesco, picked up some of the London Pride porter and Greene King IPA.

Really looking forward to the porter, have it chilling at the moment.

Odell's / Thornbridge Pond Hopper Double Extra Pale Ale. Really nice beer. Worth the price premium? I'm not so sure.

It's almost a soft drink. Gira is the Lithuanian version if Kvass. Very popular soft drink in that part of the world.

Young's Double Chocolate Stout is pretty nice

Not getting the taste explosion I'd expect for "double chocolate". A nice drink but well behind Leann Follain & Fullers London Stout IMO

Greystones. Had a few of them too. It was very nice, I'll be getting more in for Christmas.

Reminds me of cheap milk chocolate...

It's not a bad beer but I couldn't drink more than one of them.

There's a weird pipe tobacco after taste I really don't like about it as well.

If you want to try a good chocolate stout that's widely available, try the Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout. It's delicious.

Fantastic beer, but entirely chocolate-free. Maybe that's why you like it ;)

Some random beers I've picked up, some craft beers I've wanted to try for a while and some Canadian macro stuff for novelty value.

Those Baird beers are delicious. Particularly the Suruga Bay.

Drinking an Erdinger Schneeweisse, and as someone who generally doesn't like Hefeweizen's, I don't hate it...
