    Last night was a first!
I got home from work early at 7pm and decided to give the treadmill a blast, so off I went and it was great! I ran faster than normal trying to get the speed up a bit and did 6k in 39.56 which is brilliant for me, I couldn't keep that pace up over a long distance but at least I'm improving albeit slowly.

Thats great just keep pushing even just a little bit at a time you will see a improvement. Well done keep it up

A very FROSTY 7 miles this morning, wow it was slippy!! I enjoyed the cold running, it was 1 degree when I went out. Lovely! I'm not sure how I will cope with the warmer conditions in Edinburgh, part of the marathon is coastal so I suppose there will be a breeze. As Christmas approaches the realization of this task is settling in. I'm feeling positive but GULP! As Hal Higdon says a lot of marathon prep is in the mind..

i have not gone for a run in a week due to being sick cant wait to get back out.
On a plus note a athletes pitch was built next to me its a bit pricey but might see how it is.

Sorry to hear you have been sick, you feel as if all your fitness will go if you have a week off! Take your time getting back to it. It won't take you long to get back on track. Wednesday I did 6k on treadmill and 5k this morning, I try to make those mid week runs quicker, it's tough to run fast though! Will do 8 miles on Sunday outside. Wow a track sounds great! They are supposed to be amazing to run on, we will look forward to your report on that

There has not been much to report the last few weeks, but today saw the start of the 8 week pre training programme, ie in 24 short weeks I will be across the water in Edinburgh lining up for my first marathon. GULP!
This morning I headed out to do 10 miles, legs felt heavy, I really think the treadmill is no substitute for the road and it shows but at this time of year beggars can't be choosers and I'm doing my best! Took a wrong bloody turn and ended up doing 11.5 miles, I had to walk here and there up the hills which frustrates me but I was determined to go the distance. Time was out the window and I was just glad to get back home.
How am I going to do 26.2???

Try not to think about it now. Focus on each new LSR distance in your training plan and you'll find as you achieve each one of those you'll find 26.2 is getting closer and closer.Stating the obvious here I know, but the psychology of it is important in my opinion.

You can definitely do it. Believe!;)

I felt like this before my half marathon training plan started too, I know I can do it but I guess I got a few Colly wobbles!
What if I get sick and need to miss a few runs?
What if, what if, what if??
One day at a time it's going to be an interesting journey!

Well here we are after Christmas and what a pie fest of a week its been!
I was off work and took full advantage and got out to do my running outside, which I must say is FAR superior that the treadmill.
    Sunday 23nd 10 miles
Monday 24rd 30 mins very steep hill walking on TM
    Tuesday 25th 5 miles
    Wednesday 26th 3 miles
    Thursday 27th 3 miles
    Friday 28th Rest
Im not sure what to do tomorrow and Sunday I will do 7 or 8 miles, i really feel the mid week runs are very importand for building leg strength.
My official plan begins on Jan 21, 18 weeks till the MARATHON, at the moment Im in PRE TRAINING, it all sounds very important but really Im crapping myself.
If any of you are on twitter, follow me on @zoomingtilly
Bart Yasso retweeted me yesterday and now I have a load of marathoners doing their first one in 2013 following me!
    How are your plans going?
    :D

    Well!!!!
    I think I have had a revelation.
After my running outside all week I found this mornings 8 miles not as devastatingly hard as the previous Sunday runs. I now realise that those mid week outside runs really do work and the treadmill is not nearly as effective. Solution? Pray for bright mornings!!!!
This week coming I will again do all my runs outside, and will have to figure out how to get through the next few weeks till the mornings are indeed on the turn. As we have passed the shortest day we are going in the right direction!
I guess we all learn things on our running journey. For some maybe the TM is enough, but for me I need the hills and roads. Tough training in theory will stand by me come May 26.

    145 days to go.
Today is January 1 and as the world begins its diet/non alcoholic 2013 I have stepped into my marathon year.
Excited/nervous and scared all at once. But as someone once said all great journeys begin with a single step...
My reply to this is... HELLS YEAH!!!!!
    Off to do 5 miles.
    Happy New Year everyone

    Any other advice?

Oh yeah, the New Years Day 5 miles turned into a 3 mile jog and a 2 mile slip slide over the black ice!!! Frustrating!
At least I attempted it, Im longing for the end of this month and the bright mornings, last night I got home early and headed out for 3 miles and the last .25 mile I had to walk as it was BLACK dark...ha!!!!
I might try doing some of my runs in town where I work next week...street lighting!
Its all a learning curve, but I want to get outside as much as I can.
    9 miles Sunday

The long runs and medium runs are very important. Recovery runs are also important but listen to your body and dont over do it.

i dont think there is much danger of me overdoing it!!!!

I started off with Saucony and now I have 2 pairs of Brooks that I really like as I have a slightly wider foot. I wear orthotics in my shoes and I find Brooks great!

Had Asics Kayanos before but now on Brooks Adrenalines. find them very good..come to think of it due to change mine too. Custom fitting is way to go. Thought I would never change from Asics but glad I did now.

AmphibianKing in Bray.Cannot recommend them enough . They have a place in ballymount ind estate too which might be closer for you? I wouldnt go near Elverys now for running shoes having experienced both Elverys and AK. The distinct difference is the expertise of sales people. They are all experienced runners themselves so understand your requirements better I feel. They also spend a lot of time ensuring you get the right shoe so making an appointment is a good idea.

Live in louth so Dublin would be the closest, have another 200 mile left with my current shoes. I'm planing to do the DCM this year should I follow a plan like hals or do my own thing?

Definitely follow a plan IMO. It's amazing the progress a structured plan brings. Going out on your own could work out well but you could make a balls of it too. I know I certainly would have without the plan laid out in the novices thread last year.
