My son got a letter yesterday saying
Award - 100% Tuition fees and 100% Student contribution (subject to a maximum of €6,270)
    Maintenance - €0.00
This despite our combined income for the year 2011 was 25,000!
What do ye think are the chances that we'll be successful on appeal? Our combined income for this year will be similar. His college is 50 miles away from home and is the nearest one to us that is doing this course. We've managed to pay the rent so far, but are really concerned now.

    Appeal it.

if you only earn 25k and live 70km away you should be getting maintenance of €5,915

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Thanks, guys. I've just downloaded the forms to appeal. Should I ring SUSI too?

Sorry - this is correct. I made a mistake

Last Tuesday I got the letter I was expecting from SUSI! About time
So I put in my bank details that very day. I was awarded the amount I was expecting - the special adjacent rate so no worries there. All I'm waiting on now is for the money to be put into my account...

Ring up imo! I appealed mine, and got my local TDs to call on my behalf and without their pressure I feel it would've taken weeks. I had mine sorted in under 2 hours thanks to their help! It's nice to know that some TDs use their elected power for good!

I posted this thread several weeks ago and cannot believe the sheer volume of people that has replied.

I myself am still no further on in my grant process, I haven't even been told if I'm getting it or not yet. Last night I completely lost my patience. I sent them a long email describing my struggles to pay for food and rent and how I would undoubtedly be forced to drop out soon if I did not pay fees, rent etc.
I told them I would be contacting my TD and newspapers, like many other students as it is truly RIDICULOUS that I sent my documents in months ago and haven't received a penny.

I'm honestly not expecting a reply in the 'one working day' they promise.

Hi, I would definitely appeal that, I've seen on this website and others that people have been sent letters with the wrong amount on them. Call them up to double check it was the amount that they consider that he was entitled to, then appeal if they didn't think they made a mistake. Get on to your local TD and maybe your son's college has a student union that is dealing with the problems to do with the granting system.

I'd ask the person on the phone to draft a letter to the supervisor as well, I did that and emailed the Payments section of SUSI directly and the problem Re: Wrong amount was sorted fairly quickly.

I was just wondering, are SUSI going to back date us on the money we've missed?

I started college in early September but I only entered my bank details this Thursday. A friend of mine started college the same time as me and got his grant this week, but hasn't been back dated any money so far.

It will probably be next Friday. My friend's son put in his bank details on the 31st October and two Fridays later some money went in.

After appealing I got my first payment on October the 19th, but only for that month, no back payment. I think we are scheduled for the final months payment of the grants in June [after college has finished] its a bit inconvenient but at least you know you are going to get the money so you can just get an overdraft if necessary. You will probably be paid within the week and then get another payment on the 21st, the scheduled payment date :)

I am nearly certain that they pay over 9 months so it's not that you miss a payment but that you might get an extra payment in the summer

I had to send in further documentation but the lack of information that we are receiving is crazy. I'm struggling as it is and not knowing when I'll get any money(if any) is terrifying!

The grant is being paid out from October to June instead of September to May,
So you are meant to get back payment from October until your first payment,
at least that was what i was told

I got my letter the other day. I've been awarded a grant.
    But all it specifies is;
Award: Full Maintenance and 100% Fees Adjacent.
    Maintenance Grant: €0.00

I'm still unsure what amount I will actually receive. I called them but got fobbed off. Basically they couldn't tell me.

I'm not sure how I can appeal within 30 days if I don't find out what I'm actually getting before then.

I'm also unsure why they asked me to enter my bank details since I've already paid my €8.5k fees to my college who say that any grant will be lodged to their account, not mine, for them to reimburse me.

    Anyone make sense of this?

    No.

    That makes no sense.

Ring them back and ask them for full details.

    Are you doing a postgrad?

Also - don't forget to email all the TDs/Senators

Check out the levels of the grant, if you are over a certain amount of income you are not entitled to any maintenance just the payment of the fees. If you are under the amount specified then appeal with evidence you are under it, call your TD if you are not sure how. The fees grant is different from the maintenance. :)

I wouldn't personally reccomend calling a TD if you need to appeal. I would reccomend calling them if SUSIs administration is crap. The information on appealing should be easily available.

I couldn't really understand it myself, so I called mine after SUSI wasn't much hel, he sorted it out for me since mine got royally messed up first time around.

The other day i stated that i had a letter from the office of the ombudsman which states that SUSI doesnt fall within its remit. I misplaced the letter but requested them to confirm via email and i received a reply this morning
    Our Reference : INV/--/----

    26 October 2012

    Dear Mr

I refer to your recent correspondence in connection with SUSI.

The Ombudsman may investigate complaints against Government Departments and Offices, Local Authorities, the Health Service Executive, An Post and bodies within the remit of the Disability Act, 2005. SUSI does not come under the remit of the Ombudsman.

I regret therefore that we cannot be of assistance to you in this matter.

    Yours sincerely

My son has just gone into his college to ask has his attendance been sent to susi, they said they didn't know they had to.

I have just had a reply from Willie O'Dea, apparently there is a motion in front of the Dail this week.

This is an indication of the very poor communicaton between SUSI and the colleges. Most students are probably not even aware that this has to be done, I wouldn't have known about it if hadn't been for reading it on here.

Does this have to be done before we recieve our first payment?

My university in edinburgh never heard of SUSI until I went in and annoyed them about it, but I was told it is not your job to keep going to attendance office and doing what SUSI are supposed to be doing!

My uni told me that usually a cd is sent with all awarding students for the college, its then updated by the attendance office and sent back to awarding authority, and done every few months.
Not up to the student to follow this up!

I wouldn't have known about it either until I read it here! It sounds like another added headache for students to contend with

I have heard that ITs sent in attendance records but I don't think universities do. I don't think large colleges or unis in Ireland keep attendance records

Im attending college in the north of ireland and i dont think they are aware they have to do such thing. Also because i go to college there i have to pay my own fees so my college would have little contact with susi.i emaild about this issue and hope it is brought up in tomorrows meeting.
