think ill buy an astra h van and kit out the back for a project

    Astra h van came in a 1.3 cdti 90bhp 6 speed model(I have one)
It also came in a 1.7cdti 100bhp 6 speed this model is harder to find in Ireland if you are looking at 2007 or 2008 year. The 1.3 is not as slow as everyone thinks slow on take off 1st gear after that it pulls well true all the gears and is reasonably quick getting up to 120kph if you drove it right. No doubt the 1.7 is a better van but I couldn't find one the time I bought Mine also my 1.3 2008 was bought for peanuts it was so cheap for the year I just couldn't leave it behind. There are a good van even the older model.

im 6ft 2, i could probably kip in it diagonally would you think? have you had any problems with the 1.3 ive read it can suffer a fair few problems. they are ridiculously cheap though which is why im interested, itd make a good project!
i do feck all miles but its so cheap i could deal with a problem or 2 and would do much more miles if it didnt cost so much on petrol.

My one has air con but it's the only 2008 one I've seen in Ireland with it. Air con is extremely rare on them. The one I got it sportive spec so has lumber support, air con, hand stitched leather stealing wheel( same one as is in the opc), roof rails, 16 inch alloy effect wheels, silver dash inserts and loads off other stuff I can't think off. Tbh with you I've never seen one for sale with the same spec. But I'm sure they can be got.

I am 6ft 2 myself but never tried to lie in the back but they are roomy enough. As for the 1.3 engine the main problem with them is alot of the rubber pipes perish in them. 2 weeks ago I had a leak in the cooling system of off the pipes perished and leaked. I brought it to an Opel garage they changed all clips and rubber pipes just to be sure for 140euro. That's the only hassle I've had with mine so they are really reliable once serviced correctly. Only using castrol 5w30 for Opel engines if you use any other kind of oil you will have serious hassle with it. I have to say I like mine only got it 5 months ago and there is 149k km on it but feels like new.

When I got mine there was 140k km on it one owner full Opel service history 2008 I paid 3500 euro which I would consider very reasonable. Look on the post a picture thread if you want to see pics of it you will get a good sense of what the inside is like on the sportive is suprising different to the standard model.

This sounds like a bad project. But a t5 transporter instead if you're trying what I think you are...

So what's the shtory with trans am m8? Still for sale? If you had it for sale before I bought scooby I would have been all over that thing as a weekend car and some **** box as daily.
You just can't beat good old fashioned American V8

Too big man. I'm not going full camper at all don't worry, more like stop gap nights sleep basic comforts :)

If you are planning to try and sleep in the back of a van, the VW transporter size van is great a land cruiser is also comfortable. I'd imagine some sort of estate would do a job nicely.

Even a hammock in the back of a decent size van with a sleeping bag is lovely, stretch it from top left corner to bottom right!

You'd be surprised how more car like the newer vans are to drive!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 634 ✭✭✭cabb8ge

I only ever see one top left corner in any van I look in :)

picked up rental golf with 10400 kilometers on it..... had it 3 days and now we're on 11800 kilometers. ... goes back in a few hours.

it was also nice and shiney when they gave it to me.

half of county Louth is on it. ... but just driving on wet roads with puddles.

but having this automagic box for 3/4 days has definitely made me decided that my next car/jeep has to be definitely automatic !

dunno how I'm gonna drive my civic tomorrow with clutch and all... but still can't wait to get it back :)

also this golf has Bluetooth built into it.... gonna keep it saved on my phone so if I ever see it around I can scare the shoite out of some poor forigner :D

Yeah I forgot about the hammock idea, can't imagine it being too good for my back but very handy. Its just another idea in my head :-)

After much deliberation when I should have been thinking about work, I told your man to shag off with his money, the Astra and I have come too far to part ways :D

Automatic if fine. There're time when I want one, and times when I don't

Only reason I don't like autos is that I have large feet that tend to catch the accelerator when I try and brake.

Stomp on the clutch prevents that being the issue it would be in an auto.

That, and manuals don't cost thousands and require a black-arts degree to fix.

Just lied in the back of my van I'm 6ft 2 and surprisingly I fitted comfortably if I lie diagonally i have nearly a foot of space at my feet. Hopefully this helps. If the bulkhead was removed there would be even more. I'm surprised as I didn't think id fit.

The very cars you can't rescue are the nicest of them all...

Saw a clean black 166 in Kilcock today, window smashed, unblemished panels violated with carelessness. Or another pearly one, with the optional 17 inch wheels and black leather. Both with the ics in bits, awaiting to be stripped. To top it off, a ruined Marea TD75 with a really clean D8 406 on top of it.

    Why?

What possesses people to throw such fine cars away? I'm usually left with sh*te to try and restore some life into, a losing battle. A f*cking disgrace :(

The car is feeling a bit unsure on it's feet, seems the Eagle F1's have given their best, and the Dunlops on the backs are getting low, so that'll be 4 new tyres. And even better, the car tells me it's now due a service.

So, 4 new tyres, and a service, which will also likely include the DSG oil change. Time to cancel Christmas I think.

I get 6 months out of my rear tyres, circa 6000 miles.Count yourself lucky. ;)

6 months! What are you doing?

I've mine a year, and am replacing them as they are getting old, and three of the four were on it when I got it. Done about 12k miles in that time.

On a whinge note, getting in and out of cars on crutches is the devils work.

Apparently I've many weeks of this to look forward to.

    Not tried the bus yet.

I'm 12 months and 12k miles and the tyres don't need to be replaced but are near it.

    I'm mostly city driving though?
