And cheers Dar, might give that a go soon!
Where did you order the plastidip?

Got the Black from the CleanCar guys, but they don't have the Metalizer, you have to get that direct from PlastiDip themselves...

Dar - you should do a "how to" in the DIY section - would love to see how you do it.

Alrighty, I'll do up a proper How To when I do the alloys that are on the car as it seems a few people might appreciate it.

I will be planning on doing them as soon as possible, but I'll need a dry day that hopefully wont be too cold so the PlastiDip sets well... So I might be waiting till March then! :D

Possibly next weekend, if the weather is clear for one of those days!

Not according to the iPhone weather App...

I'd love it to be dry tomorrow, if it is then I'll be getting the axle stands out! :D

It's a top secret PlastiDip process I may have created (ie. stole). :D

It's basically a standard Black PlastiDip base, but to get a metallic Gun Metal Grey finish, you use PlastiDip Silver Metalizer on top of it. ;)

So basically same way as painting shadow-chrome? :P

Have to say, I much prefer the "middle" to the "final", but maybe in person that might change

The middle and final actually look quite different in person to the pictures.

The middle is a Matte Black in person, it looks strangely satin/grey in the pic. The final result isn't as shiny as it looks in the final pics there either. It actually changed slightly over night as well as it cured and now looks like below:

    endproduct.jpg

(still probably doesn't come out the way it actually looks in the pic, but that's a lot closer in natural light once it had dried)

not today, but this week :)

    2 new firestones up front
    new oil and filter
coolant system flushed and new coolant
    headlights focused
****ty low suspension replaced with originals
    being tracked in the morning

spent all morning cleaning it and its now sitting under a cosy layer of Jeffs prime, followed by Jeffs addicted to glos with meguiars endurace gel on the tyres and good old turtle wax on the alloys!

NCT at 4.15 tomorrow, come at me!!

Well here's the process, in the middle obviously at the matte black stage...

    Looks brilliant! :)

I'd leave them at matt black. That car looks fantastic like that!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,844 ✭✭✭Jimdagym

I don't like it. That's a savage car, and the regular alloys finish it beautifully imo.
I think those black alloys are a bit skanger me banger.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 866 ✭✭✭renofan

I'd have to agree with Jimdagym tbh. Much prefer the original wheels.

Gunmetal grey, silver but not matt black, I don't think black wheels suit the car

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,106 ✭✭✭dar83

I expected divided opinion, but not that much. :D

Two very positives and three very negatives... interesting.

Well, as someone said, Gun metal grey or a non-matte black might be nicer. I think it looks good on your car, but a lot of skangermobiles have similarly painted wheels.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,106 ✭✭✭dar83

Yeah, gun metal is the plan. I just ran out of light yesterday and didn't want to do a dodgy job in the dark. :)

They'll be black until next weekend anyway, so I'll see how it goes until then.

I think the matte black looks really well on it, maybe an RS spoiler or something might finish it off?

With my own, I sealed the new wheels over the weekend with Chemical Guys Wheel Guard and had them fitted this morning. I'm still running the factory suspension for a few more days (coilovers only arrived today) so thought I might have to put up with some rubbing until the KWs are fitted but they're not rubbing, touching or fouling anywhere much to my surprise. It's a fairly aggressive setup with 19x9.5 ET33 +12mm fronts and 19x9.5 ET33 +15mm rears but I might roll the rears and run a larger spacer at the back.

I could do lots of things to the car and not mind, but fitting an RS spoiler I couldn't do. It's not an RS and I'm even pushing my own boundaries with the Alloys, but because I really like how they look on it I'll allow it. :P

I couldn't do the RS spoiler though, but appreciate the input. :)

The stance on yours looks great now, really like that car!

Down on power. Can't have that!

Lack of a smoke stack :pac::pac: gave me the impression that the engine wasn't getting enough fuel.... Time to change the fuel filter

    New one

    Old un, half way out...
    Image2400.jpg

    I've seen worse. Buuuuuuut...
    Image2401.jpg

It was clogged up with a fine coat of that brown stuff. That filter did just 6k miles  Thankfully they're only £2 a pop. I have a spare one in the boot and a set of allen keys to open the housing :)

Power is back and so is the smoke stack :pac::pac::pac:

To be very honest I absolutely hated those RS alloys on that Focus, thought the ST's were waayyy nicer...

But black, they look gooood in black

Picked up some alloys from done deal. 16's, off a passat. Tyres like new. Didn't fit sellers car. Paid just over 300, and the tyres are over 80 each. So free alloys!

Glad they worked out for you in the end.

Give them a good clean up and seal them before you fit them. :P
