When Kippure first came on a few years back, it was stronger in Portaferry than the Divis Muxes. This lasted a good few weeks, then the signal was nulled in my direction. Going by the CC signal today, I'll be able to flip the Kippure rx to vertical, take it down a good few feet and use CC instead.
Like Kippure was at first, I'm getting a great signal on an indoor attic aerial. just hope it's allowed to stay that way!

It will do. This is an internationally coordinated post DSO signal. BTW it means people in Lecale can now use CC whereas before it was wrecked by ghosting from the Mournes. It also means those Kippure VHF aerials should be taken down as they are now toast.

All ye Nordies seem to be very pleased with the analogue turn off today thankfully, if the northern Ireland channels were added to it would be a great service for us, its a pitty an exception can't be made on the island of Ireland basis for rights to have one proper service on an all-Ireland basis.

However, those living in the R.O.I. do have Freesat, which is virtually indentical to Freeview apart from 4 or 5 channels, and far less of a hassle for those in the North that can't get Saorview and are stuck with Saorsat.

Even the 50 kw COM multiplexes from Divis should get well into the ROI.

The vast majority of the north will be able to pick up Saorview though won't they?... ya as the channels are available FTA anyway it would be great and make the service real competition for sky, UPC and the rest up north.

I'm in east Tyrone on the shore of Lough Neagh. Previous had perfect analog reception. Have RTE Ch 800 now and I assume it comes from Carlingford - saorview but there is sound and no picture.

Also Iv just re-tuned the TV - no CH 52 or 53 from Divis Mountain!!

Do I need a free view box?

Do you have a Freeview HD box?, if so I think you should be able so see all the Saorview channels (as long of course you are receiving good signal from the republic)

I do not have a freeview box because my tv is digital built in. (Have all the UK channels). I presumed I would also be able to receive RTE from Divis as I am receiving BBC etc from Divis no problem.

My TV is new enough, so Im surprised I'll need a freeview box to receive from the saorview service.

Will the 1 freeview box gain me reception from freeview and saorview?

thanks - I see - well shame on all parties concerned - that should have been all thrashed out before going live on the NIMM

    43. Market enquiries also indicate that viewer programme preferences may
differ significantly between Northern Ireland and the State and hence
any increase in potential coverage does not necessarily imply increased
viewers or advertising impact. Significantly in this regard, the
proposed JV will not be able to tailor either programme content or
advertising to target Northern Ireland viewers. In addition, the
programmes to be broadcast by the JV will be subject to rights issues
(i.e., its parents will have to black out programmes for which they do
    not have UK broadcasting rights).
This will further diminish any direct
impact of the JV on viewers and advertisers in Northern Ireland and
any indirect impact on television advertising in the State.

Yes, but it will have to be a Freeview HD box as the signal is different from the standard Freeview in your tv (it will also get you the UK HD channels as well of course).

Post the make & model of your tv, if you want to be sure what reception capability it has.

It is an LG 50PG3000 50 inch plasma, got it in currys 2 years ago so Id say there is plenty of them around the North.

Is it because RTE is broadcast in a different frequency from BBC from Divis that the standard digital ready tv's can not pick up with out a box?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59 ✭✭JamesyBelfast

Getting Saorview so easy in Belfast really is bloody awesome. I had no idea I'd be able to get it perfectly with an indoor aerial.
    LOVE HAVING IT!!!!

I reckon though that most people up here won't have any idea that it's possible. Most people I talk to don't even know what I'm referring to when I mention Saorview and when your average person retunes for the Freeview channels they'll never notice if the Saorview ones pop up in the 800s.

Am also amazed at how few people here seem aware that the RTE channels are now on Freeview. I know it's been mentioned on the odd obscure news item, but most of the big features about the NI DSO on TV recently have made no mention of the addition of RTE1, RTE2 and TG4 to the service.

RTE from the NiMM and HD channels require a DVB-T2 tuner.
You have a very large TV, but no HD at present.

Not all of NI can get the RTE channels on Freeview :(

That TV seems to be only MPEG 2 (just Freeview not Freeview HD), not the MPEG 4 that is required to pick up Saorview/RTE from the south.

If not Freeview or Saorview then you can through Saorsat which is available across the whole island.

The problem in the North is that neither Saorview or the NIMM (RTE on Freeview) is available on standard Freeview tv's or boxes, but only Freeview HD tv's or boxes. Unfortunately most people only have the standard Freeview setup, although in time this will change as people upgrade and more and more of Freeview moves to HD.

This will surely change over time with the BBC and UTV turning HD today, it is only a matter of time before freeview HD becomes standard.

It says it is "HD Ready", what does that mean exactly, obviously not freeview HD then so!

Not a lot unfortunately, a marketing ploy, basically means it can display HD when connected, but unless you have a Freeview HD box or SKY HD box connected you will not be able to view broadcast television in HD.

    I see that on wiki
"A UK BBC television programme found that separate labels for display devices and TV tuners/decoders confused purchasers, many of whom bought HD-ready equipment expecting to be able to receive HD with no additional equipment;[3] they were sometimes actively misled by salespeople—a 2007 Ofcom survey found that 12% were told explicitly that they could view analog SDTV transmissions in HD, 7% that no extra equipment was needed, and 14% that HD-ready sets would receive existing digital SDTV transmissions in HD"

Looks like I'll have to purchase a freeview HD box then so. Anybody got any recommendations? I see one on Argos for 59 quid. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5323218.htm

Tesco Outlet on eBay last week were selling one of their Technika Freeview HD boxes for £20 including shipping. They had lots of them but are now sold out again.

I bought one of these last year from them for £20 and today in Belfast with an indoor aeriel it picked up all the UK HD channels as well as all of Saorview.

I'd keep an eye out for that.

I also think Maplin from time to time sell Freeview HD boxes for as little as £20 or £30.

I wouldn't pay £60 for one these days. Soon they'll be giving them away... :-)

I should think every channel in the UK will be Freeview HD by 2018 or 2019 ( confusingly including SD ones :) ) . It allows far more channels to be stuffed on air.

By around 2015 or 2016 it will be impossible to buy a bog standard Freeview box or TV, they will all do Freeview HD.

Not confusing if you refer to the DVB-T2 modulation of the signal, as you should. Freeview HD is just a brandname, not an engineering standard.
