Optimus GREEN variable laser designator

After slaughtering the nd3 and nd5 in a thread about them a few months back,Rabbit Assassin recomended one of these.
I have been out with lads that have paid mega bucks for the nd3 and nd5 and i just thought they were pure ****e the mounting bracket they came with was like something for airsoft and when it got cold the nd3 just gave up.So i took a chance on one of these (less than 180 delivered from ebay)as i have been coming accross a lot of lamp shy problem foxes lately.
Went out with moby30 last night for a few rabbits that have been giving his neighbour grief so brought along the optimus designator on the .223 just in case we came accross a fox , im glad i did now.
We got these 2 aswell as about 10 rabbits,the first one was about 80 yards and the 2nd about 20,they payed no attention to the beam ,just kept on mooching,should have had another older fox who has been legging it for the past 6 months every time a light has been put near him but i wasnt sure of the back drop so i didnt pull the trigger:mad:fool.
I was driving around on top of the jeep and it was freezing but the designator did not loose any power,i was looking at rabbits at about 250 through the scope not a bother,you can tighten the beam up and go out further and the mount has a elevation and windage tumbscrew so you can line it back up with your cross hairs fairly quick.
It comes with a battery , pressure switch, two mounts ,one for a picatinny and one for straight mounting on to your scope.
Would recomend this if any of you lads are having problems with lamp shy foxes.

Nice one, does it work for scanning the field? As in does it pick up eyes like a lamp?

Yeah you can put it on full flood and scan with it and eyes reflect back just like a torch, you wouldnt have the search area you would have with the torch but it is still fairly good, we were just scanning with the led lenser x7r and when i seen eyes i just flicked on the designator looked through the scope then bang no messing. i have a kaps 8 x 56 with illuminated dot and the designator worked perfect with it.
I acutally bought the wrong one i ment to buy the more powerfull one it is only about 20 quid dearer. but im more than happy with the one i got.

Sounds good, i had been considering an nd3 last year but decided against it because if the bad reviews

I was out with lads that had both and the nd3 is dirt the nd5 was a better job but your talking over 550 quid that would be more expensive than some lads scope and gun and the mounting bracket was still ****e.
Rabbit assassin recomended this one so i took a chance and i wasnt disapointed.

tempted, can you switch it constant on or is it just the pressure switch? can the battery be recharged or are they just disposable, thanks.

You can do both they give you a push button end cap for leaving it on constant or the pressure switch with cap for just flicking it on, the battery is a cr123A ,the one they give you is disposable but you can buy 2 and a charger for a 10 -20 euro on ebay

From the image the light looks diffused and not a beam. This is a LASER, correct and not just a bright light, correct?

What exactly are you looking to do with it?

I tried out a 1/2 Watt Wicked LASER not too long ago and it was amazing. At hundreds of yards, you could easily see the dot and the line. It was so bright, you could use it as a flashlight.

Actually, it is so bright that: (1) I was concerned about going blind if it were to bounce off an object and (2) the dot is easily visible at 100ya during the day.

I can only imagine what the 1.0 Watt ($300) laser could do.

Just out of curiosity do you have the optimus nd30 or the nd50? What range is it useable to roughly? Do you think it could be mounted using a led lensor p7 mount that I have? Sorry for all the questions just seriously thinking of getting one...

Only answering this as LB1981 is in Oz at the moment. He originally had the n30 the changed for the n50 as it was more powerful. In terms of range that depends on your scope but i can clearly make out objects over 400 yards away. It comes with a couple of different mounts so it will fit any scope. Mine came with a double mount aswell which allowed me to attach a torch aswell- but it's that good I don't bother.

Only answering this as LB1981 is in Oz at the moment. He originally had the n30 the changed for the n50 as it was more powerful. Could anyone compare light output or say a led lenser to one of these lamps?

I have the little rechargeable lenser with the single head.. 220 lumens..

Can spot eyes.. But It would by no means illuminate something comfortably over 200 yards..

we were out lamping the other night and myself and moby30 were looking at deer eating leaves from a tree at 300 yards through the scope crystal clear with the laser, we got the 50mm versons

Did you check it for temperature sensitivity yet?
The nd3 wouldn't work below 10 degrees c.
Have you tried it in rain at all? Can you still identify your target then?
I'm not trying to run the product down, I was very impressed with moby's one when I saw it. I'm just tryin to see if it has any of the same problems as the nd3, because I'm thinking about buying one

It defo works under 10 degrees Declan,as for the rain the only time i had it out it was that misty rain with a strong wind we were caught out in and i couldnt see through my scope with the rain blowing on to my lens but the laser seemed fine, i have got some thin neoprean sheets from work and i am going the make some covers for it just as a precaution.
Theses are imitation ones Declan but they have a better mounting system than the ones x2 the price.
The beam can be opened up and it can be used for scanning the fields so that is the next plan to move away from the led lensers and have one of these on the scope and one in the hand as they dont spook the fox, go for the 50mm version bigger scanning area.

it is 2 totally different items , the m7r and x7r are torches and do what they are ment to do, the designator is totally different as it is a laser, the laser dosnt spook the fox

I do hear good and bad reports about them.some claim 150 yards with the ND50? Some claim they are useless and some say they are the last word. Is it down to your optics? I would buy one soon if they are good. Also James Mc Bride has them and he claims 150yards be about the cut of them. I don't know what they are like as I never seen one in action. Does the fox look at the light? Would you see one clearly at 300 yards if the conditions was right or only eyes? Only eyes is out the window for me. I need to see him clearly.

Are you asking about the Laser Genetics ones or the Optimus ones?

It really couldn't be any clearer lads.
The laser genetics nd3 isn't worth a bollix
The other laser genetics are good but WAY over priced.
The Optimus laser n5 is half the price and more powerful. I can clearly make out like its daytime an animal 3/4/5 hundred plus yards. You are only limited by your scope.

Well I took a few now at 250-350 yard ranges with a buds 243.. she has a S+B klassik 3-12x50 iirc.. at 350 yards you can see the legs and ears without a bother.. they really are a serious piece of kit.. I called one in with the .22 while it looked at the beam.. came to within 25 yards are so.. I was shocked.. just dont use the recharge batterys.. pure shiote.. go away and buy a shot of cr123's..

also the ones in mcbrides are the laser genetics.. not meant to be great..

funny enough and it usually applys to shooting but this time round "you dont get what you pay for.. "

at night time we put the laser onto the tinnest point and shone it in a friends house window :pac::pac:

as the crow flys on google maps its just under 2 and a half km's :pac::pac:

Really are a serious piece of kit..

I'm gonna get a pse stock made up for the tikka with a pic rail on the side to mount it..

I'm on about the one that cost 450euro and has a green beam of light. James mc bride has them. I remember seeing a wild boar on the box but can't recall the name of it. He claimed 150 yards at most and i'm not saying he's right or wrong

I got mine delivered to the door for 180 euros including all the mounts etc. They seem to have a good returns policy alsojust in case. I think they might have gone up slightly though since then.
