'Personal tragedy' is often used instead of 'death by suicide' when reporting these incidents.

I live in Clare and unfortunately, quite a few people have taken their own lives at the Cliffs of Moher. The local media almost always refer to these deaths as 'personal tragedies'.

I agree, there's no need to bring others into it. It could be remarked as been the same as throwing a brick onto a live motorway, awful way to go but to take an innocent person away from there family in the process I don't think is fair at all or to emotically scar someone for the rest of there life either.

Maybe if either of ye understood the mindset of suicide you might not be so quick to judge.

AS for comparing a person (or remarking) to a brick.. what a pathetic mindset you have..

Brick.. thuggish behavior.. intent on doing harm to others for the enjoyment of another..

Please don't lump my comments alongside those who compared someone taking their own life with those who throw bricks from overpasses.
I never made such a suggestion and do not agree with the analogy.

Nowhere in my post did I judge anyone. All I did was state facts.
It is impossible for anyone to understand the 'mindset' of anyone else regardless of their mental health. Fit or otherwise.

We cannot speculate about the mental health of the person who jumped off that bridge. Many would say its nobody's business but theirs but this is where I disagree. Had they taken their own life in a manner that didn't interfere with the lives of other (unknown) people, I would say its no ones business. It happens everyday of the week in this country.

But the sad situation last night involved many others. I have no doubt that the jumper wasn't intent on destroying the lives of others, and nowhere in my post do I condemn him / her. But the fact remains that thats exactly what could have happened.

And therefore, as I said in my post, my thoughts are with the driver of the truck last night.
I reckon his mindset is screwed up right now, and quite possibly will be for a long time to come.

I think he deserves all the support he can get right now.

Suicides are rarely reported as the media appear to have an agreement not to report them.

Polish chap jumped off the top of my apartment building a couple of years back, not high enough and he finally died in the ambulance on the way to hospital. Horrible way to go.

Not a word in the press/tv.

Not too familiar with that passover but do most of the bridges not have barriers to prevent incidents like this? Must have been a suicide attempt alright as i cant see how else someone would fall from a bridge.

Hope everyone is ok and i can't imagine how traumatised the truck driver is!!

Don't see why they have to involve other people. Often think of jumpers on train tracks and the poor drivers.

Do what you wanna do but don't be ruining other peoples lives in the process. And there would be some thought behind it.

Correct,I have a friend who drives a train and it happens very often,at the moment there are a few drivers out on stress etc as a result of hitting someone at high speed,not a nice experience.

Why is that, more people de through suicide than are killed on the roads, an issue needs to be made of it. We need to talk about it or it will always be taboo.

There's also a legal aspect to it. Not least that it's making a determination of the cause of death before the coroner gets there, if the person survives, that's a potential defamation suit in the making.

Incredible that the woman is still alive after this incident.

One of my regular customers cracked up in front of me a few weeks back. Poor bastard was shaking. A young one went under his train from a bridge, and was killed.

He had no chance to stop and is now getting help. It must be a terrible thing and some of the comments on this thread are shamefull.

I know its after hours but maybe a few more bans should be handed out for smartarses.

The amount of idiotic posts on this thread is shocking. The M50 moves freely these days, in the evenings at least. If you dont think a truck swerving doing nearly 100 kmph can do serious damage then you need your hedz examined.

There are footbridges near the blanch exit but these are fully caged over.

The flyover bridges have barriers that would be over waist high.

My girlfriend is a newsreader. It is policy not to report on suicides. The thinking is that they will encourage other suicides if they do. I don't know if that's right or wrong and many in the media are unsure too, but that is the policy.

The actual junction where you enter/exit the M50 is one of those massive ones now where the roads go over and under each other. Not sure there's anywhere you could actually jump/fall from there. Most of the walls are very high.
The road between Blanchardstown and Castleknock crosses the M50 and the bridge there just has sort of between waist/chest high railings. Unless someone was drunk or messing around they're still not really ones you'd fall over accidentally.
