like would i give a ****. when i got my gtx 680 delivered to work i opened and it right there to check if its okay after delivery. people asked me wtf it is and when i said its a computer part worth 550eu they looked at me like i am some sort of lepricon high on weed.
It felt awesome for me thought :D

I know a guy who got one of these delivered to his workplace. Needless to say he said he got some funny looks, but IIRC it wasnt the first such package so they were all used to him being a weirdo.

Maybe a bit far but still its still embarrassing to have that box on my desk at work like.

Stick a binder or something over it, or shove it in your bag like.

Very disappointed with specialtech. I ordered at the weekend and it still hasn't shipped. Excuses from being swamped with my orders to being out of stock.

Yikes, that's bad. Maybe it got the same treatment as the old amazon rolling box. Well, maybe with the sledgehammer to the side as well.

Most courier handling is terrible. Had a friend who worked with DHL and I heard nightmare stories like dropping TVs, just chucking boxes into vans even if it's labelled fragile...

It'll never stop though, companies just have to have their boxes very well packed for long distance haulage.

I'm updating the guides that I've written. Anyone want anything added?

How about one about all the different wire connectors and ports? PCI, PCIe, SATA, SATA III, eSATA... very confusing for a nooblet like me! :(

I was thinking more on the ones I've already done. Partyatmygaff's guide sort of covers these somewhat, although I suppose it could be expanded to cover a bit more - mainly thinking of the AGP slot in the picture as that's not been in systems for a while. :pac: I think he said he was coming back to add more to it. Maybe you should send him a PM to put the pressure on. Actually, I might add a bit about SATA speeds in the SSD guide as it's fairly relevant.

Yeah, for instance I bought a caviar blue today. Seller gave me a free SATA II cable. Is that the max transfer amount a HDD can use or should I get a SATA III cable? Gonna need to hunt one down anyway; my SSD came with no cables.

As far as I know, the cable will make no difference in speeds. There's just a few new things added in the standards here like the locking mechanisms. What you need is a motherboard (or a storage card) which will allow you to use SATA 6Gbps (AKA SATA III). The HDD/SSD has to be SATA 6Gbps too.

For the hard drive, it will make very little difference running at SATA II speeds as they just aren't fast enough to use those speeds.

The cable I was given doesnt seem to have a lock... does that make it a SATA I cable?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

No, I have a load of SATA II cables like that. As I said though, the cable itself is irrelevant.

Lads looking to buy 2x 2TB WD greens for my server (or other 'green'/low speed drive). Its a hp proliant -I have the bay full and i am gonna squeeze another 2 drives in the 5.25 bay with the nexus doubletwin. I was gonna wait til the prices went down but it looks like thats never gonna happen and I had to move my server from its seriously awkward spot so i may leave it out for a week til i get the new drives and put it back.

Can someone tell me if these amazon drives are the same as the hardwareversand ones?

    Many Thanks :)
