Many thanks for the replies lads, I'm with Wicklow broadbandand it seems the Issue is with their antenna-even though I have the ports forwarded on the router, windows firewall rules configured etc. the antenna is blocking the ports.

They're going to set up a PPPoE bridge between it and the router. hopefully then the router will be where ports are opened/closed..

All this to test a bloody DVR..precious Borderlands 2 time wasted as well..:)

Changed to avast because MSE wasn't installing updates for me at all last week. After a few days of not using my pc I tried to turn it on there a few minutes ago and kept getting the black limbo screen (nothing else but mouse, which you can move..) so went into safemode and uninstalled avast as it was the last thing I had changed and sure enough I was able to boot in fine.

I'm having more troubles than windows is worth to me these days. I don't play games anymore at all, and prores would be handy for video editing so I'm seriously thinking about going hackintosh with this.. AFAIK all my components are compatible, 3930k and 580...
Could pick up another small SSD and install onto that. Worst case scenario I lose the 30 quid I'd have to spend on buying lion

Why not Linux, Ubuntu 12.12 has a very OS X feel to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

Have a look at Ubuntu or Mint or something before you go to OSX. I've been using it quite a bit in labs recently, and I like it so much that when I get the time I'll be dual booting it with Win7.

I'm mainly using this pc for video editing, and so I'm really limited to either windows or osx. I have a burning love for all things linux, but until the day where I don't have to dual boot, I'll have to stay away. Wine isn't an option either because although I would be able to some or most of the programs I need, I wouldn't have the same integration between them...

I'll miss sony vegas though... it's the only NLE where cropping video wasn't a complete afterthought (read: premiere adding crop marks is literally just an image overlaying the top and bottom of a video)

The title is misleading. He wasn't killed while taking apart his computer, he was killed while fiddling with his PSU, which is an entirely different ball game. Playing with the only component in a desktop that stands a very real chance of killing you isn't a great idea, unless you're paranoid about electrical safety.

    Paperclip hotwiring a psu maybe?

    Really sad..

CRTs have been known to kill as well. They can store electrical power for a long time.

Not a nice way to go. Could have been a faulty PSU so even if he was following standard procedure, it might have caught him by surprise.

Do you have it plugged in the right jacks? The only way you'd get Windows to affect it would be if you had it plugged into the motherboard's onboard ports.

Stupid question, I know, sorry. Just wasn't anything else I could think of. You can enable 5.1 in CCL, but that won't effect music. You need to also enable CMSS-3D if that's what you're looking for, or DTS/DDL if your speakers can decode either of those.

Cheers Serephucus for the help anyway

Decided to attempt a serious budget build. An entire Sandy Bridge PC for 250 euro. Ordered the parts. Going to assemble and benchmark next week hopefully.

    Indie Royale, the Fall Bundle.

Don't really play many games but that "To The Moon" is brilliant apparently.

My mobo only has one chassis fan header, but I have two, one in one out. How can I use both?

Whats gonna happen if I just have on running now? Say, the CPU one, and the front fan, but not the second fan sucking air out? I have vents and that, but will it still get dangerously hot without the second fan sucking? Is there any way I can get a splitter to act properly instead of having them go full speed all the time? Why the hell would a mobo maker put only one chassic fan connection on...

Why not get yourself a fan controller.

You stick a panel in the front of the case, then hook up the fans to that, and give it power, then it allows you to manually set the speed. A simple one with 3/4 control knobs will do you fine.

Thanks Solitaire who re-edited some of the guides. I made a few changes in all of them but the biggest changes were to the SSD one.
