My local was out of Fullers Organic Honeydew last night so picked up 6 bottles of the Franziskaner Weissbier.
Good jaysus it was rough, only got halfway through the 2nd bottle and that was me done.

I think it's decent enough though I prefer their dunkel.

I'd also go for Schöfferhofer in Aldi over Franziskaner in Lidl.

It honestly reminded me of something I had to rinse my mouth with in hospital when I was a kid.

Had a pint of O'Haras IPA in the Waterloo this evening. Had only had it from a bottle previously.
Really enjoyed it on draught. Delighted to see it there along with the red as well.

It's not specifically either of those two beers I'd been excited about, althout I do like them a lot, but the breweries other beers. I'd love to be able to get a few bottles of stuff like Black Butte Porter, Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Obsidian Stout, Red Chair or even the special brews like The Abyss, Black Butte Aniversery of The Dissident by Deschutes. I drank in their pub in Portland and their brewery in Bend a few years ago and was totally blown away.
Ranger is just a nice hot day beer and a quite like fat tire too so would be nice to get some new belgium beers.

If you are more into the malty type of pale ales try Mirror Pond by Deschutes, lovely biscuity malts and not super hoppy, and to 5% it's fairly sessionable.
Ive had the Mirror Pond (came off the same shelf), rated it the same as the other two. Black Butte porter and Obsidian Stout on the other hand, are right up there with the best beers Ive had. Amazing, particularly the porter.

I had Fat Tire on draught a few weeks ago in one of the craft bars here, lovely stuff. The other New Belgium they have in the supermarket is 1554 Enlightened Black Ale, ill pick up a bottle on monday.

In case you are interested the importer is Bell Cellar in Hamilton. Contact info is here:

Have a look through their US selection it will blow your mind

Black Butte is probably my favourite beer ever, it was everywhere in Portland too, even the ****ty dive bars had it on tap, I totally fell in love with it. Been craving it ever since!

That selection is sick, I hate you.

You sure you actually like beer?

Also, did you intend drinking 3 litres of hefe in one sitting?

No, I hate beer. I just drink it while sticking pins in my eyes and subjecting my ears to the worst music I can find

And the 6 bottles were on offer if you must know.

I brought back a taster pack of theirs, which had a Weissbier, a clear Weissbier and a dunkle, from Munich over the summer and thought that they were too sweet for my liking. I finished them alright but wouldn't buy them again. But saying that, a friend of mine had the dunkle a couple of weeks ago when I was out with him and he really enjoyed it.

Speaking of Weissbiers, the Erdinger Oktoberfest is lonely stuff, very drinkable with a sharpness to it that sort of cancels out some of the usual sweetness of a Weissbier.

    Castello Birra Bionda (Premium Lager)
A terrible Italian beer. Avoid at all costs.

Birra Mastro Chiara another terrible beer. Almost a sweet water.

Was talking to Ken in Drinkstore about the recent glut of Italian "Craft" Beers on the market. Seemingly there seems to be a bit of a craft beer explosion happening in Italy at the moment.
The lack of good reviews, and quite frankly ridiculous costs, has put me off trying any.

Use ratebeer folks, thats what its for

A quick scan of the barcode with the app and its clear neither of these are craft beers

I'm back in Ireland in three days. Already have a list of beers to taste and enjoy, but all recommendations are welcome! Be prepared for my overly excited posts in the next few days on beers you guys probably have every week! :)

Those Goose Island beers tend to be a bit pricey for what they are.
The one I keep repeat buying is Sofie - if you like saisons, then I'd recommend it.
I also really liked Juliet - essentially an American Lambic in style.

They are all good but most of them don't warrant a repeat buy from me apart from the two I mentioned above. Having said that, I can buy Belgian Lambic and saison of similar quality much cheaper.

Sofie is a fantastic beer, one of their best. I liked too Matilda, but not quite as much.

Their IPA is a fantastic beer and quite like Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale in that it's a bit of a standard bearer of the style, and it's one that I never get bored with.

But the best beer I've tried by them is their Bourbon County Vanilla Stout. Just spectacular, and one of the best beers I've ever had.

Have to strongly disagree about Hobgoblin, I think it's great stuff.

Also, Franziskaaner is a great wheat beer for the price. It's not the best one, but for the money, it's damn good.

Picked up two bottles of Hilden's last night. Yes, Hilden's from Lisburn. A report will be following up; it's a while since they bottled beer and had it on sale here.

Picke up a few bottles of Youngs double chocolate stout tonight. This time last year I'd have laughed at the idea of drinking stout, never liked any that I had tried before. Can't get enough of it lately.

Brewdog Libertine BIPA (draft) - Lovely beer. Packing a big hit of hops, which dominate over any dark roasty flavours that might be there, but still very enjoyable. Hides its 7% ABV very well.
Redwillow Soulless BIPA (draft) - not as full-on with the hops as Libertine, and a bit more balanced by dark malts and a touch of sweetness. Very enjoyable all the same (I've yet to try a bad BIPA!)
De Molen Rasputin (draft) - I love this bottled, but somehow on draft it didn't quite scale the same heights for me. Still a good drink, but just didn't seem as smooth and full-bodied.
Hoppin' Frog barrell-aged BORIS the crusher - an oatmeal RIS, aged in bourbon barrels (I think). Very full-bodied and creamy, a fair degree of complexity and feels boozy too.

Also bought some De Molen Tsarina Esra, Bommen & Granaten, Spanning & Sensatie - all for the cellar.

Had a bottle of Chiron by Thornbridge the other night. Lovely beer, it reminded me of a more subtle take on Irish IPA, really hoppy but less bitter and sweet and less aggressive carbonation.

Love Thornbridge beers but they're just killer price wise.

    Few crackers for this weekend

New Belgium 1554 Enlightened Black Ale
Southern Tier Imperial Creme Brulee Stout
    MIkkeller Koppi Coffee IPA
    Maui Brewing Co Coconut Porter
    Thomas Hardys Ale
Yeastie Boys Red Rackham - a curious Hybrid of an American amber and a Belgian Ale

As I am now living 500 meters from the Staropramen brewery I have made it in every few days to try their beers in Order that they have on tap.

Staropramen, ležák a typical Czech lager tastes better in the brewery then in the local bars for some reason and a hint of grassy
Staropramen Nefiltrovaný is my favorite as mentioned before from other posts.
Staropramen Velvet is a Kilkenny like beer and its ok but 2 is enough in any one sitting.
Staropramen Cool Grep is just wrong wrong wrong. Beer with grape flavour.
Staropramen Cool Lemon is also wrong wrong wrong. Beer with lemon flavour added.

Staropramen Černý (Dark) is a nice beer especially when the cold is starting to kick in now so feels like a proper winter beer.

Staropramen Řizek : Its a mix of of the Cerny and the lezak and its really nice to be honest at 1st I was not sure especially when you see the bar man pour one beer in then moves to another tap and pours that in on top. Anyway a good mix of flavours and can see many of the locals seems to enjoy this alot.

Staropramen Granát : a redish lager which isn't great to be honest. Looks better then it tastes.

Taking a tour of the Franciscan Well brewery tonight and I'm told to expect a taste of some seasonal beers at the end of it. Really hoping that the tasting will include some of the stout that they have aging now that will be out in time for Christmas. Probably not gonna happen, but I can always dream!
