But you can't change somebodies sexual preference no matter now much anti-gay proponents want to believe you can. The reason it's banned is because it's not possible and the people who are attempting it are doing so because of their own anti-gay agenda.

Men who want to be women and vice versa can at least undergo treatments that bring them to towards this goal.

Lastly, the person who doesn't want to be sexually attracted to pre-pubescents can indeed do counselling so that they don't act on their desires which would cause harm to minors. Their desires can't be removed any more than straight or gay peoples' can. But theirs has the potential to harm.

And what of the many ex-gays claims to the contrary? They seem to be the fly in the ointment, and in many cases suffer awful abuse. The hetero community remain wary, and the homosexual community believe they are some kind of traitor. If the anecdotal evidence of gay people with regards to feeling harmed by counselling is being used, then why is the anecdotal evidence of a person who is ex-gay not?
Can you give us any evidence that the ex-gay ministries type "therapies" (i.e., the ex-gay "Hallelujah, I cast the gay demon out of you" therapies) actually work?

If you believe you can turn someone from gay to straight, do you also believe that you can turn someone from straight to gay?

Many of these so-called ex-gays are actually bisexual people who are exploiting their straight side.

As a sacred witch and enchanter of the church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, I'm able to turn straight people gay. Have we any volounteers?

Hmmmm, there's an idea: Ex-Straight Ministries.

Nah, has to be some wishy-washy title that tries to make the whole endevous less sinister but fails miserable. Something like "Fortitude of Will Contemporary"

Well I've watched the Spongebob movie about a dozen times at this stage and I still don't feel like putting my willy in another man's bottom, so I reckon I'm safe from your jiggery-pokery.

It was my understanding that only Monica Belucci and Johnny Depp were posessed of such powers?

Not at all. I have absolutely no idea if whatever methods work. My point is not that they are banning therapies. My point is that they are banning any attempt. Though tbh, on further reading of the bill, they do say they are leaving the door open if there is scientifically backed research to back up a therapists claim, so the therapists are free to present their research. That seems fair enough on face value. However, I'm wary of the fact that if a person is religious, they don't seem to count really in terms of scientific research as its believed that there is a bias in religious believers for their alleged conversion to be true. Unfortunately, there does seem to have been quite a bit of self deception, and lies in terms of 'conversions', so like I said earlier, there's a bit of reaping what has been sown, boy who cried wolf going on. Its one of the frustrating things about religion (Actually, people in general. But I wish Christians especially had the cop on to see its not Christian)
If you believe you can turn someone from gay to straight, do you also believe that you can turn someone from straight to gay?

I don't actually know. I do know of people who claim that they used to be gay, but are not anymore. I also know 1 gay guy that I met in Thailand, who claims he was straight until he decided to 'give it a go' in relation to homosexuality, and he's never looked back. From my experience, there seems to be some intrinsic side to sexuality, but at the same time sexuality seems like it can also be very malleable.
Many of these so-called ex-gays are actually bisexual people who are exploiting their straight side.

If you say so. I know one exgay man who is happily married with children, and doesn't seem repressed. He had a very hard time being accepted in the church he attended (By accepted, I mean there was always that sense of 'is he Really hetero now?' , but he ended up married to the pastors sister. Again though, you can only go on what the person testifies really in these incidents, and due to the fact that many then come out years later and say that they simply repressed their desires, it, quite fairly, makes people suspicious.

No guys, you see only those who truly accept FSM as their saviour can change, you must accept his noodly appendage within you. What we do is tell you that you must pray for change, and feed you lots of negative reinforcement about being straight. If it fails? Well, the onus is on you, you obviously didn't pray hard enough, didn't really want to change and berate you for it. One day, when same sex marriage is legal, we'll arrange a sham marriage for you and your lucky partner who we've also worn down into leading a "homosexual lifestyle", just like our christian counterparts did for Marcus and Michelle Bachmann :)

We have already learned to our cost that Jimi doesn't 'do' studies - he prefers to base all of his assumptions about the human race on his personal observations.

So no links, or what they were about then? I've so many on ignore at this stage that I likely didn't see what you're talking about. Feel free to tell me the context and post the links you refer to though.

If you have a forum moderator on ignore, that's your own business.
You were asked repeatedly to read them so no, I'm not going to do the hard work again so you can blithely talk about "personal observations" again

Who you have on ignore is your problem. If information has been provided, it's up to you to read it not up to anyone else to spoonfeed you.

Of course, sticking people on ignore seems about right for you Jimi; ignore all the opinions you don't like until all you see is agreeable people and then you'll never have to consider changing your mind about anything.

Jimi, your sig says "Knowledge puffs up, but Love builds up". Havne't seen much evidence of either in this thread.

Any more stroppy personal comments from you will gain you one of the forum's highly-regarded red cards.

And that's your prerogative. No issue my side anyway.

You claim to have read the legislation. Which of the organisations and studies mentioned are flawed? Which ones do you disagree with? Which studies are you presenting that argue to the contrary?

I'm sure I'm one of the ones you have on ignore for having the sheer cheek to inquire as to why a question you couldn't answer was "stupid", but given your religion's fondness for parables, I will continue, as it draws suitable parallels with the wider community:
    • "Here's the scientific evidence"
    • "It's wrong"
    • "Why? Where's the alternatives?"
    • [Sticks fingers in ears]

Not so actually. Its more about manners or unvalued input. I'm on an atheist forum afterall, alone in my opinion. Hardly seeking people to agree with me.

Manners is reading the links provided which answer your queries instead of repeatedly posting I dont know BUT and insulting everyone

I think you're alone in your opinion pretty much anywhere except your Christian forum.
