Nah, medion produce a lot of muck IMO and its basically on par with an atom with OTT RAM.

Most of the crop are 2600 based, its a pity the 2800 isnt more prevalent :/

kinda in the market for a laptop for college. I know a guy selling a XPS 17 (L702x). 17" is a bit big and heavy to be hauling around but for €650 its hard to pass up. service tag: 11G7YP1

    specs:

    i7-2630QM 2.00GHz
    6GB Memory
    500GB HDD
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M
    17" 1600*900
9cell battery (well used though, 2hours usable time)
    no nvidia optimus though.

I'm fairly sure its got space for a second HDD, so I'd definitely be throwing in an SSD.

good deal? is ~3.8kg too much to be hauling around?

would it play BF3 online on medium settings?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

Two hours battery time? My GF has an XPS 17 as well (about six months old) and it gets seven hours browsing.

Not sure on BF3. I know it'll run Crysis on medium at a resonable framerate (40-50 IIRC) but I never tried it with BF3.

I think its 2 hours while gaming. actually I could be completely wrong. I'll find out tomorrow.

is it light enough to carry around for college etc?

does it come with the second hdd caddy installed already, or would I need to buy one to fit my SSD?

    overall thoughts?

    what did she pay?

    is she hot? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

It's not the lightest of laptops, especially considering the 9-cell battery, but it's fine if it's in a rucksack or something, yeah.

Nah, comes with the caddy. All you'll need is a HDD (and an SSD really helps it. Threw my old 32GB Onyx in there, and the difference from the 5400RPM ****e was unreal.)

Excellent laptop. The audio system in particular is absolutely without peer. If you haven't heard it already, you'll be amazed. (I was, and you know me when it comes to stuff like this)

€2,100-ish, I think? But that's with 3-year warranty, accidental damage, etc. and a printer and a few other bits and pieces.

    I certainly think so. ;)

this still has 180 days next business day warranty.

    think I'll take it.

I was hoping 1080p had become more mainstream on laptops :(

Dell is wonderful though in that it's extremely easy to find parts on eBay for cheap. You could very easily pick up an RGB-backed IPS.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,979 ✭✭✭Tea_Bag

    seriously, for the 17 (L702x)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,979 ✭✭✭Tea_Bag

that would be epic. I imagine a lot lower power than LCD too.

hmm to save for car or get this. I'm not sure if he'd take 650 either. aarg.

I've got the L702x too and it's great, love it. I have the GT 555M and it can run BF3 no problems. I haven't done any testing with it really but it should be able to get around 60 fps on medium settings, maybe a little lower, but easily playable.

Like Serephucus said the speakers are amazing, you definitely need those 17"'s of real estate on a laptop I couldn't go back to a silly little flimsy 15" laptop, they feel like toys now :P
I can also confirm what Serep said, that it comes with the second HDD caddy, although the second one only came with 2 screws to hold it down, which was strange but will be fine if it's taking an SSD of course :)

When I got mine it also had the crappy 900p panel so I bought the AUO B156HW01 V5 which is 1080p, matte high quality panel. Cost me €150 including import taxes from http://www.otoptek.com/.
My source of all information for this laptop is the Dell XPS section on notebookreview it will provide a few nights/weeks of light reading, here is a direct link to the replacing the screen thread. http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/544174-official-swapping-xps-17-l701x-screen-thread.html

I don't mind the weight of the laptop, it is noticeably heavier than the standard 15" but for what you get in it I think it's worth it :pac:
The one issue I have with the laptop is it has no Context Menu key which I use all the time, so I have to press Shift + F10 now instead but for most people including Serep that wasn't a problem.

For the way I work in college a 17" laptop is 4" too big. I have my desktop at home for power use then I drive in to college and use the powerful desktops available to Computer Science students. My 15" acer laptop (with 2 hours crapy battery) that I carry would be used for light internet use or if all the desktops are used up.

If I had that kind of money I would go for this ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A-DB51 with 6 hours decent battery life. You can leave the charger at home and just have a light Ultrabook then that's the dream I think (Again for the way I work). Couldnt be arsed with gaming laptops - huge things they are.

im only paying €650. for that i can get a mediocre 15" that isnt going to do anything above low level gaming. its not that i need to game, its just nice to know i have the option. id love one of those zenbooks, but theyre far out of my price range.

So my parts arrived today! Moments before I left for work. =/

Anyways, I got it all built and everything is working, delighted.

Interesting point. I went for the Amazon 550W. I got an Amazon 550W box with an Amazon 650W inside???

Hey lads, anybody spot any bargains on netbooks? Helped the gf buy something but screwed up by believing the specs Argos listed so looking to make it up by getting her something decent. Only problem is she started college today so need to get sonething by the end of the week.

Just bought a Lenovo X131e for €300 (including 10% discount with code CJIRL1630SEP)

On the left here - http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/ieweb/LenovoPortal/en_IE/catalog.workflow:category.details?current-catalog-id=FD6DB49790C7411D933567FC361231FB&current-category-id=EE9DD9708474943DDEBA32F2ACC9CBE2

Core i3 2367m, 11.6" 1360x768 matt screen, 7+ hrs battery life. Bought the lowest model (same CPU) because I will be putting an SSD and 8GB of RAM in later.

It's the same as the X130e plus 720P webcam and 2 x USB 3.0 ports. Main complaint in reviews of the X130e seems to be that the trackpad is pretty woeful, but it has the standard Thinkpad trackpoint too.

I got to use one yesterday and was pretty impressed, but I have unusual taste in computers :p

Edit: they have an AMD model which is even cheaper, too.

Ended up ordering a NC110 from Pix last night as it was the best option with non-soldered RAM. But that is WAY better, wonder could we cancel now. God damn you're timing brian :pac:

i never understood all the hate to eircom.

i use eircom for the least 6, 7 years? only had problems few times and i always get sorted very very fast. for example few days ago my modem fried and i got new modem in my hands after 1 day. i was quite shocked.
all that time i only had once my speeds being **** around 18:00, but it got sorted fast. other then that, very very stable speeds. not the fastest in country, but in location i am, 10mbit stable connection is more then i could ever dream off.

customer service can be hit and miss, but almost any place have a few employes, which are proper lialias.

4Just got my power supply from komplett, and they did not include a power adapter, not much use without one is it? :p

I have one spare, but still they should include it

Ugh, eircom is another company with abysimal customer service. A few years ago, I could not find the WPA code (yes, I was a newb :P) and the guy got incredibly agitated with me :o

Needless to say, we were glad to switch to UPC. In fairness to eircom, apart from the DNS server occasionally going down, we never had issues with the actual connection much.

They probably do, but I think you just have bad luck. :pac:
Any time I've ordered stuff from there that requires a plug, they've thrown in a plug adapter because their stuff tends to be European sourced.

The only PSU that I know of that doesn't have the power cable is the Neo Eco!

Don't you mean WEP? Eircom had abysmal encryption on their routers.
I never had a big problem with them apart from their price.

yeah, your right, WEP! I remember getting a letter in the post about the whole hacking fiasco.

I'm with UPC myself but in the house back home the mother still has eircom.

Absolutely abysmal service, not only is it insanely overpriced for what's delivered, but I(along with dozens of people I've spoken to who also have eircom) have trouble with the service just dropping occasionally for time periods ranging from a few seconds to a few hours.

After numerous phone calls to their tech support(which usually were very unhelpful) I just gave up.

I know it's not a problem with the network at home because I've used various routers, and even had a mate who's a network admin take a look at it and not be able to find anything wrong.

Maybe it can be bad based on area?

    Bazzo:

I would say its more about area. Like I mentioned above I am using eircom for around 7 years and I only needed to cal tech support 3 times. Last time was last week, because my modem fried. In all faintess that was gen one netopia modem, 4 years old.
I got a very very helpful fella, who was spot on. When I called back to confirm modem being fried, I got not so much nice fella. It was hard to me understand him as he was talking very fast, plus I am foreigner, so it was hard for him to understand me too I guess. So he did acted like a wee bit of a sick. Though he did sorted my problem and I got my modem after 1 day.

It's a huge hit and miss with who you dealing with. I personally like to use boards.ie eircom fellas here. They are very helpful and very friendly.

As for connection it self. I never had rand drops in speed. It was always very very stable connection. I said that before: I must be one of those "unlucky" bastards, who get good service out of eircom :D, so I don't get a chance to bitch about them!

I replaced my junk amazon unit with a corsair PSU and the diffrences are amazing. The aduio no longer has a fussy sound to it and there is no whine coming from the PSU! :)

It might be a placebo affect but my computer seems to be a tad bit more responsive as well.

How long is the warranty with the super flower units anyway? I might RMA it back to HWVS ( they are probobly sick of me at this stage :pac:) and then sell it on adverts as a factory refurb/new unit depending on what they do with it.
