Give it another go! IMO its in the top 3 holy grail snes games with chrono trigger and a link to the past. Once you find your way around and finish it the replay value is huge trying to find all the items in the game

i agree its a gem of a game think the problem was i was playing it on a emulator and using the keyboard to control samus hurt the experience for me. I will give it another try sometime down the line , too much games need to be cleared first :pac:

chrono trigger another game i need to try out aswell

There are no Sega games better than Super Metroid. I feel confident enough in the game's greatness to make a bold comment such as this.

Actually, no there isn't. Some people may think that something like this is merely subjective, and most times they are right, but here it doesn't hold up. There is no game let alone a Sega game better than Super Metroid. What the hell are you doing not playing it!

I've never played super metroid OR chrono trigger. I've no idea why, because i LOVE me some SNES games, but i guess i just never got around to either of them. Until i played Zelda, i never was into RPG type games, i just played the marios, street fighters, zombies, konami shooters, etc.

I must put them both on the list to check out, but I've got so many games to play at the moment and so little gaming time that there's a serious backlog.

Which is better, Chrono trigger or Zelda LTTP, and why?

Super Metroid was probably my favourite Snes game of all.
I played it to completion, a wonderful time was had by all!

Can't say I have ventured back into the game, to finish it again, certainly the early sections feel quite old now, devoid of spectacle and all I really want to do is jump on a bit to when I have a better suit!

I had a chance recently to pick up the box and manual, to go with my unboxed copy.
Certainly, having the big box manual adds to the enjoyment of the game.
I must see if it's still available.

I played Super Metroid through for the first time last year and have to agree, there is no Megadrive game better than it. And that's coming from a huge Megadrive fan. It's an incredible game.

If we're comparing it to absolutely every other game made though...that's a bit of a leap, no?

No really it isn't. While I presonally prefer... oh maybe 2 games over Super Metroid I can honestly say that leaving personal preference out of the equation that super metroid is the greatest game ever made. Playing it for the first time is a wonderful experience, one of the greatest gaming experiences ever, however when you go back to it and start sequence breaking it a bit it's where you see just how well the game is made. The developers knew that gamers would find a way to break the game so they developed the game so that if you are able to sequence break then the game would still be playable and factored this into the game design.

Firstly Zelda is not an RPG so just because you enjoyed zelda doesn't mean you will enjoy an RPG. As for which is better it's hard to compare too very different games. All I can say is that LTTP is the best action adventure game on the SNES and Chrono Trigger is the best RPG on the SNES.

Was the big box version some sort of launch promotion/limited edition? I still have it tucked away in a drawer, the guide book is pretty nice.

It's certainly one of the best games on the Snes no doubt, maybe a top 10 or 20 game in general. It and the first Prime game are the best Metroid games imo.

No, I simply meant the difference in scale between a standard Snes release and the big format Super Metroid, with the big guide book.
My EU copy of Super Metroid has german subtitles, can't turn them off!
I don't remember them the first time around!

I suppose we can count ourselves luck that something as exceptional as Super Metroid was released over here at all.
It could have gone the way of Earthbound, released to big fanfare in the US and never made it's way over here, sold with equally idiosyncratic packaging and, well, delivered smugness to retrogaming owners here in these threads in abundance!

    I want it!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,364 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

All PAL copies of Super Metroid have German subtitles you can't turn off. It's because PAL sucks.

I'd kill for even an unboxed Earthbound :(

So what ARE people's fave games on the SNES?

I would have to say, mine are probably the usual suspects like Zelda LTTP, Super Mario World, Mario Allstars, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country, Earthworm Jim, and then possibly some stuff like Megaman X, Zombies ate my neighbors, and the head to head version of Tetris, which is loads of fun, and one of only about 4 video games i could ever get Missus Mackdaddi to play :D

Yoshi's island, Donkey Kong Country 2, Super Metroid, and Chrono Trigger, are some of the ones i haven't played properly through yet, but I intend to get to them and expect to like them a lot based on reviews I've read.

Super Metroid is probably next, once i give Ganon a good kicking in LTTP. That's coming along nicely at the moment, I've a few more maidens to rescue yet though. Feckin' liabilities the lot of them....

SMW, Allstars, Kart and Zelda as you've mentioned. Others that I would class as excellent would be Super Metroid, Super Tennis, F-Zero, SF2 Turbo (adored this), Super SF2 (actually slightly meh on this compared to Turbo imo), Alien 3, Super Punch Out and Yoshi's Island.

Plenty of other excellent games like ActRaiser, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Super Empire Strikes Back, Plok...but I wouldn't have played them near as much as the ones above.

    My personal fav is earthbound.

As for Donkey Kong Country and it's sequels, now that the pre-rendered graphics look really bad all that's left underneath are decent platformers but nothing special.

I don't know if it was in here or another thread recently, but i just don't see the point of playing ports of arcade games like SF2 Turbo on Snes nowadays, with the Arcade originals so easily available.

I played them endlessly back in the day when the arcade was a hike and a handful of 20p pieces away, but now it's just a case of loading one emulator over another, and even playing them on the original hardware a pad is not the same as using a stick on a cab.

Good call on Alien 3 by the way, and the Star wars games, although i don't think they've aged as gracefully as a lot of the best stuff, and in particular a lot of the first party Nintendo-developed stuff on the SNES like Zelda, the marios, f-zero etc. All that stuff is still fresh as a daisy.

DKC2 is supposed to be a very well constructed platformer. The search for the hidden items is meant to be excellent and really well designed. I read a piece by a noted game designer recently which cited it (and incidentally mega man x and yoshi's island) as excellent in terms of training the player on a learning curve.

It piqued my interest enough to make we want to take a look anyways...

I was the same up until last year myself. When I did finally begin playing it, I was on holidays from work and spent about three days straight just exploring the game. Couldn't put it down.

If you like sci fi you'll absolutely love it. The sense of aloneness on an alien planet is just amazing. I still think it's far better than the Prime games. (which I also really like, but they can't compare with Super Metroid. It's a work of art)

If it wasn't for the glass tunnel 'puzzle', I'd say Super Metroid might just be perfect. As is, its like 99.9% perfect.

Yes, if you have the means to play the arcade version of SF2 nowadays then sure that's a better way. But back when Turbo came out it was much handier and cheaper to play at home rather than make the trip into town.

Oh I read it as well it was by Dave Sirlin. He mentioned how the levels are all set up for speed runs and how the secrets worked. The levels are all set up for speed runs. However that just means when you figure that out nearly every obstacle can be beaten by moving as quickly as possible, it kind of ruins the game. Sure DKC2 is set up for people that like to play games at the highest level by doing speed runs but for people not at that level, i.e. the vast majority of people, the games level design is very pedestrian compared to the likes of SMW and Yoshi's Island. You have to remember that the article was written by someone that likes to play games at a very high level, he was a world champion of street fighter 2 at one point, a much higher level than the majority of people.

As for the secrets, some of them are hidden in very clever places, however he also totally forgets to mention the really badly placed ones like the ones for instance that make you jump through instant death thorns to reach them, totally changing the games rules to screw over the player. Take it from someone that has played the game without rose tinted spectacles, they're decent platformers underneath the prerendered plastic sheen but nothing special. Great music though.

Here's some real games journalists discussing it:

If it wasn't for the glass tunnel 'puzzle', I'd say Super Metroid might just be perfect. As is, its like 99.9% perfect.

You see back in the day Nintendo gave that one away in the TV advert! But yeah I got totally stuck there for about 3 weeks :)

Its tough! I'd say my favourite games are a link to the past, super metroid, chrono trigger, ff3(6), terranigma, yoshis island, donkey kong country 2, f-zero, super mario kart, sf2 turbo, sunset riders, turtles in time. Then theres classics like super castlevania 4, contra 3 and megaman x which I play from time to time. I'm playing through super mario rpg and illusion of gaia at the moment as I havent finished either, don't forget secret of mana and evermore too, both quality rpgs! Super Aleste is an amazing schmup aswell

Yeah that's the one. I've always liked his design and game theory work and (without getting into another argument entirely) i really liked the re-balancing job he did on Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo. I though it was a really excellent effort at something that should probably never have been done in the first place. No matter how he changed that game, or the level of quality of the re-balancing job, he was opening himself up for serious flack from legions of high level ST fans.

I don't think he was a world champion, but he was top 8 at EVO (the de-facto street fighter world championships) a few times though. He owned everyone with his remixed feilong in 2009, just to prove a point to all the haters who said his changes had messed the character up. Regardless, he is certainly a high level player, and I'm sure that that had a bearing on his take on Donkey Kong Country.

Hmmm, i'll bear it in mind. It's a game that's on my list of unplayed 16 bit highlights, so I'm gonna play it anyway, but I'll temper my expectations accordingly. Thanks for the vid by the way!:D

I got his name wrong it's David Sirlin! You should check out his SSFT2 tutorial videos, they thought me how to play an awful lot better.
